Sailing legend Carleton Mitchell dies at 96Published 07/17/07
Like Cal Ripken's 2,632 consecutive games or Wayne Gretzy's 92-goal season, sailor Carleton Mitchell's three consecutive Bermuda Cups stand as an unassailable sports record.

Mr. Mitchell, who lived and sailed in Annapolis for many years, died in Miami yesterday. He was 96.
"Carleton was a giant in our sport," said Gary Jobson, an Annapolis sailing journalist. "He was a longtime journalist and did quite a bit for sailing." Of the 46 Bermuda Cup races in the past century, only Mr. Mitchell walked away with three trophies, all consecutively in 1956, 1958 and 1960.
