Monday's obituaries recognize: Barbara Alsop, Martin Bennett, Rick Lee Colbert, Charles Main, Harold Showacre, and Dorothy Valentine

Barbara Alsop 

Barbara Alsop, 69, a resident of Crofton, died of natural causes July 2 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. She was born Dec. 17, 1938, in Trinidad, West Indies.

Ms. Alsop worked at the Crownsville State Hospital Center for 28 years.

She is survived by one daughter Beverly Alsop-Robinson; and two sisters, Gloria Johnson and Clarice Gibson.

A private memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Reese & Sons Mortuary, 821 West St.

Martin Bennett

Dr. Martin K. Bennett, 90, a 20-year resident of Annapolis and formerly of northern Virginia, died of pneumonia July 5 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Dr. Bennett was born Aug. 2, 1917, and raised in New York. He was retired from the Food and Drug Administration where he worked as a chemist for 30 years.

He graduated from Columbia University with a master's degree followed by his doctorate of pharmacy.

He was a former member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He loved spending time with his family and helping his late wife Dorothy Bennett in her practice as a portrait artist.

He was preceded in death by one son, Robert Bennett, one sister, Adele Lebenson and one brother, Dr. Howard Bennett.

Survivors include one daughter, Margery Puccinelli of Millersville; three sons, Richard Bennett of Garner, N.C., Barton Bennett of Herndon, Va., and Steven Bennett of Annapolis; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visitation is from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. tomorrow followed by a 10:30 a.m. funeral service at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Best Buddies of Maryland, 3500 Boston St., Suite 210 MS-47, Baltimore, MD 21224 or to the Epilepsy Foundation, 8301 Professional Place East, Landover, MD 20785.

Rick Lee Colbert

Rick Lee Colbert, 59, a resident of Edgewater for over 40 years, died of complications from diabetes and heart failure July 4 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Mr. Colbert was born Oct. 1, 1948, in Akron, Ohio. He graduated from Annapolis High School and worked as a route salesman for the Coca Cola Company and later worked at ARINC as a shipping clerk.

He served in the Army during the Vietnam war, receiving the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the combat infantryman's badge, the Army Commendation Medal, the Air Medal and a Bronze Star Medal.

He enjoyed teaching Sunday and Bible schools, being a Deacon and usher at church, and studying scripture. He also enjoyed sports. He was an active member of the Anchor Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Annette S. Colbert; three children, Carie Anne Reverski of Catonsville, Micah Richard Colbert of Millersville and Camarie Lyn Colbert of Edgewater; one brother, two sisters and three grandchildren.

Friends are invited to join in the celebration of his life from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, P.A., 2973 Solomons Island Rd. Edgewater. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Anchor Baptist Church, 320 West Pasadena Road in Millersville. The interment is at Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Anchor Baptist Church Mission Fund. Charles Main

Charles Leazer Main, 64, of Lothian died of natural causes July 3 on at the Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Mr. Main was born Sept. 13, 1943, in Frederick to the late Charles Main Sr. and Bessie Jones Main. He served in the Army from 1963 to 1965, and worked as an electrician for Advance Electric for 35 years. He was a member of Local 26 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Elizabeth Main; two sons Charles III and Jonathan Main; one daughter, Veronica Main; two brothers, Chester and Lewis Main; one sister, Patricia Slater; and three grandchildren.

Visitation is from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Raymond-Wood Funeral Home, 10684 Southern Maryland Blvd. Route 4 South in Dunkirk. Funeral services and interment will be private.

Harold Showacre

Harold Gerstell Showacre, 89, a 61-year resident of Annapolis, died of natural causes July 5 at his home.

Born April 20, 1919, in Mount Vista, to the late Rev. Edgar H. and Elsie Gerstell Showacre, he grew up in Baltimore County, Baltimore City, Cockeysville, Hagerstown, and Laurel.

During his youth, he sailed on a merchant vessel, and worked at the Sparrow's Point steel plant in electrical maintenance while attending the University of Maryland at College Park, where he was a charter member of Phi Delta Kappa. In 1942 he earned his bachelor of science degree followed by a master's degree from the University of Maryland.

He worked in the defense field building experimental aircraft, and machining parts.

During World War II he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was undergoing flight training when the war ended. He then began teaching industrial arts at Alice Deale Junior High, followed by science for the remainder of his career. He also taught at Severn School and in the summer, worked at the Trumpy Boat Yard in Eastport doing marine construction.

His interests included gardening, travel, making stained glass art and woodworking. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church since 1946 where his father was a minister. Mr. Showacre was preceded in death by his sister Christiana Harrison Showacre Alexander.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Mary Alice Showacre; two sons, Robert Harold Showacre of Elkridge and Ronald Gerstell Showacre of Pasadena; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1300 West St. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Interment will follow at Druid Ridge Cemetery in Pikesville. Family and friends are invited to visit at his home in Annapolis from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday .

Dorothy Valentine

Dorothy Yvonne Grizzel Valentine, 61, a resident of Edgewater for 38 years, died of renal cell carcinoma July 5 at her home.

Mrs. Valentine was born on Dec. 13, 1946 in Williamson, W.Va., to Lucille Bowling of Irvine, Ky., and the late A.K. Grizzel.

She graduated from Belfry High School and worked as an office manager for the American Boat and Yacht Council.

She received the ''Fraternalist of the Year'' Award from the Modern Woodmen of America. She was a member of Riva Trace Baptist Church for 18 years.

Her interests included Scrabble, crochet, and most recently fishing.

Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Peter Valentine of Edgewater; three sons, Johnathan Valentine of California in St. Mary's County; Brian Valentine of Mount Joy, Pa.; and Joseph Valentine of Salisbury; one daughter, Melody Prairie of Cambridge; two brothers, Kenneth and Ronald Grizzel, of Cincinnati, Ohio; two sisters, Linda Grizzel of Richmond, Va., and Sally Frye of Albuquerque, N.M.; and six grandchildren.

Friends are invited to join in her life celebration from 1 to 3 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the Kalas Funeral Home 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Riva Trace Baptist Church, 475 West Central Ave., Davidsonville. Interment is at Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery. Online condolences can be made at www.kalasfuneralhomes.com.
