Monday's obituaries recognize: Charles Bove Jr., John Brokx, John Crandell, Marion Sawyer, Ronald Schultz and  Taylor Waltman

Charles Bove Jr.

Charles Joseph Bove Jr., 86, of Annapolis and Summerfield, Fla., died Sept. 5 at the Mandrin Hospice House in Harwood after a brief illness.

Dr. Bove was born Oct. 21, 1921, in Orange, N.J., to the late Charles and Mary C. Bove. He attended St. Mary's School and graduated from Annapolis High School in 1939 and the University of Maryland in 1946.

He was a doctor of dental surgery, and ran a private practice in Annapolis from 1946 to 1988.

Dr. Bove served as a private in the Army during World War II, and as a captain in the Air Force in the Korean war, from 1951 to 1954.

He was a past president of the county Dental Society and a life-member of the Maryland State and American Dental Associations and the Xi Psi Phi Dental Honor Society.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge 622, founded the Elks Lodge 2309 in Bowie, and was president of the Elks Lodge 2309 Building Corp. He was also a member of St. Mary's Church and Sacred Heart Church in Bowie, and a former member of the Sons of Italy,

He enjoyed woodworking, gourmet cooking, opera, fishing and traveling.

He was preceded in death by one son, Charles L. Bove.

Survivors include his wife of over 40 years, Barbara A. Bove; three sons, Stephen N. Bove of Crownsville, Thomas E. Bove of Leesburg, Va., and Anthony D. Bove of Grass Lake, Mich.; three daughters, Charlene L. Eyster of Annapolis, Mary Jo Stover of Edgewater and Gail E. Fritsch of Crofton; one sister, Josephine L. Bembe of Annapolis; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 N. Bestgate Road. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401.

John Brokx

John P.E. Brokx, Sr., 80, of Severna Park, died of complications due to Alzheimer's disease Sept. 5 at Heartlands Assisted Living in Severna Park.

Mr. Brokx was born Jan. 9, 1928, in New York City, and graduated from high school in 1946 in Wappingers Falls, N.Y. He attended Albany Business College and Sienna College and graduated from the University of Houston.

In 1993, he retired from the Nevamar Corp. as an internal auditor after 28 years.

Mr. Brokx served in the Marine Corps.

He was active in the Boy Scouts, community and church associations and his daughter's gymnastics team. He was inducted into the Old Mill High School Hall of Fame for 25 years of service as treasurer of the Boosters Club, and volunteered with Nevamar, Westinghouse, and Tower Federal credit unions.

He enjoyed golf, antique hunting with his wife, and collecting coins and miniature soldiers.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Anita Dahlem; one son, John Brokx Jr. of Perris, Calif.; two daughters, Michele Mixson of Miami, Fla., and Suzanne McGarity of Severna Park; and four grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Our Lady of the Fields Catholic Church, 1070 Cecil Ave. in Millersville. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

John Crandell

John Howard Crandell, 60, a resident of Gambrills for 10 years and previously of Bowie, died of heart complications Sept. 4 in his home after a year-long illness.

Mr. Crandell was born April 25, 1948, in Ossining, N.Y., to the late Marjorie Thompson and Melvin Crandell, and attended the University of Hartford.

He was the director of personnel security for the federal government.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Crofton, where he served as church moderator and with the administrative group. He also served as president and vice-president of the board of directors for Belair Swim and Racquet Club.

He enjoyed James Bond movies and current events.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sheryl Willis Crandell.

Survivors include his wife of 10 years, Joanne Crandell; three sons, Darren Crandell of Gaithersburg, Luke Crandell of Annapolis and Ry D'Antonio of Baltimore; two daughters, Tiffany Anne Lane of Irvine, Calif., and Britt D'Antonio of Gambrills; one brother, Melvin Crandell of New York; and two sisters, Carolyn Edmonds of New Jersey and Arlene Coy of Connecticut.

Family and friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Beall Funeral Home, 6512 N.W. Crain Highway in Bowie.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Crofton, 1690 Crofton Parkway.

Interment will be in Lakemont Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Marion Sawyer

Marion Kay Sawyer, 74, of Crofton died Sept. 5 at Crofton Care and Rehabilitation Center.

Ms. Sawyer was born Feb. 5, 1934, in Philadelphia to the late George and Marion Allebach. She graduated from Northwestern High School in 1951.

She worked for the American Red Cross, and at Giant Food for 17 years.

She enjoyed bowling and watching sports. She was a fan of the Washington Redskins and loved Tiger Woods.

Survivors include one son, Randall Sawyer of Gambrills; two brothers, Raymond Allebach of Jacksonville, Fla., and George Allebach of Davidsonville; one sister, Jane A. Seibert of Onancock, Va.; and one grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. tomorrow at Donaldson Funeral Home and Crematory, 1411 Annapolis Road in Odenton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, Central Maryland Chapter, 4800 Mt. Hope Drive, Baltimore, MD 21215.

Ronald Schultz

Ronald R. "Pops" Schultz, 73, of Heritage Harbour in Annapolis and previously of Lanham for 25 years, died of cancer Sept. 4 in his home after in illness lasting three years.

Mr. Schultz was born Nov. 9, 1934, in Scranton, Pa., to the late Rudolph and Sophie Schultz. He graduated from Central High School in Scranton and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland and a master's degree from Bowie State University.

He retired from the Army as a special agent for Army Intelligence, CIC - Counterintelligence Corps.

He worked as an adjuster for Nationwide Insurance Co., and later owned a private investigation business.

He was a member of American Legion Post 7 in Crownsville, St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Council 1384, Disabled American Veterans, and the National Counterintelligence Corps Association.

He enjoyed watching the Military Channel, the Washington Redskins and Baltimore Orioles, collecting coins, stamps and military memorabilia, reading philosophy and religion, square dancing and country music, and his family.

Survivors include his wife of over 50 years, Shirley Schultz; one son, Ronald Schultz Jr. of Waldorf; two daughters, Susan Waters of Annapolis and Kimberly Lavinder of Bowie; one brother, Ernie Schultz of Milwaukee, Pa.; and five grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be offered at 1 p.m. Friday at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 N. Bestgate Road. Internment will be private in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville. Arrangements are by Kalas Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401; or to St. Mary's Renewing the Light Campaign, 113 Duke of Gloucester St., Annapolis, MD 21401.

Taylor Waltman

Taylor Amanda Waltman, 12, a life-long resident of Pasadena, died Sept. 4 at Johns Hopkins Hospital after collapsing during youth soccer practice the day before. A complete story appeared in The Sunday Capital.

Taylor was born Sept. 14, 1995, to Donald David and Kimberly A. Waltman of Pasadena, and was an eighth-grader at Chesapeake Bay Middle School.

She was a member of Galilee Lutheran Church, where she attended Sunday School, played with the Church Mountain Road Soccer League and volunteered for Vacation Bible School.

She enjoyed playing soccer, spending time with her friends, shopping, camping, crabbing, swimming and her dog. She was a Ravens fan and loved the color pink.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Judith A. and Stanley J. "Ben" Binkowski.

Survivors include one sister, Shelby A. Waltman of Pasadena; her grandparents, Delores Ann and Donald Joseph Waltman Jr. of Severna Park; and her great-grandmother, Orma K. Tolley of Pasadena.

Family and friends may visit from 3:30 to 8 p.m. today at McCully-Polyniak Funeral Home, 3204 Mountain Road in Pasadena.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Galilee Lutheran Church, 4652 Mountain Road in Pasadena. Interment follow in Meadowridge Memorial Park.
