Monday's obituaries recognize: Alice Chaney, Louis Kurs, Walter Myers and Joseph Selig Alice Chaney Alice Marie Chaney, 81, of North Beach died Aug. 15 at Calvert Memorial Hospital in Prince Frederick. Mrs. Chaney was born Aug. 20, 1926, in Upper Marlboro to the late James Irving and Margaret Tayman Smith, and attended school in Upper Marlboro. She lived in Mount Ranier for many years before moving to the North Beach Senior Center four years ago. She was a member of North Beach Union Church and the 55 Friends, a senior ministry at Friendship Community Baptist Church. She enjoyed reading the Bible, walking the North Beach Boardwalk, spending time with her grandchildren, and solving word search puzzles. She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 50 years, Louis H. Chaney Jr. Survivors include two sons, William J. "Bill" Smith of Millersville and Louis H. Chaney III of Lothian; one daughter, Darlene Smith of Upper Marlboro; one brother, Joseph Smith of Edgewater; three sisters, Rose Aldridge of Summerville, S.C., Agnes Storms of Tucson, Ariz., and Mary Orsini of Crofton; five grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. Family and friends may visit from 11:30 a.m. until the funeral begins at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow at Rausch Funeral Home, 3825 Mount Harmony Lane in Owings. Interment will follow in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham. Louis Kurs Louis Nathan Kurs, 83, a resident of Annapolis since 1964, died Aug. 22 in his home after a long illness. Mr. Kurs was born Dec. 22, 1924, in Manhattan, N.Y., and graduated from Stuyvesant High School, the Colorado School of Mines and Columbia University and earned a master's degree in geology from the University of Chicago in 1948. He taught physical science and geology at the University of Chicago, Wright Junior College and the University of Illinois, was a researcher at the Argonne National Laboratories, and joined the faculty at St. John's College in Annapolis in 1964. He was a guest lecturer at the University of Arizona and continued occasionally to teach graduate courses after he retired in 1992. He loved travel, especially to the Southwest. He also visited Germany and Italy during his retirement. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Alice Kurs; four daughters, Claire Kurs of Silver Spring, Jean Blair of Glendale, Ariz., Eleanor Verdi of Annapolis and Elizabeth Soeder of Munich, Germany; six grandsons; and one great-granddaughter. A memorial gathering will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave. Interment will be private. Walter Myers Walter Herman "Wally" Myers, 59, of Denton in Caroline County and previously a long-time resident of Annapolis, died of heart disease Aug. 21 in his home after a five-year illness. Mr. Myers was born Nov. 18, 1948, in Annapolis and attended Oakwood Elementary and Annapolis High Schools. He worked for the Henry B. Myers Co. in Annapolis from 1966 to 1981, then as a mechanic from 1998 until 2008. He was a volunteer with the West Annapolis Volunteer Fire Compoany for 25 years, and was a member of Magothy United Methodist Church for the Deaf and the Eastern Shore Association for the Deaf. He loved working on engines and motors and tools of all kinds. He was preceded in death by one brother, Barry Allen Myers. Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Linda Kathryn Myers; two sons, John W. Myers of Wilmington, Del., and Jason R. Myers of Denton; one daughter, Jeni Sue Myers of Westerville, Ohio; and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave. Interment will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Selig, 74, a resident of Odenton for nine years, died Aug. 22 at the Tate Hospice House in Linthicum. Mr. Selig was born Feb. 19, 1934, in Maryland to the late August and Magdalin Selig. He graduated from City College high school in Baltimore in 1953 and earned a degree in electrical engineering from Johns Hopkins University in 1967. He was an electrical engineer with the National Security Agency until he retired in 1993. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Odenton. Mr. Selig loved sailboats, fishing, trains, computers and the beach, and enjoyed working and doing things around the house. Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Katherine Selig; one daughter, Jacqueline Selig-Gumtow of Odenton; and two grandchildren. A funeral Mass was offered this morning at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery. Arrangements were by Donaldson Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401. |
