Monday's obituaries recognize: Eleanor Hogate, Marvin Luzier, Oma Marsellas, Mary McDermott and Richard Perry

Eleanor Hogate

Eleanor Hogate, 94, a resident of Pasadena for 56 years, died of complications from a stroke May 9 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center.

Mrs. Hogate was born April 18, 1914, in Salem, N.J., to the late Francis and Lydia Parkell.

She worked for over 20 years at the former Hochschild Kohn Department Store, retiring in 1976.

She belonged to St. Jane's and Poplar Ridge Senior clubs, where she enjoyed visiting with friends and playing bingo.

Mrs. Hogate enjoyed crocheting, creating afghans for nearly every member of her family; travel; and spending time with family and friends. An avid Orioles and Ravens fan, she followed them on TV. She also enjoyed times at the Ocean Pines beach house, occasional RV trips with her son, and her reclining chair.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Grover Hogate; her former husband, Wilbert Conover; and one son, Francis "Boe" Conover.

Survivors include one son, Wilbert "Zeke" Conover of Pasadena; two daughters, Dolores Campbell of Florida and Gale Tayman of Pasadena; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Gonce Funeral Home, 169 Riviera Drive in Pasadena.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow at the funeral home, with interment immediately following in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.

Marvin Luzier

Marvin James Luzier, 85, a resident of Severna Park for seven years and formerly of Clearfield, Pa., died of natural causes May 9 at Sunrise Assisted Living of Severna Park.

Mr. Luzier was born Sept. 13, 1922, in Woodland, Pa., to the late Lloyd and Hazel Poorman Luzier.

He retired from the federal government after over 30 years of service as a programmer systems analyst.

He served in World War II in the Army Air Corps.

Mr. Luzier was a member of the American Legion Post 7 in Annapolis, as well as the Clearfield Legion.

He enjoyed cars.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Luzier.

Survivors include two sons, Mike Luzier of Severna Park and Ron Luzier of Chesapeake Beach; two brothers, Glenn Luzier of Clearfield and Ronald Luzier of Florida; two sisters, Donna McKracken and Dorothy Smeal of Clearfield; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Family and friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Hardesty Funeral Home, 851 Annapolis Road in Gambrills.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Brethren Church, 9870 Old Solomons Island Road in Owings. Interment will be in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.

Oma Marsellas

Oma Leota "Lee" Marsellas, 92, a resident of Annapolis for over 60 years, died of cancer May 9 in her home.

Mrs. Marsellas was born May 29, 1915, in Mathias, W. Va., to the late Russell and Victoria Shipe Dispanet.

She retired in the late 1970s after more than 15 years of service with the Maryland State Central Payroll Office.

She was the oldest member of Weems Creek Baptist Church, where she was active in the Ladies' Sunday School classes.

She enjoyed yard work.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Melvin Marsellas, who died in 1988; one son, Thomas Marsellas; and one daughter, Bertie Cannon.

Survivors include one son, Melvin Marsellas Jr. of Annapolis; one daughter, Emily Wallace of Annapolis; two sisters, Reta Wilkins and Madeline Cullers of Mathias; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Weems Creek Baptist Church, 600 N. Bestgate Road. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Annapolis.

Mary McDermott

Mary Agnes McDermott, 67, a native of Ireland and a resident of Arnold for the past 30 years, died of heart disease May 9 at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Mrs. McDermott was born Nov. 18, 1940, in West Meath, Ireland.

She enjoyed gardening and traveling back to Ireland, and was a devoted wife and mother.

Survivors include her husband, Kevin McDermott; one son, Kevin Patrick McDermott of Annapolis; one daughter, Sheila Ann Norris; and one grandson.

Family and friends may visit from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 689 Ritchie Highway in Severna Park. Interment will be private.

Richard Perry

Richard D. "Rick" Perry, 73, a resident of Arnold for 23 years and previously of Severna Park, died May 9 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a brief illness.

Mr. Perry was born March 29, 1935, in Baltimore, where he was also raised.

He worked for 32 years as a field engineer for Westinghouse.

He served in the Coast Guard from 1953 to 1956.

Mr. Perry loved woodworking in his shop, working on his antique cars and doing yard work.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Betty A. Perry; three sons, Mike K. Mahrer of San Diego, Calif., Ricky Perry of Linthicum and Eddie Perry of Hanover; three daughters, Kimberly A. Spinelli of Glen Burnie, Laurie A. Ferguson of Denton and Laura Diegel of Severn; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

A memorial visitation will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401.
