Friday's obituaries recognize: James Allison Sr., Alice Berry, Ariel Chedester, Patricia Harrington, Vincenzo Pasqualucci and Robert Vass

James Allison Sr. 

James T. "Jim" Allison Sr., 79, a resident of Annapolis for 48 years and previously of New England, died of natural causes July 31 in his home.

Mr. Allison was born April 26, 1929, in Wakefield, R.I. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Miami and attended graduate school at the University of Connecticut.

He worked as a marine biologist with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources from 1960 to 1994.

Mr. Allison served in the Coast Guard from 1951 to 1953 on the Unimack.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Annapolis, where he served as a deacon and youth adviser.

He enjoyed fishing, boating and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of over 50 years, Meredith H. Allison; two sons, James T. Allison Jr. of Severna Park and Mark S. Allison of Cape St. Claire; one daughter, Cheryl L. McNerney of Severna Park; two sisters, Nancy Robinson of Block Island, R.I., and Constance Allison of Cranston, R.I.; and five grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church of Annapolis, 171 Duke of Gloucester St.

Interment will be at 10:45 a.m. Monday in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.

Alice Berry

Alice Mary Masters Berry, 92,a resident of Annapolis since 1999, died July 29 at Mandrin Chesapeake Hospice House.

Mrs. Berry was born March 19, 1916, in Vermont to the late LeRoy andMargaret Leonard Masters.She graduated from Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1937.

She was a licensed nurse in New Jersey, New York and New Hampshire, and helped her husband run a real estate and insurance business in Union, N.J.

She was devoted to volunteer work, serving various organizations and working on food, clothing and fundraising drives. She worked to bring federally supported senior housing to her area and was the first official social service coordinator for New Jersey senior housing.

She was a member of Weems Creek Baptist Church.She enjoyed putting on talent shows and entertaining, gardens and flowers, and had a collection of antiques and dishes.

She was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Charles Van Orden; and one grandson.

Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Mieth of Massachusetts and Marilyn Thompson of Annapolis; and two granddaughters.

Family and friends may visit at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Weems Creek Baptist Church, 600 N Bestgate Road. A service will follow at noon, and a luncheon will be held after the service.

A second service and interment will be held in New Jersey. Arrangements are by Hardesty Funeral Home.

Ariel Chedester

Ariel Reidy "Airy" Chedester, 88, a resident of Annapolis for 42 years and previously of Adelphi, died of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease July 27 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after an illness lasting eight years.

Mrs. Chedester was born March 19, 1920, in Adams, N.D., and graduated from Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls, Minn.

She worked as an analyst in the general accounting office of the Department of Labor in Washington, D.C., from 1947 to 1966.

She enjoyed playing tennis when she was young. Later, she enjoyed sailing and reading.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Russell Reidy; and one sister, Lucille Cobb.

Survivors include her husband of over 50 years, Marvin E. Chedester.

Interment will be private in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville. Arrangements are by Hardesty Funeral Home.

Patricia Harrington

Patricia Ann "Pat" Harrington, 67, a 25-year resident of Crownsville, died July 27 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a five-week illness.

Mrs. Harrington was born Jan. 17, 1941, in Boston.

She retired in 2008 after many years of service for the Piney Orchard and Odenton elementary schools and was a retired crossing guard. She was also an Avon consultant and collector for 20 years.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and was very involved in church activities.

She enjoyed children and animals and supported many charities, including St. Jude's Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House.

Survivors include her husband of over 40 years, William Harrington; two sons, Keith Harrington of Crownsville and Jason Harrington of Brooklyn Park; one daughter, Julie Harrington of Brooklyn Park; and four grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be offered at 9 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 1283 Odenton Road in Odenton.

Vincenzo Pasqualucci

Vincenzo Pasqualucci, 87, a resident of Annapolis for 48 years, died of complications from a stroke July 31 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Mr. Pasqualucci was born April 26, 1921, in Casentino-Aquila, Italy.

He ran Vince's Barber Shop and was known as "Vince the Barber."

He served in the Italian Army, and was a member of the Order of the Sons of Italy 2225 and St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church.

He enjoyed hunting and dancing.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Emidio Pasqualucci, who died in 1969 in Vietnam while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, and Inico Pasqualucci; and two brothers, Alfredo and Emilio Pasqualucci.

Survivors include his former wife, Domenica Pasqualucci; two sons, Luciano Pasqualucci of Italy and Mauro Pasqualucci of Annapolis; three daughters, Vittoria Tripodi of Annapolis; Grazia Pasqualucci of Florida, and Letizia Pasqualucci of New York City; one sister, Giovannina Pasqualucci of Connecticut; and nine grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 109 Duke of Gloucester St. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Robert Vass

Robert F. Vass, 89, a resident of Warrenton, Va., for three years and previously of Annapolis and Forestville, died of congestive heart failure July 30 at Fairfax Hospital.

Mr. Vass was born June 27, 1919, in Washington, D.C.

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and in the Air Force doing the Korean War.

He retired as a supervisory systems analyst for the federal government in 1978 after 38 years of service.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He loved flying airplanes, playing golf and watching old movies and was an avid Redskins fan.

He was preceded in death in March by his wife of almost 58 years, Lorraine C. Vass; and one sister, Ellen Meyer.

Survivors include six sons, Robert S. Vass of Accokeek, John T. Vass of Sacramento, Calif., Michael J. Vass of Centreville, Va., Paul A. Vass of Woodbine, Joseph P. Vass of Stafford, Va., and Christopher F. Vass of Chesapeake Beach; four daughters, Theresa C. Montgomery and Catherine E. Vass of Tracys Landing, Margaret M. Conte of Warrenton, and Ann M. Vass of Lusby; four sisters, Mary Agnes Yake of Springfield, Ohio, Elizabeth Scorsune of Frederick, Rita Adams of Solomons Island and Alice Viverette of Selbyville, Del.; 25 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Monday at Mt. Calvary Catholic Church, 6700 Marlboro Pike in Forestville. Interment will be at 1 p.m. Aug. 8 in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham.
