Obituaries for July 8

Tuesday's obituaries recognize: Rick Colbert, Bobbie Davenport, Karin Hester, Sandra McHugh, Mary Ann Mykyta, Francis Romanelli and James Ware.

Rick Colbert 

Incorrect information was published in the obituary for Rick Lee Colbert, 59, of Edgewater, in yesterday's edition of The Capital.

Interment will be held in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville. His son's name is Micah Richard Colbert.

Bobbie Davenport

Bobbie Eugene Davenport, 68, a resident of Arnold for 25 years and formerly of Severna Park, died of heart failure July 5 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a long illness.

Mr. Davenport was born Sept. 27, 1939, and raised in Grimesland, N.C.

He worked at Pepco as a lineman, then a truck driver. He was also a retired mechanic and a tow truck driver at the Benfield Shell.

Mr. Davenport was a previous member of the American Legion Post 175.

He enjoyed shooting pool, riding horses, boating and watching TV, especially wrestling.

He was preceded in death by his wife of over 40 years, Mildred Ann Davenport, who died in 2005; one brother, David Davenport; and one sister, Louraye Cherry.

Survivors include two sons, Earl "Gene" E. Davenport of Severna Park and Bruce A. Davenport of Glen Burnie; three sisters, Mavis Whitaker and Diane Davis of North Carolina and Nancy Harrison of Grimesland; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be private.

Paris Genalis

Paris Genalis, 66, of Annapolis, died of multiple myeloma June 30 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Dr. Genalis was born Jan. 29, 1942, to Betty Palaska of Athens, Greece, and the late Alki Genalis. He earned a doctorate degree in naval architecture and marine engineering from the University of Michigan, and a professional degree in naval architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, among others.

He worked as a Naval architect, scientist, teacher and former director of acquisitions for the Department of Defense. He was an active mentor to his colleagues. He was also a consultant to the Office of Naval Research and the former director, Naval Warfare, Office of the Secretary of Defense before retiring in 2007.

He received the 2001 Presidential Rank Award - Distinguished Executive, the 1998 Presidential Rank Award - Meritorious Executive and numerous Department of Defense awards.

He was an avid sailor and scuba diver instructor, and he loved music, especially jazz.

He also enjoyed traveling, sailing, scuba diving and dancing with his wife.

Survivors include his wife, Dorcus Gray; and two stepchildren, Megan and Ethan Gray of Boston, Mass.

A celebration of his life will be held in September in Annapolis. Arrangements are by Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home.

Karin Hester

Karin U. Hester, 73, of Odenton, died July 3 in her home.

Mrs. Hester was born April 26, 1935, in Berlin, Germany, to the late Eberhard and Herta Scheller.

She worked for the military clothing store on Fort George G. Meade for 28 years.

Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Joseph F. Hester; one son, Michael Hester of McLean, Va.; two daughters, Jeanette Roland of Lusby and Dorothy Harting of Bowie; and six grandchildren.

Graveside services were held at 11:30 a.m. today at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville. Arrangements are by the Donaldson Funeral Home and Crematory.

Sandra McHugh

Sandra J. McHugh, 66, a longtime resident of Annapolis, died July 4 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

Ms. McHugh was born June 5, 1942, to the late A. Franklin and Alma G. Bowers.

She worked for the Anne Arundel County Board of Education for 10 years and was previously employed with Travel Unlimited of Severna Park and Triple A of Annapolis.

She enjoyed her dogs, reading, gardening and floral designs.

Survivors include three daughters, Frankie Porter of Davidsonville, Kim Brooks of Mountain Lake Park and Tracy Miller of Stevensville; one sister, Kay Poole of Lewes, Del.; and six grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow at Cape St. Claire United Methodist Church, 855 Chestnut Tree Drive. Arrangements are by Kalas Funeral Home.

Mary Ann Mykyta

Mary Ann Mykyta, 70, of Crofton and formerly of Harrisburg, Pa., died July 3 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Mrs. Mykyta was born Aug. 5, 1937, in Milford, Del., to the late Roland and Anna King Walls. She graduated from Sanford Preparatory School in 1955 and earned a R.N. degree at Memorial Hospital Nursing School.

