Today's obituaries recognize: Delano Dunbar, Kathleen Johnson, Donald Judy, Alice Kavetsky, Elmer Moreland Sr., Ellen Rafterry, Clarence Roup and Charles Stockton Sr.

Delano Dunbar

Delano S. Dunbar, 53, a long-time resident of Annapolis, died July 23 in his home.

Mr. Dunbar was born Jan. 31, 1958, in Liberia, West Africa, to the late Gertrude Mason Wesley and Tilman Dunbar.

He enjoyed cooking, listening to gospel music, watching football, soccer, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his companion, Francine Sellman; two daughters, Sonya Lawson of Flint, Mich., and another daughter of Liberia; one brother, Daniel Dunbar of Glen Burnie; two sisters, Agnes Peabody of Benton Harbor, Mich., and Miata Aytch of Millersville; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Reese and Sons Mortuary, 821 West St.


Kathleen Johnson

Kathleen Anne Collins Johnson, 76, of Salisbury and previously of Anne Arundel County, died July 28 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury after an injury and brief illness.

Mrs. Johnson was born June 2, 1932, in Washington, D. C., to the late Jack McRae and Helen Nicholson Collins. She graduated from Mt. Rainier High School in 1950. She lived in Cape St. Claire for over 10 years, and in Stevensville for almost 30 years.

She enjoyed camping and traveling with her family, and visited 47 states.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Jack McRae Collins; and one sister, Patricia H. Feltner.

Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Delmar Dean Johnson; two sons, Richard Francis Johnson of Anchorage, Alaska, and David Michael Johnson of Chester; three daughters, Karen Elizabeth Greer of Laurel, Del., Sheryl Lynn Johnson of Salisbury and Christine Marie Helmeczi of New Freedom, Pa.; ten grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 106 Shamrock Road in Chester. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Aug. 21 in Arlington National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 7023, Merrifield, VA 22116 - 7023.

Donald Judy

Donald R. Judy, 74, of Edgewater died July 24 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Mr. Judy was born Dec. 22, 1933, in Greenbrier County, W.Va., to the late Pearl Lee and Ada Pearl Walton Judy.

He was a self-employed drywall finisher.

Mr. Judy served in the Army from 1956 to 1958, and was honorably discharged.

Survivors include one son, Dwayne Judy of Brighton, Tenn.; one daughter, Darlene M. Skelton of Coker, Ala.; two brothers, Charles Judy of Crownsville and Dennis Judy of Cape St. Claire; one sister, Kathleen Dull of Millsboro, Del.; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services and interment will be private. Arrangements are by Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Cremation and Funeral Care.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Alice Kavetsky

Alice Kavetsky, 80, of Catonsville and previously of Odenton for 25 years, died July 29 at the Charlestown Retirement Community.

Mrs. Kavetsky was born April 27, 1928, in Sebastopol, Pa., to the late Anna and Frank Remas.

She was a military wife and homemaker, raising five children during her husband's Army career.

She enjoyed knitting, making afghans for all family members, dining out, and playing cards and was an active volunteer at both DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, and St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Later she became a voracious reader and was a doting grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, retired Army Sgt. Maj. John Kavetsky; and one son, John Kavetsky.

Survivors include one son, Robert Kavetsky of Gambrills; three daughters, Mary Golden of Clarksville in Howard County, Alice Kavetsky of Chester and Kathy Plitt of Crofton; one sister, Josephine Remas of Catonsville; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Family and friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Hardesty Funeral Home, 851 Annapolis Road in Gambrills.

A funeral Mass will be offered at 9 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church, 711 Maiden Choice Lane in Catonsville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church, 711 Maiden Choice Lane, Catonsville, MD 21228.


Elmer Moreland Sr.

Elmer A. Moreland Sr., 73, of Lothian died of pneumonia July 25 at Southern Maryland Hospital Center in Clinton after a long illness with throat cancer.

