Today's obituaries recognize: Virginia Browning, Emma Dornon, Bernard Harris, Bernardine Hurley, William Jackson III, William Lindsey, Joseph Maloney, and Carl Robbins. Virginia Browning Virginia Lee Trott "Mrs. B" Browning, 84, of Deale died Feb. 28 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Browning was born Feb. 11, 1924, in Friendship to the late Nettie Estelle Taylor and Jesse Hugh Trott Sr. She attended the former Friendship School and Tracy's School and graduated from Southern High School. She worked as a clerk for Western Electric in Baltimore. Later, she worked as a teller at the former County Trust and Maryland National Bank in Owings, and in the Deale Shoppe. She served as President, Treasurer and Secretary of the Deale Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, as President of the county Firefighters Association Ladies Auxiliary, where she was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1992, and as the first president of the Deale Elks Lodge 2528, Ladies of the Elks. She was also active in the P.T.A.s and Parent-Teacher-Student-Associations at her children's schools. Primarily a homemaker, she enjoyed cooking and was known for her crab cakes and potato salad. She also enjoyed crafts, crossword puzzles, watching game shows, and spending time with family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman E. "Brownie" Browning Sr.; two brothers, Jesse Hugh "Gus" and Herbert C. Trott; and one sister, Esther Robinson. Survivors include her former husband, Thomas Paddy of Prince Frederick; four sons, Dale E. and John H. "Jack" Browning of Deale, Norman E. Browning Jr. of Federalsburg and Ronald H. Browning of Shady Side; three daughters, Mary Ellen Paddy and Robin Lynn Browning of Deale and Karen Ann George of Edgewater; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Rausch Funeral Home, 8325 Mt. Harmony Lane in Owings. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Deale Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Emma Dornon Emma Lee Dornon, 70, a life-long resident of Baltimore, died of cancer Feb. 29 in her home after a two-year illness. Mrs. Dornon was born Feb. 21, 1938, in Baltimore, to the late Helen Curry and Woodrow Burch. She enjoyed taking trips, dancing, Fan Fair, Dover Downs, and country music, but most of all she loved her friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Paul Dornon Jr.; and one brother, Edward Burch. Survivors include five sons, Ralph Dornon of Finksburg and Richard, Raymond, Roger and Ronald Dornon of Baltimore; four daughters, Linda Carr, Helen Caudill and Jo-Ann Kerger of Baltimore and Dorothy Caudill of Annapolis; one brother, John Burch of Baltimore; four sisters, Thelma Thornton, Gloria South, Maryann Gardiner and Penny Adcock of Baltimore; 23 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Family and friends may visit from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Gonce Funeral Service, 4001 Ritchie Highway in Brooklyn. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville. Bernard Harris Dr. Bernard Franklin "Bunny" Harris, 71, a resident of Skidmore for 20 years and previously of Baltimore, died Feb. 27 at Johns Hopkins Bayview Hospital after a month-long illness. Dr. Harris was born May 28, 1936, in Baltimore to the late Helen and Theodore Harris Sr., and was adopted by the late Aldred and Nancy Kess of Skidmore. He attended Skidmore Elementary School and graduated from the former Wiley H. Bates High School in 1954. He earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Maryland, and also held a doctorate degree. He formerly worked for Morgan State University, and as a building manager and with special education students. He was working for Annapolis Cleaning Company at the time of his death. He was a member of Asbury Broadneck United Methodist and Mount Moriah A.M.E. Churches. He enjoyed playing chess and pinochle and sponsoring organized charter bus trips to Atlantic City, N.J. He was preceded in death by his wife, Susan "Susie" McCullough Harris; and one son, Dale A. McCullough. Survivors include one daughter, Donna Robinson of Albany, N.Y.; two brothers, James Harris of Baltimore and Theodore Harris Jr. of Florida; one sister, Dorothy Rochelle Lawrence of Baltimore; one adopted sister, Chikeva Brown of Columbia; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Mount Moriah A.M.E. Church, 2204 Bay Ridge Ave. Interment is private. Arrangements are by Estep Brothers Funeral Service. Bernardine Hurley Bernardine Leshock Hurley, 77, of Deale died of natural causes Feb. 27 at Washington Hospital Center. Known as "Deany" and "Bea," Mrs. Hurley was born July 25, 1930, in Hazleton, Pa., to the late Mary Manyko and Joseph Leshock. She graduated from McAdoo High School. She worked with special needs children at Tayac Elementary School in Oxon Hill and later at Hillcrest Heights Special Center, from which she retired. She enjoyed many trips with her numerous friends from the Over 50 Club, South County Seniors Club, St. John's Seniors and the Hazleton Senior Center, and enjoyed playing the slot machines. