Today's obituaries recognize: Eugene Broton, Evelyn Brown, Benjamin Hopping III, Sandra Kasey, Stephen Miller, Ben Moore Jr., Bryan Ross Jr., Gladys Smith and Nona Sohn Eugene Broton Dr. Eugene F. "Gene" Broton, 78, a resident of Burlington, Wash., and previously of Anne Arundel County, died Dec. 20 at Skagit Valley Hospital in Washington.
Dr. Broton was born May 21, 1929, in Chicago as the youngest son of the late Adam J. and Sophie G. Broton. He graduated from John Marshall Law School in Chicago. He served in the Army during World War II. He was a vice-president of McDonald's Corp. in the early 1960s, opening the company's first West Coast office. He had a thirst for knowledge and a keen interest in many things. He was especially proud of his successful treatment of an orbital tumor, after spending several weeks receiving proton beam radiation at Loma Linda University Medical Center in California. Dr. Broton was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and one sister. Survivors include his wife of 40 years, the former Barbara J. Woodfield of Galesville. Memorial services were held on Jan. 5 in Burlington. Arrangements were by Hulbush Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc. Brown, 84, of Severna Park died of cancer Jan. 7 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie after a five-week illness. Mrs. Brown was born Oct. 2, 1923, in Fishersville, Va., where she was reared and graduated from high school. She was a member of American Legion Post 40 Auxiliary. A homemaker, she enjoyed crocheting and spending time with her family. Survivors include her husband, Vernon J. Brown; one son, James E. Brown Sr. of Woodbine; one daughter, Patricia A. Unroe of Severna Park; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Benjamin Hopping III Benjamin Lape "Pete" Hopping III, 59, a resident of Annapolis for most of his life, died of diabetes Jan. 6 in Salisbury. Mr. Hopping was born Sept. 7, 1948, in Annapolis, and graduated from Annapolis High School in 1966. He earned an associate's degree in social work from Anne Arundel Community College in 1978. He worked as an emergency room technician at the former Anne Arundel General Hospital from age 16 until he was 18. He later worked for the state Juvenile Justice Department. He retired in 1985. Mr. Hopping served as a volunteer fireman since he was 16, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. He was also an EMT, paramedic, CPR instructor and Red Cross instructor for 25 years, and was one of the first EMTs to earn a near perfect score on the State Boards. He was a ham radio operator for over 20 years. Survivors include his former wife, Gail L. Walker Oursler; one daughter, Erica Young of Snow Hill; and one sister, Jan E. Hopping of Snow Hill. Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Sandra Kasey Sandra Denise "Sandy" Kasey, 47, a resident of Severn for four years and previously of Annapolis, died of a heart attack Jan. 3 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie. Ms. Kasey was born April 11, 1960, in Baltimore, and attended Anne Arundel County public schools. She worked as a secretary for the chief of police at the Annapolis Police Department for a year, and later as a sales associate at the former Woodward & Lothrop store from 1987 to 1994. She also worked at Fashion Bug on Crain Highway. Ms. Kasey became a model for Just Class Productions Modeling Agency. She volunteered at Van Boklen Elementary School from 2005 to 2007, and was an active member of Mount Calvary United Methodist Church. She was also a member of Broadneck United Methodist Church. Survivors include one son, Dennis Denzel Sutton III of Severn; four brothers, Ray and Raymond L. Kasey Jr. of Annapolis, and Jerome and George Kasey of Roanoke, Va.; and nine sisters, Tina Jones-Belon, Sheila Kasey, Yvette Jones, and Jannet Rodgers of Baltimore, Connie Evans of Marion, S.C., Aundra Kasey of Severn, DorRay Kasey of Pasadena, Sharon Harris of Annapolis, and Sharon Kasey of Roanoke, Va. Family and friends may visit from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Reese and Sons Mortuary, 821 West Street. A Christian wake and funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Mount Calvary United Methodist Church, 1236 Jones Station Road in Arnold. Interment will be in Broadneck Cemetery. Stephen Miller Stephen Charles "Steve" Miller, 62, of Riva, died of heart failure Jan. 5 at his home. Mr. Miller was born March 3, 1945, in Takoma Park to the late Ethel Byron and James Albert Miller Sr., and graduated from Northwestern High School in 1963. He worked in the automotive business in Maryland and the Washington, D.C., area for more than 40 years. Mr. Miller was an avid fisherman in both the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic. He was a member of a fishing group that held the record for the number of white marlins caught and released off Pirate's Cove in South Carolina. He also loved crabbing. Survivors include one son, Brian Miller of Riva; one daughter, Anissa Miller Hastings of Mount Airy; two brothers, James Albert Miller of Reston, Va., and Thomas Byron Miller of Davidsonville; one sister, Sylvia Miller Phipps of Las Vegas, Nev.; and one grandson. Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Beall Funeral Home, 6512 N.W. Crain Highway in Bowie. Interment is private. Ben Moore Jr. Retired Marine Lt. Col. Ben Adams Moore Jr., 82, of Annapolis, died of natural causes Jan. 4 in his sleep at home. Lt. Col. Moore was born July 5, 1925, in Grenada, Miss., as the oldest son of Lida McCracken and Ben A. Moore. While a senior in high school, he volunteered for duty as a Naval aviation cadet, attending Mississippi College and the University of Texas. In 1944 he received a congressional appointment to the Naval Academy. He played varsity football and met his wife of 50 years while at the academy. In 1948 he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps, and played football and ran track for the Quantico Marines. He graduated with the fifth basic class in 1949, and served in the Korean War and later in Vietnam. Lt. Col. Moore served in many instructor positions, including at the Army's Artillery School, at Quantico, and at the Naval Academy. He also served as backfield coach while at Quantico and the academy. After retiring from active duty, he worked with Westinghouse Learning Corp., and in 1975 became a professional land surveyor. After 13 years with McCrones, be began Moore's Coastal Consultants. Throughout his retirement, he trained many to become physically fit. He formed a group of Marine Corps marathoners in 1980 called Moore's Marines. He became an Annapolis city auxiliary policeman when he was 70, and worked part time at the Merritt Athletic Club as a physical trainer. Survivors include his wife, Betty Moore; two sons, Ben A. Moore III of Lake Front Terrace, Wash., and Douglas Lloyd Moore of Annapolis; one daughter, Diane Moore Fearon of Anchorage, Alaska; two sisters, Bonnie Jean Moore of Germantown, Tenn., and Heidi Moore Edwards of Mobile, Ala.; and six grandchildren. Memorial services will be held in the Naval Academy Chapel at a date to be announced. Bryan Ross Jr. Bryan F. Ross Jr., 26, a life-long resident of Denton in Caroline County, died Jan. 3 at Chester River Hospital of injuries suffered in an automobile accident. Mr. Ross was born Feb. 13, 1981, in Maryland to Mindy Bischoff of Denton and Bryan F. Ross Sr. of Annapolis, and attended North Caroline High School. He worked as a plumber's assistant for BPI Mechanical, and was a member of Plumbers Union Local 5. He was preceded in death by one brother, William "Billy" Ross; his grandparents, Russell Wimbish and Violet and Frank Ross; and his fiancee's daughter, Emma Jester. Survivors include his fiancee, Jennifer Edwards of Rock Hall; his fiancee's daughter, Olivia Jester; his step-parents, Deborah Ross of Annapolis and John Bischoff Sr. of Denton; one sister, Danielle Ross of Chestertown; and his grandmother, Eleanor P. Wimbish of Baltimore. Family and friends may visit from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Christian Fellowship Church, 377 W. Central Ave. in Davidsonville. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. Interment will be at a later date at Meadowridge Memorial Park in Elkridge. Memorial contributions may be made to the trust fund for Bryan F. Ross Jr. daughter, 611 Washington Ave., Chestertown, MD 21620, Attn: Danielle Ross. Gladys Smith Gladys Audrey Jacks Smith, 94, an resident of Owings and previously of Calvert County, died of natural causes Jan. 3 at National Caregiving Foundation after a 3-month illness. Mrs. Smith was born Oct. 21, 1913, in Calvert County, where she was educated. She worked as a domestic and cook at the Stallings-Williams Post 206 American Legion, Chesapeake Beach. An honorary member of the Women's Auxiliary of the American Legion, she was also a member of Carter's United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1960, Leitcher Smith; two sons, Robert L. Wilson and Theodore Holland; two brothers, Alvin and Winfield Jacks; and one sister, Georganna Jacks. Survivors include one daughter, Marydell Smith Jones; 23 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 30-great-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-great-grandchildren. Family and friends may visit at 9 a.m. tomorrow at Friendship United Methodist Church, 22 West Friendship Road. A Christian wake will begin at 10 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Mount Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery in Sunderland. Arrangements are by Sewell Funeral Home. Nona Sohn Nona Shaver Sohn, 83, of Severna Park, died of heart failure Jan. 4 at the University of Maryland Hospital. Mrs. Sohn was born Feb. 14, 1924, in Mathias, W.Va., and was raised in Catonsville and Linthicum. She attended the University of Maryland and Catholic University in Washington, D.C. A resident of Langley Park from 1943 to 1957, she then resided in Linthicum from 1957 to 1991 and subsequently moved to Severna Park. In June, 1973 she retired as a librarian with the National Security Agency after 26 years of service. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Kent Island Yacht Club, Bodkin Yacht Club, and Patapsco River Squadron and was active in the Lower Magothy Community Association. She was a charter member of Friendship Church of the Brethren in Linthicum and continued her membership and support through her life. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Edward Sohn. Survivors include one brother, William B. Shaver of Severna Park. Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway.
