Charlotte Mitchell

Charlotte Lee Mitchell of Edgewater loved to make people laugh. Known to many as “Miss Blossom the Clown,” she attended birthday parties, church events and charity functions, using her balloon art, games and magic tricks to entertain children and adults.

Mrs. Mitchell died of natural causes March 15 in her home; she was 64.

“She was always giving and doing anything for anybody,” said Kristy Mitchell, her daughter. “Her job was to do anything and everything for anyone who walked in front of her.”

Ms. Mitchell said that her mother bought calling cards for the homeless people who spent a week at Riva Trace Baptist Church, and donated her time and energies at charity functions.

“She made every person she came in contact with feel special, and she always put others above herself,” Ms. Mitchell said. “She taught us not to put ourselves first, and to live life unselfishly.”

Mrs. Mitchell was born Jan. 26, 1944, in Glen Ferris, W. Va., to the late Margaret and Leroy Craig. She graduated from Gauley Bridge High School in West Virginia. She completed two years of college, hoping to become a teacher, but was unable to afford the rest of her education.

Instead, she was a clown for 25 years, taking only a short break when her three children were in elementary school.
“She was outgoing, she had a humor side to her, and she loved kids - that was her calling,” Ms. Mitchell said. “She had more energy than 10 people put together; she could never sit still.”

Mrs. Mitchell worked as an administrative assistant for Volkswagon of America for 30 years, and finished her career at ARINC in Annapolis.

She was an active member of Riva Trace Baptist Church in Edgewater, and was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi and the Annapolis chapter of the Red Hat Society.
Besides being a clown, she enjoyed reading, going to the beach, and volunteering at her church. Her 3-week old granddaughter was “the love of her life.”

Survivors include her husband of 37 years, Robert Wayne Mitchell Sr.; one son, Robert Wayne “Robby” Mitchell Jr. of Edgewater; two daughters, Tammy Price of Salisbury and Kristy Mitchell of Edgewater; and her granddaughter. She was preceded in death by one brother, James Allen Craig.

Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Riva Trace Baptist Church, 475 W. Central Ave. in Davidsonville. Interment will be in Lakemont Memorial Park.