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard J. Hurley. Survivors include three sons, Robert "Bob" Hurley of Edgewater and William "Bill" and Paul Hurley of Deale; two daughters, Kathy Konjusky of Lancaster, Pa., and Karen Klayman of Dunkirk; two sisters, Virgil Cochran of Indiana and Carol Leshock of Hazleton; and six grandchildren. Family and friends may join in the celebration of her life from 7 to 9 p.m. today and at noon tomorrow at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater. "Bill" Jackson III, 54, a resident of Churchton for 20 years and previously of Atlanta, died of complications from Lou Gehrig's disease March 1 in his home. Mr. Jackson was born April 8, 1953, in White Plains, N.Y., to Patricia Jackson of Riverside, Conn. He graduated from Stone Hill College in 1973 and with honors from the Culinary Institute of America in 1976. He worked for Great American Restaurants from 1988 until his death. Previously, he worked as a corporate executive chef and partner of Pano's and Paul's. He was a certified executive chef in the American Culinary Federation. He was a member of Chaine Des Rotisseurs, Chef Grillardin, and the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington, where he was Chef of the Year in 1995 and presented the first Education Foundation "Future of the Industry" Award in 2006. He was listed in Washingtonian Magazine as one of the "14 Hottest Chefs" in 1999. Besides cooking, he enjoyed sailing and windsurfing, hockey, fishing, gardening, banjo and air guitar. He pursued all his passions with intensity, and was an artist in everything he did. Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Peggy Jackson; two sons, Ryan Jackson of Shady Side and Zach Jackson of Churchton; one daughter, Lindsay Jackson of Churchton; one brother, Kirk Jackson of New York; and two sisters, Susan Jackson-Sharpe of Bethesda and Nancy Jackson-Reno of Hopkinton, N.H. A funeral Mass will be offered at 1 p.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 101 Owensville Road in West River. Interment is private. Arrangements are by Hardesty Funeral Home. William Lindsey William S. "Bill" Lindsey Sr., 75, of Severna Park died of heart failure Feb. 29 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center after a long illness. Mr. Lindsey was born Sept. 2, 1932, in Baltimore. He graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va., in 1974. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War. Mr. Lindsey first worked as a jet engine mechanic at Martins State Airport. He joined the Anne Arundel County Police in 1960, working his way up through the ranks until he was promoted to Chief on February 1, 1983. He was the first commander of the research and development section in 1971, commander of the information division in 1975, and was promoted to Deputy Chief in 1979, where he was responsible for the command services division and later for the uniform division. He retired in 1986. He was a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and was asked to serve on the National Highway Safety Committee. After retirement, he spent many years at his second home in Myrtle Beach, S.C., where he enjoyed golfing, the ocean, and teaching friends how to steam crabs the Maryland way. He loved Bluegrass music, playing his guitar and singing. He was also fascinated with statistics and logic, and spent many years working with data on multitudes of topics, including sports and black jack odds. He was preceded in death by his wife, Deanna M. Lindsey, whom he married in 1956. Survivors include one son, Michael Lindsey of Eldersburg; two daughters, Deanna DiMarino of Pasadena and Laurie Andrews of Fruitland; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. Mr. Maloney was born March 18, 1961, in Washington, D.C., to Thomas and Mary Maloney of Grasonville. He enjoyed his worked at the Chesterwye Center in Grasonville, and loved to swim, dance and play bingo. Survivors include three brothers, Daniel, Michael, and Christopher Maloney; and three sisters, Teresa Maloney, Susan McNally and Kate Howard. Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Cremation and Funeral Care, 814 Bestgate Road. A memorial Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. tomorrow at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 5319 Ocean Gateway in Queenstown. Interment will be private. Carl Robbins Carl Richard Robbins, 84, of Annapolis and previously a 54-year resident of Bethesda, died of natural causes Feb. 28 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Mr. Robbins was born March 10, 1923, in Augusta, Maine. He earned a bachelor's degree in geology from the University of Maine and a master's degree in Chemistry from the University of Missouri. He worked for the U.S. Geological Survey, National Bureau of Standards for 37 years. Mr. Robbins served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a member of Sigma Xi - Scientific Honors Society and the American Ceramic Society. He enjoyed science, physics, jazz, and history. Survivors include his wife of over 60 years, Gertrude Wrena Robbin; one son, Paul Brian Robbins of Park City, Utah; one daughter, Karen Elizabeth Wyatt-Meyer of Annapolis; and one grandchild. A memorial gathering will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St. A Celebration of Life Tribute will follow at 1 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Alzheimer's Association, 1850 York Road, Suite D, Timonium, MD 21093-5142.
