Wednesday's obituaries recognize: Clinton Brown, Vernon Christensen, Rosemary D'Angelo, Dale Dunlap, Nathaniel Everett, Richard Hirschauer, Irvin Smith and James Varipapa Clinton Brown Clinton Eugene Brown, 88, of Heritage Harbour died of cancer July 21 in his home- almost exactly 39 years after the Apollo lunar module he helped design landed on the moon. He was born June 1, 1920, in New York City and was raised in Madison, N.J. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering from Purdue University. He also attended Gottingen University in West Germany. He served in the Army during World War II, assigned to NASA to pursue critical wartime work. He also worked in jet propulsion and supersonic aeronautics and was awarded the Rockefeller Public Service Award. He later headed a team at NASA, designing the Apollo lunar landing module. He taught the first seven astronauts and others at NASA orbital mechanics and space flight. He taught graduate courses at the University of Virginia, the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University. In 1964, he joined Hydronautics, Inc., focusing on artificial kidney research, desalination, ocean thermal energy, marine physiology and aircraft wake vortices. In 1984 he retired from NASA and worked part time at Dynaflo on a poison gas detection project. He was active on many committees at Heritage Harbour. He belonged to Glen Burnie United Methodist Church and was a member of the American Legion and the Fleet Reserve Club. He enjoyed playing the piano and trumpet and loved listening to music, swimming, playing tennis, and sailing. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Poythress. Survivors include his second wife of over 40 years, Jeanie Brown; two sons, Dale Brown of Greensboro, N.C., and Gary Brown of Norfolk, Va.; one stepdaughter, Linda Stiles of Washington, D.C.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A celebration of his life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m., at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater. Vernon Christensen Vernon Robert Christensen, 81, a resident of Chester for 11 years and previously of Ellicott City, died July 21 at Heritage Harbour Rehabilitation Center in Annapolis. Mr. Christensen was born June 17, 1927, in Arlington, S.D., to the late Robert and Julia Christensen. He graduated from Arlington High School and earned a bachelor's degree in marketing from South Dakota State University. His career began with Western Auto Supply Co. in retail management and then real estate management. He later worked for various automotive companies in the Baltimore area. He served as a counter intelligence agent in the Army during the Korean War. He was a member of Galilee Lutheran Church, where he enjoyed volunteering, and the American Legion of Chester. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and was an avid baseball and football fan. Survivors include his former wife, Connie Christensen of Fair Haven; one son, Martin Christensen of Baltimore; three daughters, Karen Fenaroli of Leawood, Kan., Kay Wells of Boston, Mass., and Gail Pat-naude of Ellicott City; and seven grandchildren. Family and friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 106 Shamrock Road in Chester. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Galilee Lutheran Church, 1934 Harbor Drive in Chester. Interment will follow in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville. Rosemary D'Angelo Rosemary B. D'Angelo, 87, a seven-year resident of Edgewater and formerly of Jupiter, Fla., died of natural causes July 22 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Mrs. D'Angelo was born Dec. 7, 1920, in New York City. She was a bookkeeper for many years with NCCI Insurance. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Davidsonville. She loved golf, bingo and being with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Edward D'Angelo; and one son, Andrew J. D'Angelo. Survivors include one son, Thomas E. D'Angelo of Edgewater; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. A celebration of her life will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater. Interment will be held at a later date in Jupiter. Dale Dunlap, 84, a resident of Annapolis since 1946, died July 20 at Ginger Cove Health Care Center. Mr. Dunlap was born June 30, 1923, in Cadiz, Ohio. He attended Northwestern State College in Louisiana. He served in the Navy during World War II, attending pre-flight school at the University of Georgia and flight school at the Naval Air Station in Memphis, Tenn. During his Navy duty, he served under Capt. P.V.H. Weems. Later, he joined Capt. Weems in commercial firms for 30 years; first at Weems System of Navigation, Inc. in Annapolis, and then at Aeronautical Services in Washington, D.C. He was president of Weems and Plath, Inc. of Annapolis for many years, and later of Dunlap Enterprises, Inc. He also served as project manager on several consulting contracts for the Coast