Today's obituaries recognize: Virginia Gendal, Francis Goode, Ted Gould, Sarah McAllister, Maude Meade

Virginia Gendal

 

Virginia M. Gendal, 94, of Chestertown, died March 3 at Chester River Hospital Center.

 

Mrs. Gendal was born March 23, 1913, in Altoona, Pa., to the late Joseph J. and Renetta Riley. She graduated from Altoona High School.

A beautician, she owned a beauty salon. She also sold women's clothing for specialty shops.

She was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church of Altoona.

She enjoyed playing the piano and organ, and she performed in musicals conducted by her father.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Aaron Gendel; two brothers, Jack and Jim Riley; and one sister, Louise Hammond.

Survivors include two sons, Joel Taylor of Chestertown and William Lockerby of Las Vegas; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road in Chestertown.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Lakemont Memorial Gardens, 900 W. Central Ave. in Davidsonville, where interment will follow.


Francis Goode

Francis "Frank" Marion Goode, 93, of Friendship and formerly of New Carrollton, died March 3 in his home.

He was born Aug. 9, 1914, on his family farm in Bryantown to the late George Perry and Mary Emily Gray Goode. He attended St. Mary's School.

He started working at the age of 16 as both a mechanic and an automotive parts salesman for the Miller-Dudley Company in both Washington, D.C., and later in Beltsville. He retired at the age of 63 to care for his sister, who had lived with polio since her childhood.

He enjoyed fishing and landscape gardening

He was preceded in death by three brothers, George Perry Goode Jr., Thomas Marcena Gray Goode and John Ellswort Goode Sr.; and three sisters, Catherine Eliza Goode Hook, Mary Helen and Margaret Ruth Goode.

Survivors include two nieces, Jacqueline Lauer of Friendship and Joan Shepherd of Lothian; and one nephew, John E. Goode Jr. of Lothian.

A memorial Mass will be offered at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 101 Owensville Road in West River.

Interment will be in the Washington National Cemetery in Suitland. Arrangements are by Rausch Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Anne Arundel County, 6091 Franklin Gibson Road, Tracys Landing, MD 20779.


Ted Gould

Ted Gould, 61, of Laytonsville, Calif., and previously a resident of Crownsville for 15 years and of Bowie for 20 years, died of prostate cancer Feb. 29 in his second home in Malibu after a short illness.

Mr. Gould was born Dec. 13, 1946, in Arlington, Va., to Catherine Gould of Camarillo, Calif. He earned a degree in art from Bowie State University.

He owned and operated Freelance Leather Company in Annapolis and was a professional artist.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Gary Gould.

Survivors include his former wife, Anne Gould of Annapolis; three sons, Jeremy Gould of Collegeville, Pa., Wyatt Gould of Annapolis and Lukas Gould of Laytonsville; three brothers, Alan Gould of North Beach, James Gould of San Jose, Calif., and Richard Gould of Los Angeles; two sisters, Maryanne Broers of Raleigh, N.C., and Gloria Studley of Camarillo; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held March 15 at his ranch in Laytonsville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Partners Southern California, 1919 Santa Monica Blvd., Santa Monica, CA 90404.


Sarah McAllister

Sarah Laird "Cissie" McGuire-McAllister, 88, of Crofton and previously of Silver Spring, died of natural causes March 1 at Carroll County Hospital.

She was born Sept. 10, 1919, in Paisly, Scotland.

She retired from Hecht Co. and was a member of Elizabeth Ann Seton Church.

Survivors include her husband of over 60 years, Alexander McAllister; two sons, Alexander McAllister of Florida and Thomas McAllister of New Hampshire; four daughters, Jessie Shopland of Pennsylvania and Maureen Connor, Sharon McAllister-Kunkel and Coleen Mahoney, all of Maryland; 18 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial was offered at 10:30 a.m. this morning at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Crofton.

Interment was in Lakemont Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Evans Funeral Home.


Maude Meade

Maude Franklin Meade, 85, a resident of Annapolis for four years and previously of Falls Church, Va., died March 3 at Genesis Eldercare-Spa Creek Center in Annapolis after an extended illness.

Mrs. Meade was born July 13, 1922, in Stafford County, Va., and graduated from high school.

She retired from the Civil Service Commission.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Annapolis.

Mrs. Meade enjoyed playing bridge, doing crossword puzzles, traveling and watching the Washington Redskins.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, John R. Crawford, who died in 1975.

Survivors include her second husband of almost 30 years, Charles H. Meade; one daughter, Rita Demma of Annapolis; one brother, Ralph Edwards of Falmouth, Va.; and two sisters, Agnes Skinner of Port Royal, Va., and Dorothy Monroe of Falmouth.

Family and friends may visit from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. tomorrow at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St. Funeral services will follow at 11:30 a.m.

Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Annapolis.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401.