She began her career as a nurse at Wilmington Memorial Hospital; once her children were raised, she earned her real estate license and worked for Weinberg Real Estate in Harrisburg.

Later, she worked as the marketing director for Astrotech, Inc., a division of Certified Testing Labs and was appointed as director of the Allentown office.

She ended her career at Dauphin Manor, where she began as a nursing supervisor. She then became the assistant director and director of nursing, and retired as a nursing home administrator in 1994.

Mrs. Mykyta was a member of St. Ann's Byzantine Catholic Church in Harrisburg.

She was devoted to her family and cared for husband's parents and uncle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lubomyr Mykyta.

Survivors include one son, John L. Mykyta of Crofton; three daughters, Maria L. Tershak of Palmyra, Pa., Natalie V. Dekle of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Laryssa A. Mykyta of Philadelphia; and seven grandchildren.

A Parastas was held yesterday at Zimmerman Auer Funeral Home.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. today at St. Ann's Byzantine Church, 5408 Locust Lane in Harrisburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sanford School, P.O. Box 888, Hockessin, DE 19707-0888.

Francis Romanelli

Francis Romanelli, 72, of Bowie, died of lymphoma July 6 at his home.

Mr. Romanelli was born Jan. 6, 1936, in Beacon, N.Y., to the late Rose Soldiveria and John Romanelli. He graduated from Beacon High School and Fairleigh Dickinson University in Rutherford, N.J.

Mr. Romanelli retired in 1991 from the Internal Revenue Service after 28 years. He served as a field investigator in the IRS Newark, N.J., and Washington, D.C., offices. He later became a tax law specialist and senior criminal investigation analyst in the IRS headquarters in Washington, D.C. He was also a certified public accountant.

He served in the Army for two years.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Church and the Sacred Heart Council of the Knights of Columbus in Bowie. He was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels.

He was preceded in death by one brother, John Romanelli; and two sisters, Rose Ross and Ann Marie McCollum.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Mary Ellen Burke Romanelli; one daughter, Beth R. Hickam of Bel Air; two sisters, Mary Collins of Beacon, N.Y., and Dolores Lewis of Tulsa, Okla.; two brothers, Leonard Romanelli of Beacon and Vincent Romanelli of Tom's River, N.J.; and three grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Beall Funeral Home, 6512 NW Crain Highway, Bowie.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Chapel, 16501 Annapolis Road in Bowie. Interment is in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Bowie, MD 21041.

James Ware

Retired Marine Lt. Col. James G. Ware, 62, of Arnold, died unexpectedly July 5 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. A full story ran in yesterdays edition of The Capital.

Lt. Col. Ware was born June 18, 1946, in St. Louis, Mo. He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1970 and received master's degrees from the Naval Postgraduate School in electrical engineering and from the University of Southern California in systems management.

He served in the Marine Corps for 28 years and received the Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service and Meritorious Service Medal.

From 1985 to 1988, he taught electrical engineering at the Naval Academy.

He was also retired from the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology, where he was employed for 10 years as the company's Director of Information Systems and Technology. He taught math at South River High School and was a volunteer AVID tutor at Broadneck High School.

A 25-year resident of the Broadneck peninsula, Lt. Col. Ware served as head coach of the Broadneck Senior High School girls softball team for the past 11 seasons, leading them to back-to-back county championships. He also was the founder and coach of the Chesapeake Freedom Softball team and was involved in Cape St. Claire youth athletics and Broadneck youth sports since 1984.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Anna Marie Dochnal.

Survivors include his former wife, Mary Ware; his stepfather, Frank Dochnal; one son, Patrick Ware; one daughter, Beth Ware; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the gymnasium at Broadneck High School. Attendees are encouraged to wear maroon and gray, Broadneck's school colors, and are welcome to bring food or refreshments. Arrangements are by Taylor Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Broadneck High School Athletic Boosters.