Guard and the National Geographic Society. Mr. Dunlap authored five books and 25 articles on air and marine navigation and co-authored the 12th edition of ''Dutton's Navigation and Piloting,'' the marine navigation textbook used at the Naval Academy. He was a longtime member of the Institute of Navigation and served as eastern regional vice president for several terms. He served as a deacon and on many committees at Heritage Baptist Church, where he taught adult Bible classes for 37 years and led various study programs. Survivors include his wife. Dorothy Dunlap; two sons, George Rion Dunlap of Ellicott City and Frank Harrison Dunlap of Augusta, Maine; one sister, Thelma Berlin of Scottsdale, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Family and friends may visit from 5:30 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Heritage Baptist Church, 1740 Forest Drive. Nathaniel Bruce Everett, 72, of Gambrills died July 6 at Loch Raven Veterans Rehabilitation Center after a long illness. Mr. Everett was born June 17, 1936, in Lynchburg, Va., to the late Samuel and Page Everett. He graduated from Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School, Bowie State College and the University of Maryland. He served in the Army for over 20 years, receiving several awards and medals. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Carol and William Everett; and one sister, Esther Collins. Survivors include his wife, Beulah Everett; two brothers, Alvin and Eugene Everett; and one sister, Patricia Jordan. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cecil Memorial United Methodist Church, 15 Parole St. in Annapolis. Richard Hirschauer Richard Lee Hirschauer, 55, of Centreville died July 21 at the Shock-Trauma Center at University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore. Mr. Hirschauer was born Sept. 5, 1952, in Annapolis to the late Russell Hirschauer and Lily Kenny. He graduated from Queen Anne's County High School. He enjoyed golf and was an animal lover; he and his wife fostered many animals. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell and Paul Hirschauer. Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Lynn Martin Hirschauer; one son, Michael Kern of Barclay in Queen Anne's County; two daughters, Micki Kern of Preston in Caroline County and Martine McGinty of Stevensville; one brother, James W. Hirschauer of Bishopville in Worcester County; one sister, Lynn Wisniewski of Pasadena; and one grandson. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Online condolences may be made at www.fhnfuenralhome.com. Irvin Smith Irvin Smith, 86, of Crownsville died of Alzheimer's disease July 16 at Fairfield Nursing Home after a long illness. Mr. Smith was born Sept. 6, 1921, in Annapolis. He served in the Navy for three years. Mr. Smith personally cut the trees for pilings for one of the piers at Smith's Boat Yard on the Severn River in Crownsville. He had the first self-propelled Travel-lift in Maryland, his family said. He later sold the yard to his oldest son. He enjoyed dancing and being the center of every party; he taught his children to pursue their dreams while respecting others, his family said, and was known for his smile and wit. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Irma Smith; four sons, Dave, Rick, Jeff and Ron Smith; three granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren. A celebration of his life will be held in early September. James Varipapa James C. Varipapa, 88, an eight-year resident of Edgewater and formerly of Oxon Hill for 40 years, died of natural causes July 20 in his home. Mr. Varipapa was born Aug. 27, 1919, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was a self-employed small businessman. He served as a corporal in the Army during World War II, serving in the Pacific and Europe. He fought in the Normandy Invasion - he was a third wave survivor - and in the Battle of the Bulge. He received the American Service Medal, the Asia-Pacific Service Medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge, the Europe-Africa-Middle East Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Edgewater, St. Columba Catholic Church in Oxon Hill and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Phyllis Varipapa; six sons, Robert Varipapa of Dover, Del., Charles Varipapa of Alexandria, Va., Jamie Varipapa of Ellicott City, Richard Varipapa of Davidsonville, Michael Varipapa of Long Beach, Calif., and James Cordiero of Seattle; one brother, Frankie Lowe of Marshalls Creek, Pa.; one sister, Eleanor V. Morales of Staten Island, N.Y.; and 12 grandchildren. A celebration of his life will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 515 Loch Haven Road in Edgewater. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Oct. 24 in the Arlington National Cemetery Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Varipapa's name to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 515 Loch Haven Road, Edgewater, MD 21037. |
