Today's obituaries recognize: Calliope Braun, Calliope Braun, Calliope Braun, Calliope Braun, Calliope Braun, Calliope Braun, Calliope Braun, Emily Vecellio, Yolanda Walton, Katherine Weckesser and Evora Willis Calliope Braun Calliope Tsoulias Braun, 76, a resident of Edgewater since 1978, died of a pulmonary embolism Jan. 26 in her sleep in her home.
Mrs. Braun was born November 16, 1931, in Washington, D.C., to the late Dimitrios and Chrisanthe Tsoulias who were immigrants from Greece. Mrs. Braun became an accomplished entrepreneur as a teenager, working for and managing several small businesses. She was a central force in building a successful specialty construction company in the 1950s and '60s, designing, building, remodeling and equipping more than 600 restaurants. She also owned and managed several award-winning dining establishments. She was a champion for the disadvantaged and victims of abuse. Known for her dignity, compassion and respect for others, she cared deeply about equality and justice. Though she was shot at and her building destroyed as a result of civil rights rioting in 1968, she was adamant about rebuilding and maintaining her offices in that same neighborhood. She enjoyed traveling with her husband. She was a frequent patron of the Anne Arundel County Public Library, and was self-educated in many disciplines. She was a loving homemaker, creating art and other home furnishings, and was also a culinary artisan. She was an expert seamstress and mastered personal computing as well. She loved to dance and frequently won prizes for her Greek folk dancing. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Telemachos "Mike" John Morfessis. Survivors include her husband of 37 years, Bernhardt J. "Bernie" Braun Jr.; three sons, Peterjohn Morfessis of New Windsor, Dimitrios Morfessis of Rockville and Mark Braun of Bowie; two daughters, Ioanna and Chrisanthe Morfessis of Phoenix, Ariz.; one sister, Panagiota Babbis of Wheaton; and two grandchildren. A memorial service will be held immediately following the Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m. March 2 at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 2747 Riva Road. Arrangements are by Kalas Funeral Home. Frederick Carlson Frederick W. Carlson, 73, of Brandenton, Fla., and formerly of Annapolis, died Jan. 29 in his home. Mr. Carlson was born Dec. 27, 1934, in Annapolis, to the late Louis and Nettie Carlson, the previous owners of the Carlson Bakery on West St. He attended school in the Annapolis area. He was preceded in death by one brother, Jack Carlson of Rockville; and one sister, Betty Lou Nickelson of Bradenton. Survivors include one brother, Leonard Carlson of Edgewater; one sister, Virginia Mae Root of Edgewater; and his companion, Mary Bell of Bradenton, Fla. A private service will be held in the spring; interment will be in Cedar Bluff Cemetery in Annapolis. Rosemarie Hutteman Rosemarie Hutteman, 65, a resident of Annapolis for four years and previously of Davidsonville, died of natural causes Feb. 5 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Mrs. Hutteman was born Nov. 27, 1942, in Shamokin, Pa. She was a homemaker most of her life and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Davidsonville. She enjoyed gardening and baking. Survivors include her husband, Roy R. Hutteman; two daughters, Heather Tang of Crofton and Theresa Cowne of Warrenton, Va.; two brothers, Clement and Tom Labusky of Shamokin; one sister, Jean Sowers of Harrisburg, Pa.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A memorial Mass will be offered at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 101 Owensville Road in West River. Interment is private. Arrangements are by Kalas Funeral Home. Edna Klepper Edna Mae Fishpaw Klepper, 77, a resident of Eastport for over 50 years, died of natural causes Feb. 3 at Heritage Harbour Health Care Center in Annapolis after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Klepper was born Sept. 21, 1930, in Baltimore. She worked at her family's store, Fishpaws, in Severna Park and was also a homemaker. She enjoyed reading and loved her cats. Survivors include one daughter, Carol E. Southwick of Edgewater; and one granddaughter. Family and friends may join in the celebration of her life at 7 p.m. Monday at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater. Interment will be private. Born Jan. 21, 1937 in Butte, Mont., she graduated from Mountain Home High School in Idaho. She had been a manager at Fireside Beef House in Greenbelt, River Boat in Edgewater and Capital Center in Landover. She enjoyed cooking and baking. Survivors include her husband, Pasquale Luciani, whom she married Sept. 3, 1954; four daughters, Cathy Ann Reid of Walkersville, Cheryl Mikulka and Debbie Radzilowski, both of Crofton and Denise Meese of Germantown; two brothers, Wallace Farnham of Stateline, Nev., and Arne Farnham of Mountain Home; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Family and friends may visit at noon tomorrow with services at 2 p.m. at Beall Funeral Home. Interment will be in Lakemont Memorial Gardens, Davidsonville. Constance Popan Constance Debra Popan, 63, a 34-year resident of Odenton, died of sudden respiratory failure Feb. 4 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center. Mrs. Popan was born Sept. 21, 1944, in Pennsylvania. She formerly worked for B & B Beauty Supply, as a cosmetologist