Wednesday's obituaries recognize: William Ball, Maude Chase, Richard Mawhorr, Doris Moreland and Gordon Young Jr.

William Ball 

William "Bill" Ball, 78, of Severna Park died of natural causes Sept. 8 at Genesis ElderCare in Severna Park.

Mr. Ball was born in 1930 in Westchester, N.Y., and attended the State University of New York at Delhi.

Mr. Ball retired from Verizon after over 40 years of service.

He served in the Navy during the Korean War.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the United Methodist Church in Shrub Oak, N.Y., and Severna Park United Methodist Church.

He enjoyed bowling, boating, camping, and traveling with his family.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Lee H. Ball Jr.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Ruth Hauck Ball; two daughters, Heather Briganti of Severna Park and Deborah Lawrence of Hyattsville; his twin brother, Harry Ball of Tucson, Ariz.; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Severna Park United Methodist Church, 731 Benfield Road. Arrangements are by Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home.

Maude Chase

Maude Virginia "Nana" Wilson Chase, 83, a life-long resident of Annapolis, died of natural causes Sept. 7 in her home.

Mrs. Chase was born Jan. 9, 1925, in Annapolis to the late Daisy Lane Brown and Dennis Wilson, and attended the former Stanton School.

She worked in janitorial services for Anne Arundel Medical Center, and was a homemaker.

She attended Asbury United Methodist Church and the Second Baptist Church.

She enjoyed reading the Bible, family gatherings and attending Gospel singings.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Louis W. Alton Sr.; and her second husband, William A. Chase Jr.

Survivors include four sons, Louis Alton Jr. and Alexander Chase of Annapolis, David Alton of Clinton and Dermot Chase of Brooklyn Park; two daughters, Brenda E. Baker of District Heights and Jennifer Alton White of Annapolis; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 4 to 7 p.m. tomorrow at Reese and Sons Mortuary, 821 West St.

A Christian wake will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Second Baptist Church, 1808 Poplar Ave., and a funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.

Richard Mawhorr

Richard E. "Dick" Mawhorr, 61, a resident of Arnold for 33 years, died unexpectedly Sept. 9 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Mr. Mawhorr was born Feb. 27, 1947, in Ashland, Ohio, to the late Kenneth and Florence Mawhorr, and graduated from Madison High School in Mansfield Ohio. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland and graduated from the FBI National Academy.

He retired as a lieutenant from the U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division after 20 years of service, and worked as a fraud investigator for Nationwide and Geico Insurance companies.

He served in the Air Force Military Police during the Vietnam War.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, his golden retriever and the beach.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Sandy Nicita.

Survivors include his wife of almost 40 years, Rosemary Mawhorr; one son, Tommy Mawhorr of Shreveport, La.; one daughter, Erika Mawhorr Bisesi of Severna Park; one sister, Donna McNeely of Mansfield; and four grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.

Doris Moreland

Doris K. Peddicord Moreland, 84, a resident of Crownsville for 49 years and previously of Annapolis for 25 years, died of congestive heart failure Sept. 9 at Gilchrist Hospice Center in Towson after a year-long illness.

Mrs. Moreland was born Feb. 28, 1924, in Annapolis and attended St. Mary's School.

She worked as a meat wrapper at the A & P in Annapolis, and also worked at the Family Shoe Store.

She was a member of the Elks Lodge in Annapolis and St. Mary's Catholic Church.

She enjoyed reading, bowling, crocheting, baking and decorating cakes.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred "Johnny" Moreland; four brothers, Claude, Bobby, Ray and Joseph "Bussy" Peddicord; and four sisters, Louise "Buck" Turner, Evelyn A. Ohnstad, Agnes Byles and Roberta Clow.

Survivors include one son, John Moreland of California; two daughters, Connie Asher of Ellicott City and Joyce Adams of Annapolis; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Hardesty Funeral Home, 851 Annapolis Road in Gambrills. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, and interment will be in Glen Haven Cemetery.

Gordon Young Jr.

Gordon Anthony Young Jr., 74, a longtime resident of Annapolis, died Sept. 6 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center after a long illness.

Mr. Young was born May 14, 1934, in Washington, D.C., to the late Mildred and Gordon A. Young Sr. He studied English at Howard University.

He was a certified public purchasing officer, and over the course of his 50-year careerworked for the State Department, Provident Hospital, the City of Annapolis, Anne Arundel County and Radio Shack.

He served as a sergeant in the National Guard from 1969 to 1977.

He was a member of Fowler United Methodist Church, where he served as president of the men's group and choir, as well as serving in the finance office and as sexton.

His citizen awards included the Governor's Citation for Outstanding Citizen Service in 2002 and the Outstanding Father of the Year award from Frontiers International.

He was an avid sports fan, especially of the Washington Redskins.

He was preceded in death by one son, Anthony Verner; and one sister, Karen Rouse.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Tigs-Young; five sons, Army Sgt. Maj. Dwayne A. Tigs of Germany, Darryl Tigs of Texas, Derick Tigs of Tennessee, Dewitt Tigs of California and Demond Tigs of Maryland; two daughters, Alesia Young of Virginia and Ivette Tigs of Iowa; and 12 grandchildren.

A Christian wake will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m., at Fowler Untied Methodist Church, 816 Bestgate Road. Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary.
