Friday's obituaries recognizes: Jacob Alderton Jr., Kathleen Garner, Barbara Hawthorne, Thomas Hudgins and Merle Scott Jacob Alderton Jr. Jacob E. "Jake" Alderton Jr., 68, of Trappe and previously of Ridgely, died of natural causes Sept. 23 in his home. Mr. Alderton was born June 25, 1940, in Baltimore and was raised in Severna Park. He was the vice president of quality for a defense contractor. Mr. Alderton was a former member of the Severna Park Elks. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, and enjoyed boating, fishing, gardening and riding his motorcycle. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Kristen R. Alderton. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, LouAnn Reimer Alderton; three daughters, Debra L. Latham of Grasonville, Lois L. Alderton of Stevensville and Kelly L. Rush of Trappe; one sister, Joan Owens of Vienna, Va.; and six grandchildren. Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Interment will be private. Kathleen Garner Kathleen B. Garner, 96, of Cumberland for over 75 years, died of natural causes Sept. 23 at Millennium Health and Rehabilitation Center at Marley Neck. Mrs. Garner was born Nov. 4, 1911, in West Virginia. She was a textile worker for Celanese Fibers for 25 years. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Cumberland. She enjoyed fishing, hiking, outdoor activities, crocheting, cooking and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilmer Brown. Survivors include one daughter, Rosalie A. Jones of Arnold; two grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. Funeral services and interment are private. Online condolences may be made at www.barrancofuneralhome.com. Barbara Hawthorne Barbara L. Hawthorne, 55, of Crofton died suddenly Sept. 21 in her home after a short illness. Mrs. Hawthorne was born April 26, 1953, in Rome, N.Y., to William and Jane Pugh Angell. She worked as a tax preparer at the Odenton H&R Block office and was previously an accountant for Holiday Inns in New Jersey for many years. She enjoyed traveling in the United States, Sudoku, country music, Renaissance festivals, cats and nature. Survivors include her husband, William Hawthorne; two stepsons, William and Benjamin Hawthorn; one stepdaughter, Elizabeth Braughton; and two sisters, Kit Angell of Silver Spring and Vera Angell of Albany, Maine. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 4 at Nichols-Bethel United Methodist Church, 1239 Murray Road in Odenton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the SPCA, 1815 Bay Bridge Ave., Annapolis, MD 21403. Thomas Hudgins Thomas Earl Hudgins, 47, a resident of Severna Park for 25 years, died of cancer Sept. 24 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a brief illness. Mr. Hudgins was born Nov. 21, 1960, in Cheverly to Lucia G. and Edward Lee Hudgins Jr. of Bowie. He worked as a mechanic for Interstate Brands. A member of the Southern Maryland MOPAR Club, Mr. Hudgins enjoyed working on his own MOPAR car. He also was a member of the Men's League Golf Club at Compass Pointe Golf Courses. He was a Redskins fan who enjoyed golf, fishing and grilling on the barbecue. Survivors include two daughters, Jessica Lee Hudgins of Odenton and Samantha Morgan Hudgins of Pasadena; four brothers, Edward Lee Hudgins III of Cottage City, William Anthony Hudgins Sr. of Glen Burnie, M. David Hudgins of Finksburg and John Matthew Hudgins of Laurel; one sister, Joan Maria Hudgins of Laurel; one granddaughter; and his former wife, Gail Helm of Pasadena. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. tomorrow at Faith Baptist Church, 7378 Furnace Branch Road in Glen Burnie. Arrangements are by Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home. Merle Scott Merle Ingham Scott, 88, of Salisbury, N.C., and formerly of Annapolis, died of pneumonia Sept. 24 at Genesis Eldercare-Salisbury Center. Mrs. Scott was born Jan. 27, 1920, in Tacoma, Wash., to the late James and Erma Ingham. She graduated from Horace Mann High School and Skidmore College in New York. She and her husband were longtime members of the Annapolis Yacht Club. In her youth, she won numerous trophies in both tennis and diving. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, C. Gaither Scott, who died in 2000. Survivors include two sons, James D. and Charles G. Scott Jr. of Annapolis; one daughter, Catherine Scott Richardson of Skidmore; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