and with the Maryland Pennysaver. A homemaker, Mrs. Popan also enjoyed ceramics, bowling and spending time with nature. Survivors include her husband, Geza Popan; three sons, Charles Kacin Jr. and Mark David Sullivan of Odenton and Daniel Paul Sullivan of Lisbon, Ohio; two daughters, Debbie Deene of Hartly, Del., and Lois Kacin of Dundalk; one brother, Thomas Robert Blaskovich of Pittsburgh; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Family and friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Hardesty Funeral Home, 851 Annapolis Road in Gambrills. Funeral services will follow at 8 p.m. Interment is private. Reece, 85, of Annapolis in Tuesday's edition of The Capital. Survivors include two sons, Dr. Thomas Reece of San Anselmo, Calif., and Dr. Michael Reece of New Holland, Pa.; three stepsons, Gregory Carroll of White Stone, Va., Kevin Carroll of Stevensville and Steven Carroll of Odenton; two stepdaughters, Maureen Davis of Davidsonville and Donna Stratton of Annapolis; two grandsons; eight stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. Mary Sudduth Mary Lee Sudduth, 94, of Tarboro, N.C., died Feb. 6 at The Fountains at the Albemarle in Tarboro. Mrs. Sudduth was born April 7, 1913, in Wilson County, N.C. Survivors include one son, C. Scott Sudduth of Crofton; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow in Lakemont Memorial Park. Vecellio, 89, a resident of Annapolis for 25 years and formerly of Forestville, died of a heart ailment Feb. 5 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center. Mrs. Vecellio was born April 15, 1918, in Trenton, N.J. She served in the Navy during World War II as a WAVE from 1943 to 1945 in California. A Navy wife, she lived in Guam, Norfolk, Va., Hawaii and Puerto Rico, and had a child in almost every port in which her husband was stationed. She was a former longtime member of Mount Calvary Catholic Church in Forestville. She enjoyed canasta and bingo and adored her cats. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mark L. Vecellio; one son, Mark L. Vecellio Jr.; and one daughter, Madonna Jean Stoll. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann Malitz of Davidsonville and Ellen L. Jankowski of State College, Pa.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Family and friends may join in the celebration of her life from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 826 W. Central Ave. in Davidsonville. Yolanda Walton Yolanda Walton, 82, a 21-year resident of Bowie, died of cancer Feb. 4 at Villa Rosa Nursing Home in Mitchellville after a four-year illness. Mrs. Walton was born Nov. 28, 1925, in Washington, D.C. She had several government jobs including with the Customs Department and Department of Energy, and worked at Capital Radio Engineering Institute. She was a member of Southern Belles of Belair, the Red Hat Society, TOPS and several senior citizen organizations. She enjoyed line dancing and crossword puzzles. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Oscar Walton; and one brother, Michael Williams. Survivors include two sons, Robert Walton of Crofton and John Walton of Pasadena; a daughter, Deborah White of Bowie; two brothers, Robert Williams of Olney and Norman Williams of Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Beall Funeral Home, where services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham. Katherine Weckesser Katherine L. "Cass" Weckesser, 77, a resident of Glen Burnie for 25 years, died of Alzheimer's disease Feb. 5 at Crofton Convalescent Center after a long illness. Mrs. Weckesser was born April 18, 1930, in Annapolis to the late James and Ruth Talley. She was a homemaker, and was a former member of Moose Lodge 1456. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, camping, traveling and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She loved life. She was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, George F. Weckesser; and one grandson. Survivors include two sons, Ray and Edward Childress of Glen Burnie; three daughters, Kathy McIntire of Riva, Dawn "Dee" Belch of Glen Burnie and Pamela Traylor of Florida; three siblings; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Family and friends may visit from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Singleton Funeral and Cremation Services, 1 Second Ave. S.W. in Glen Burnie. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be in Glen Haven Memorial Park. Evora Willis Evora H. Willis, 82, a resident of Annapolis for 15 years and previously of Salisbury, died of natural causes Feb. 5 in her home. Mrs. Willis was born Jan. 20, 1926, in Cairo, Ill. She graduated from the Memphis School of Nursing. She was a registered nurse until she retired in 1979; she last worked at Crofton Convalescent Center. Mrs. Willis attended Riva Trace Baptist Church and was very active at the South County Senior Center, where she participated in line dancing, aerobics and computer classes. She loved playing cards, especially bridge. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank D. Willis, who died in August 1991. Survivors include one son, Frank E. Willis of Shady Side; one brother, Ray Harding of Anderson, Ind.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Family and friends may join in the celebration of her life at 3 p.m. tomorrow at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater. Interment is private.
