Today's obituaries recognize: Peter Benbury, Suzanne Erwetowski, Clarence Johnson, Byron Lovell, Julius Mann, Florence Nalley, Diane Pace, Dorothy Stevens and Hubert Welder.

Peter Benbury

Peter Jones Benbury, 60, of Mayo, died May 12 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a long illness. 

Mr. Benbury was born Feb. 7, 1948, in Philadelphia to the late George White and Marion Jones Benbury. He attended college for two years.

He moved to Annapolis in the early 1970s and became a ships carpenter, working at John Trumpy and Sons. He later worked in other yards and was also self-employed.

Mr. Benbury developed a love of boats at a very early age, and sailing was one of his favorite pastimes. He also had an appreciation for art, music, literature and the theater. He loved animals and had several exotic pets. He enjoyed entertaining at his home and telling stories to make people laugh.

Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Karen Zak Benbury; and one brother, George Benbury of Sarasota, Fla.

Family and friends may visit at 2 p.m. Monday at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m., and interment is private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, Navy Point, P.O. Box 636, St. Michaels, MD 21633.

Suzanne Erwetowski

Suzanne Polowy Erwetowski, 51, of Odenton, died of natural causes May 3 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Mrs. Erwetowski was born June 23, 1956, in New Jersey to Henry and Joanne Polowy of New Bloomfield, Mo. She attended Jefferson City High School and earned a bachelor's degree in physics and electrical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1977, a master's degree in space systems management from Webster University, and she was studying at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.

She was the first woman engineer at Western Electric Plant in Baltimore, and she worked at Westinghouse Defense and Electronics from 1983 to 1986 and as a mathematics instructor at Metro State College from 1987 to 1989.

She was currently working as the chief of investment planning and signals intelligence analysis and production directorate at the National Security Agency.

She received a letter of endorsement for the Defense Leadership and Management Program for National Security Agency and Central Security Service.

She enjoyed sailing, animals, racquetball, fencing and playing bridge. She was a Silver Life Master in the America Contract Bridge League and competed across the country. She was among the top 10 players in Colorado, won numerous tournaments, and taught and directed bridge clubs. She was a member of the fencing team at Stevens Institute of Technology.

Survivors include her husband, Charles "Chuck" Erwetowski; one son, Jeffrey Erwetowski of Odenton; one brother, Greg Polowy of Jefferson City, Mo.; and four sisters, Marlena Boggs of Lees Summit, Mo., Vivienne Schorr of South Beloit, Ill., Renee Geile of St. Peters, Mo., and Brandee Murphy of Oakton, Va.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Epiphany Episcopal Church, 1419 Odenton Road in Odenton.

A celebration of her life and second memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday by the water at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces at Fort McNair in Washington, D.C. Arrangements are by Donaldson Funeral Home and Crematory.

Clarence Johnson

Clarence Isaiah "C.I." Johnson, 89, a 50-year resident of Annapolis, died May 10 in his home.

Mr. Johnson was born April 18, 1919, in Brownswoods to the late Rev. Clarence M. and Mary C. Adams Johnson. He attended county schools.

He worked for the Naval Academy as a heavy equipment operator, bus driver and chauffeur. He retired after 32 years and worked as custodian for his church.

He served as a Tech Sergeant in the Army from 1941 to 1945 in the 93rd Engineer Regiment, one of the three all-black regiments that participated in the construction of the Alaskan-Canadian Highway during World War II. He received the Bronze Star Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon, American Defense Service Ribbon and the American Campaign Ribbon.

He was a member of Asbury Broadneck United Methodist Church, where he served on the administrative, trustee and usher boards; the pastor parish; and the finance, building and improvement committees. He was a member of the United Methodist Men, Sons and Daughters of Joshua, Singing and Praying Band, the Original Young Adult Choir, Male Chorus, Angelic Celestial and Chancel Choirs, and the Spars Senior Ministry.

He was also a member of the Rising Sun Lodge 46, Royal Arch Hope 5, Knights of Temple, Hiriam Consistory 2, 32nd Degree, Miriam Chapter 24, OES, Peerless Rens Social Club, Ancient City Lodge of Elks 175, Ravens Roost 35, American Legion post 141, Disabled Veterans Association and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He enjoyed bowling, baseball, football and traveling.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Hilton I. and Thomas M. Johnson Sr.; and three sisters, Dorothy G. Price, Naomi C. Crowoy and Ruth H. Pack.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Alverta E. Johnson; one brother, Amos R. Johnson Sr. of Annapolis; and two sisters, the Rev. Callie Matthews of Annapolis and Eloise Boston of Pasadena.