Mr. Moreland was born Feb. 26, 1935, in Largo to the late Mildred Frances Smith and Elmer Moreland Sr. He was raised in Mitchellville and attended the former Frederick Sasscer High School in Upper Marlboro.

He worked as acarpenter as a young man, and made his living as a lumber salesman and buyer throughout Maryland, Virginia, the Carolina's and Texas.

He enjoyed people, and visited friends and acquaintances in nursing homes, bringing fruit and candy during the Christmas season.

He was preceded in death by one son, Joseph Edward Moreland Sr.; one brother, James "Jimmy" Moreland; and two sisters, Delores Di'Augustino and Alice Richards.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Fowler Moreland; one son, Elmer "Billy" Moreland III of Lothian; one daughter, Mildred Jenny Smith of Lothian; three brothers, Charles "Sonny" Duvall of Croom, George Moreland of Edgewater, and John Moreland of Upper Marlboro; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Rausch Funeral Home, 8325 Mt. Harmony Lane in Owings.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home. Interment will be in Southern Memorial Gardens in Dunkirk.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Anne Arundel County Unit, 1041 Route 3 N., Gambrills, MD 21054.


Ellen Rafterry

Ellen Marie Mulder Rafterry, 75, of Churchton died of cancer July 26 at Aurora Medical Center in Oshkosh, Wis., after a brief illness.

Mrs. Rafterry was born April 10, 1933, in Sheboygan County, Wis., to the late James and Mary Carman Mulder. She lived in the same house for 55 years.

She was a member of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church of Deale, where she enjoyed serving in the nursery and making soup with the church ladies.

She was also an avid bowler, bowling each week for more than 40 years, and enjoyed crabbing in the Chesapeake Bay or bicyclingaround Cape Anne. She loved traveling with her friends and visiting her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Patrick Rafterry.

Survivors include five daughters, Jeannette Rafterry of Baltimore, Sheila Willert of Oshkosh, Monica Goforth of Southport, N.C., and Nancy Buckler and Jacqueline Rafterry of Bowie; three brothers; three sisters; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Aug. 9 at the Pavilion in Cape Anne, 1110 Blossom Parkway in Churchton. Arrangements are by Konrad-Behlman Funeral Homes and Crematory.

Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the American Cancer Society, 1041 Route 3 N., Building 1A, Gambrills, MD 21054.


Clarence Roup

Retired Army Sgt. Maj. Clarence James Roup, 66, of Bowie died of complications following surgery for esophageal cancer July 26 at the Washington, D.C., Hospital Center.

Sgt. Maj. Roup was born March 10, 1942, in Bay City, Mich., to Clarence B. Roup and the late Frances Roup. He attended Lutheran School, Bay City High School and Southern Illinois University.

He entered the Army in 1960, and served in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968 as a medic on an infantry reconnaissance team. He became a licensed practical nurse in 1969, and served in Army hospitals worldwide in patient care activities, finishing as an assistant inspector general at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., until his retirement from the military in 1988.

As a civilian, he worked as an inspector for the Inspector General's Office of the Department of Defense and later of the Department of Transportation from 1988 until his retirement in 2002.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Irene Cianek.

Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Brenda Jacobs Roup; two sons, Clarence James Roup Jr. and Charles Kevin Roup; two brothers, Ronald and Brad Roup; one sister, Judith Brooks; and two grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow and 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Beall Funeral Home, 6512 N.W. Crain Highway in Bowie.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, and interment will be at 2 p.m. Aug. 12 in Arlington National Cemetery. Those attending should arrive at the Administration Building no later than 1:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1041 Route 3 N., Building A, Gambrills, MD 21054.


Charles Stockton Sr.

Charles Herbert Stockton Sr., 78, a resident of Shady Side for 20 years and previously of Washington, D.C., died of a heart attack July 25 in Williamsburg, Va.

Mr. Stockton was born Dec. 9, 1929, in Washington, D.C.

Family and friends may visit at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 101 Owensville Road in West River.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the church. Arrangements are by Beall Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church, 101 Owensville Road, West River, MD 20778.
