Monday's obituaries recognize: Michael Bat, Barton Butler, David Chinn Sr., Phillip Dupy, Bernard Ringgold and Edith Thommen

Michael Bat

Michael Bat, 84, of Severna Park for 38 years, died of natural causes Sept. 27 in his home.

Mr. Bat was born Nov. 22, 1923, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia.

He retired as a logistics manager for Raytheon Co.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Severna Park.

Mr. Bat traveled extensively with his wife throughout his military and civilian career, and loved fishing and gardening.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances Bat.

Survivors include one son, Michael A. Bat of Germantown; one daughter, Deborah Ann Clancy of Finksburg; and one sister, Olga Stefanick of Launga Woods, Calif.

Family and friends may visit from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. tomorrow St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 689 Ritchie Highway in Severna Park. Interment will be in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.

Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the American Lung Association, Executive Plaza 1, Suite 600, 11350 McCormick Road, Hunt Valley, MD 21031.

Barton Butler

H. Barton Butler, 83, of Centreville and formerly of Hillsboro, died Sept. 27 at the William Hill Manor in Easton.

Mr. Butler was born June 13, 1923, in Denton and graduated from Caroline High School in 1942.

He co-owned and operated Fleming's Esso on Rout 404 in Hillsboro, and retired in 1991 as owner and operator of the Tri-County Tire Shop in Queen Anne. He also drove a Caroline County school bus from 1966 until 1977.

He served in the Army Air Corps and became a Bombardier in 1945; he was released from active duty in 1946, but was recalled for the Korean War in 1951.

He was a member of the Temple Lodge 128 AF and AM in Denton, and was a member of the Centreville United Methodist Church and formerly of Hillsboro-Queen Anne United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Butler.

Survivors include two daughters, Cherie F. Hollingsworth of Centreville and Jane B. Wilson of Annapolis; and three grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Moore Funeral Home, 12 S. Second St. in Denton; a Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Hillsboro-Queen Anne United Methodist Church on Main St. in Hillsboro. Interment will be in Greenmount Cemetery in Hillsboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hillsboro-Queen Anne United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 267, Hillsboro, MD 21641 or to the Centreville United Methodist Church, 608 Church Hill Road, Centreville, MD 21617.

David Chinn Sr.

David Francis Chinn Sr., 74, of Annapolis died Sept. 24 at Berkeley Springs Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in West Virginia.

Mr. Chinn was born July 24, 1934, in Detroit, Mich., to the late Frank Hosking and Mary Elizabeth Butterfield Chinn.

He was preceded in death by one son, Frank E. Chinn; and one grandson.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Mary Baker Chinn; one son, David Chinn II; five daughters, Victoria Bigelow, Edith Walker, Grace Wilson and Pamela and Mary Chinn; one brother, Richard T. Chinn; and 11 grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Connelly Funeral Home of Essex, 300 Mace Ave. in Baltimore. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the funeral home, and interment will be in Gardens of Faith Memorial Gardens.

Phillip Dupy

Phillip Daniel Dupy, 54, of Stevensville died Sept. 26 in his home after a long illness.

Mr. Dupy was born June 28, 1954, in Winfield, Kans., to Bonita A. Thornhill Dupy of Mt. Vernon, Texas and the late John Milton Dupy. He graduated from Star Spencer High School and a business college in Oklahoma.

He began his career in newspaper circulation and operations with The Daily Oklahoman, then worked for The Washington Post as circulation zone manager in Rockville and Potomac. After moving to Missouri, he continued to work for various newspapers until he retired.

Survivors include his wife, Rosemarie Patane Dupy; four sons, Christopher R. and Phillip J. Dupy of Gaithersburg, Joshua M. Dupy of Germantown and Zachariah W. Dupy of Frederick; one stepdaughter; one brother, James H. Dupy of Edmond, Okla.; two sisters, Sharon Selvy of Sierra Vista, Ariz., and Bonnie Jo Sturgeon of Mt. Pleasant, Texas; and three grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 106 Shamrock Road in Chester; a prayer service will follow at 8 p.m., and interment will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Philip Merrill Environmental Center, 6 Herndon Ave., Annapolis, MD 21403.

Bernard Ringgold

Bernard Winchester Ringgold, 92, of Stevensville died Sept. 28 at Corsica Hills in Centreville.

Mr. Ringgold was born May 1, 1916, in Stevensville to the late Samuel and Gladys White Ringgold; he was raised by his grandmother after his mother's death, and attended school in Chester.

Mr. Ringgold worked as a waterman, and helped build the first Chesapeake Bay Bridge. He later worked for Ed Cole as a pile driver, and in the 1960s worked for C.J. Langenfelter in Stevensville as a tugboat mate. Mr. Ringgold retired to take care of his wife.

He served in the Navy on the USS Westmoreland in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.

He enjoyed building Martin houses in his backyard, and was known as "The Bird Man of Love Point." He also enjoyed building and sailing ice boats when the Bay would freeze over.

He was preceded in death by his wife of over 60 years, Alice E.M. Walters Ringgold; and four brothers, Charles, Thomas, Robert and Roland Ringgold

Survivors include one son, John B. Ringgold of Chester; two daughters, Brenda A. Ruth of Grasonville and Gladys M. Lee of Chester; seven grandchildren; and 14 grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 106 Shamrock Road in Chester.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and interment will follow in the Stevensville Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Queen Anne's, Inc., 255 Comet Drive, Centreville, MD 21617.

Edith Thommen

Edith K. Thommen, 79, of Millersville and previously of Arnold, died of lung cancer Sept. 24 at Sunrise Assisted Living in Severna Park after a brief illness.

Mrs. Thommen was born Jan. 30, 1929, in Baltimore, and graduated from Southern High School in 1948.

She worked as a supervisor for the former Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. for 25 years before her retirement.

Mrs. Thommen enjoyed gardening, reading, playing cards and other games with friends, spending time with family, swimming, traveling and eating crabs.

Survivors include two sons, Bruce and Thomas Thommen of Millersville; one daughter, Barbara Graham of Lusby; one brother, Keith Metzler of Baltimore; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A memorial Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of the Fields Catholic Church, 1070 Cecil Ave. in Millersville.

Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401.