Family and friends may join in the celebration of his life, beginning with a viewing at 9 a.m. tomorrow at Asbury Broadneck United Methodist Church, 657 Broadneck Road. A Christian wake will follow at 11 a.m., and a celebration service will begin at noon.

Interment will be in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville; arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary.


Byron Lovell

Incorrect information was published in the obituary for Byron Ervin Lovell, 63, of Odenton, in Tuesday's edition of The Capital.

A memorial service will be held at noon Wednesday at Donaldson Funeral Home and Crematory, 1411 Annapolis Road in Odenton. Survivors include his mother, Helen Lovell of Cornish, N.H.


Julius Mann

Retired Army Col. Julius W. Mann, 94, of Charlestown Retirement Village in Catonsville and previously of Annapolis, died of heart failure May 13 in his home after a year-long illness.

Col. Mann was born Sept. 16, 1913, in Aliquippa, Pa., and earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy from the University of Wisconsin in 1939.

He worked in the steel mills in Aliquippa prior to entering the military; afterwards, he worked for the federal government at the Pentagon.

Col. Mann began his service in 1940, serving in Europe during World War II and in Korea. He received the American Campaign and Victory Medals, and the Bronze star for his service in Korea.

He enjoyed traveling extensively with his wife after his retirement.

Survivors include his wife of over 50 years, Joan Marie Mann; one daughter, Diane Marie Shickman of Arnold; and two grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St. Interment is private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 411 Fairview Drive, Chestertown, MD 21620.

Florence Nalley

Florence "Flo" Elizabeth Nalley, 88, a resident of Crofton for 36 years, died of congestive heart failure May 13 in her home after a year-long illness.

Mrs. Nalley was born Feb. 19, 1920, in Peoria, Ill., to the late Charles J. and Lillie S. Grossenbach. She attended high school.

She worked as a data entry processor at A.D.C.

She was a founding member of Community United Methodist Church.

Known as the "Candy Lady," she made buckeyes and barbecue sauce and was an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Nalley, who died in 2002; one son, John R. Nalley Jr.; one brother, Harold Grossenbach; and one sister, Lucille Peters.

Survivors include one son, Michael J. Nalley of Crofton; one sister, Margaret Neiman; and three grandsons.

Family and friends may visit from 5 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Evans Funeral Home, 16000 Annapolis Road in Bowie.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401.


Diane Pace

Diane Marie Pace, 52, a resident of Annapolis 39 years, died of complications from a hemorrhagic stroke May 13 at the Hospice of the Chesapeake in Linthicum after a four-week illness.

Mrs. Pace was born June 27, 1955, in Malden, Mass., to Stuart and Irene Henry of Port Orange, Fla. She moved to Arnold in 1969, where she graduated from Severna Park High School in 1973 and Annapolis Cosmetology School in 1975.

She was a former member of Gloria Dei! Lutheran Church of Arnold.

She enjoyed watching birds, water gardening, camping, hiking, kayaking and motorcycling. She loved and nurtured all animals, especially her puppies.

Survivors include her husband of 18 years, Emanuel Pace; two sons, Brandon and Daryl Pace; one daughter, Amanda Pace; and one sister, Linnea Horine of Arnold.

A memorial service and reception will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at New Hope Chapel, 804 Windsor Ave., in Arnold. Interment will be in Bestgate Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to a local S.P.C.A.


Dorothy Stevens

Dorothy R. Stevens, 82, of Catonsville, died of natural causes May 13 at the Forest Haven Nursing Home in Catonsville.

Mrs. Stevens was born Aug. 16, 1925, in Saginaw, Mich., where she was raised. She lived in Arnold for four and a half years, and she previously lived in Bay City, Mich., and Gulf Shores, Ala.

She was a homemaker who enjoyed reading and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Stevens, who died in 1978.

Survivors include two sons, Mark Stevens of Bay City and Scott Stevens of Atlanta; two daughters, Linda Williams of Arnold and Leslie Blakely of Annapolis; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

A memorial Mass will be offered at 9 a.m. tomorrow at St. Andrew by the Bay Roman Catholic Church, 701 College Parkway. Interment will be private. Arrangements are by Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 1850 York Road, Suite D, Timonium, MD 21093.

Hubert Welder

Hubert "Bill" Welder, 84, of North Port, Fla., for 20 years and a summer resident of Annapolis, died May 9 in his home.

Mr. Welder was born Oct. 9, 1923, in Baltimore.

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Edna Welder; two sons, Bill Welder of Key West, Fla., and Bob Welder of Grand Island, Fla.; one stepson, Gary Neal of Hawaii; one stepdaughter, Cheryl Cerbone of Texas; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

A Mass of Christian burial was offered at San Pedro Catholic Church, with entombment following in Venice Memorial Gardens. Arrangements were by Farley Funeral Home in North Port.
