Wednesday's obituaries recognize: Margaret Bartlett, Linda Drake, Rachel Abrams-Gray, Goldie Joyce, Linda McNicol, Elsie Nacke, Victor Perez-Sanchez, Charles Tulip Jr., Wilbur Webster and Thomas Winterfeld.
Margaret Bartlett Margaret Mary Bartlett of Gambrills died March 14 at Regency Nursing Home. She was 100 years old.
Mrs. Bartlett was born Jan. 11, 1908, in Washington, D.C., to the late William and Catherine Farrell. She worked as a secretary at the former Frank R. Jelleff Department Store. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Matlock Bartlett; six brothers; and three sisters. Survivors include one son, Charles Joseph Bartlett; five grandchildren; and two great-grandsons. Family and friends may visit at 9 a.m. tomorrow at Evans Funeral Home, 16000 Annapolis Road in Bowie. Funeral services will follow at 10 a.m. Interment is in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring. Linda Drake Linda Caroline Drake, 62, of Edinburg, Va., died March 17 in her home. Mrs. Drake was born July 8, 1945, in Washington, D.C., to the late John F. and Elsie Hubscher Krause. She was a member of Shenandoah Community Fellowship. Survivors include her husband, Raymond E. Drake; one son, Wade Drake of Annapolis; one daughter, Rayelynn Murphy of Martinsburg, W.Va.; one brother, John Krause of St. George Island, Va.; three sisters, Barbara Drake of Lusby, Donna Jones of Huntingtown in Calvert County, and Loretta Custer of St. Leonard; and four grandchildren. Family and friends may visit from 4 to 7 p.m. tomorrow at Beall Funeral Home, 6512 Crain Highway in Bowie. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Shenandoah Community Fellowship, 197 Patmos Road in Woodstock, Va. Interment will be in Sunset View Memorial Gardens. Box 813, Woodstock, VA 22664. Rachel Abrams-Gray The Rev. Mother Rachel Rebecca Abrams-Gray, 85, a resident of Annapolis for 80 years, died of natural causes March 13 at Crofton Convalescent Center. She was born Sept. 13, 1922, in Baltimore and attended Parole Elementary and the former Bates High School, Storer College, Fleet Business School, Anne Arundel Community College and Washington Bible College. She began work doing laundry at Fort George G. Meade and the Naval Academy. Later, she worked as a community outreach worker for the Community Action Agency, before working as a foster grandparent, and at Grandma's House in Robinwood. She was a caregiver at Langton Green, and worked as a legislative assistant at the Maryland House of Delegates. For several years she operated the Faith Home for the elderly and Pip's Family Daycare, named after her deceased daughter. An evangelist, she preached the gospel message nationally and internationally; she was the church mother of First Christian Community Church, and was a member of King's Apostle Holiness Churches, Inc., Jesus Saves Family Ministry, and the Evangelist Association. She enjoyed developing businesses, mentoring, reading, memorizing poetry, traveling, spending time with family and friends and helping those in need. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Gwendolyn "Pip" Gray. Survivors include her husband of over 60 years, Brewer Gray Sr.; three sons, Michael Gray of Upper Marlboro, Brewer Gray Jr. of Glen Burnie and Peter Gray of Severn; three daughters, Mary Gray of Annapolis, Evelyn Mason of Glen Burnie and Joy Williams of Arlington, Texas; one brother, Aaron Abrams of Baltimore; two sisters, Willie Issacs of Baltimore and Esther Murray of Denton; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Family and friends may visit from 9 to 10:15 a.m. Saturday at First Community Church, 1800 Hall Brown Road, followed by a praise and worship service at 10:30 a.m. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be Monday in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville. Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary, where flowers may be sent. Goldie Joyce Goldie Joyce, 82, a resident of Mayo for 40 years, died of natural causes March 17 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Mrs. Joyce was born Aug. 23, 1925, in Mayo, where she attended public schools. She was a domestic worker for many years. A member of Hope Memorial-St. Mark United Methodist Church, she enjoyed gospel music and her family: four sons, four daughters, 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Joyce. A Christian wake will be held at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at First Baptist Church of Annapolis, 31 W. Washington St. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m.; interment is in Bestgate Memorial park. Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary. Linda McNicol Linda Ann "Lin" McNicol, 62, of Livingston, Texas, and previously of Grasonville, died of a brain tumor March 13 at Kindred Hospital after an illness of three months. Mrs. McNicol was born Aug. 24, 1945, in Baltimore to Marie Soutar of Pasadena, and attended Severna Park High School. She retired from Safeway. She was a member of United Communities Volunteer Fire Department and the Escapees RV Club. Survivors include her husband, Stuart D. McNicol; her former husband, Robert L. Butler; one son, Robert Butler of Tennessee; two daughters, Kim Herring of Coconut Creek, Fla., and Beverly Coursey of Stevensville; two stepdaughters, Heather and Melissa McNicol of Stevensville; two brothers, Paul Soutar of Wichita, Kan., and David Soutar of Pasadena; one sister, Carol Soutar of Glen Burnie; and six grandchildren. A memorial service will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. April 6 at Long Point Improvement Association, 1534 Long Point Road in Pasadena. Interment is private. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to Escapees CARE, Inc., 155 Care Center Drive, Livingston, TX 77351. Elsie Nacke Elsie May G. "MeMaw" Nacke, 91, a resident of Mayo for over 40 years and previously of Adelphi, died of cancer March 17 in her home after a month-long illness. Mrs. Nacke was born Dec. 19, 1916, in Washington, D. C., to the late William and Sadie Halley. The Great Depression forced her to quit high school in the 10th grade. Mrs. Nacke began working at a Woolworth's 5 and 10 Store. In 1942, she started working for the Navy as a GS-1 clerk typist, and worked her way up to contract specialist and supervisory contract negotiator at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of New Carrollton, the American Indian Intertribal Cultural Organization, the Nause-Waiwash Band of Indians, and Women of the Moose. She enjoyed gardening, canning, knitting, entertaining, and playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin G. Nacke. Survivors include one son, Daniel L. Gray of Edgewater; two daughters, Cecelia Rinehart of Mayo and Elenora Musgrove of Delaware and Maryland; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Family and friends may join in the celebration of her life at 11 a.m. Friday at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater. Interment is private. Victor Perez-Sanchez Retired Army Master Sgt. Victor Manuel Perez-Sanchez, 52, of Severn, died March 14 at Seasons Hospice Inpatient Unit in Randallstown. Master Sgt. Perez-Sanchez was born March 22, 1955, in Puerto Rico to Abraham Perez and the late Francisca Perez. He served in the Army from 1976 to 1997. A member of Club Puerto Rico of Maryland, he loved bowling and enjoyed watching basketball games and the ESPN sports network. Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Maritza Perez; two daughters, Yalisa Perez of Pasadena and Yaira Perez of Severn; two brothers; and one sister. Funeral services were held today at Donaldson Funeral Home and Crematory. Interment was in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville. Charles Tulip Jr. Charles Tulip Jr., 73, of Chester and previously of Virginia and Annapolis, died March 17 in his home. Mr. Tulip was born June 10, 1934, in New York and was raised in Detroit, where he attended Wayne State University. He was a fellow of the National Institute of Public Affairs and received a master's degree in Public Administration from Indiana University. He worked in Washington, D.C., with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and retired in 1999 as the chief financial officer of Goddard Space Flight Center. During his career, he was a charter member of the Senior Executive Service, earned the NASA Exceptional Service Medal and the Space Ship Earth Award and was named a Presidential Meritorious Executive. He was active in the Boy Scouts in Virginia and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award for Distinguished Service to Youth. He was actively involved with the United States Power Squadrons, serving in 1994 as the Commander of Annapolis Power Squadron and of District 5 in 1999. He currently was serving as national staff commander. He was an active member of the Kent Island Yacht Club, the Marine Trawler Owners Association, and the D5 Henry Sweet Fund. He loved boating, going on trips on the Intracoastal Waterway, the Trent Severn Waterway in Canada and up and down the Chesapeake Bay on his trawler, the Sea Tulip. He enjoyed reading Nero Wolfe mysteries, watching old movies and working crossword puzzles. Survivors include his wife, Carole Tulip; two sons, Charles Tulip III of Seaford, N.Y., and Christopher D. Tulip of Richmond, Va.; one daughter, Catherine Pritchard of Vienna, Va.; one brother, William D. Tulip of Howell, Mich.; and three grandchildren. Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 6:30 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. "Stub" Webster Jr., 84, of Annapolis died of complications of heart failure March 13 at Severn House. Mr. Webster was born June 24, 1923, in Winchedon, Mass., to the late Emma A. and Wilbur E. Webster Sr. He was raised in Jaffrey, N.H., and attended the Governor Dummer Academy. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1947. In a career that spanned over 28 years, he rose to the position of vice-president at the firm of Peterson, Howell and Heather in Baltimore. He served in the Navy as a Lieutenant during World War II, flying a Grumman Hellcat night-fighter off the aircraft carrier, the USS Hornet. He was a member of Potapskut Sailing Association, where he served as commodore, the Annapolis Yacht Club, where he was on the race committee, Sailing Club of the Chesapeake and Windjammers of the Chesapeake, where he also served as commodore. He was an avid sailor and also enjoyed bicycling, reading and fine dining. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Phyllis Smith Webster; and his second wife, Nancy Gallishaw Webster. Survivors include two sons, Wilbur E. "Burr" Webster III of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Philip S. Webster of Miami; two daughters, Patricia Beatley-Patterson of Severna Park, and Kimball W. Miller of Sterling, Va; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Family and friends may join a celebration of his life from 6 to 10 p.m. May 30 at the Severn House community pool area off of Fairview Avenue in Annapolis. Arrangements are by Taylor Funeral Home. Thomas Winterfeld Thomas Henry Winterfeld, 84, a resident of Severna Park for 14 years, died of pneumonia March 10 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center after a week-long illness. Mr. Winterfeld was born Sept. 21, 1923, in Berlin, Germany, and was raised in Berlin, Vienna, Austria; and Paris. He earned a master's degree at Northwestern University. He worked as a Oceanographer for the Department of Commerce-NOAA, Unicef, and other agencies. He served in the Army during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Sue T. Newman Winterfeld; one son, Dorian Winterfeld of Greenbelt; two stepsons, David Turner and Mark Turner of Queen Anne; and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bond Chapel, 6735 Quaker Neck Road in Chestertown. Interment will be private. Arrangements are by Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home.
