Harvey Branston Burroughs Jr., 59, pleaded guilty Tuesday in District Court in Annapolis to threatening a state official, Circuit Court Judge Paul F. Harris Jr.

Burroughs called Harris' offices multiple times and left expletive-laced messages regarding the sentence the judge handed down in April to his brother, Dennis Ray Burroughs, according to the Anne Arundel County Sheriff's Office.

An Aug. 4 message specifically contained a threat on Harris'...

My husband is a police officer who regularly is threatened and has voice mails left that he and his family will be killed. Not one judge in Anne Arundel County acknowledges the work, time, county money or resources put into the all of the cases that they give little or no punishment.

The police officer will work 4 hours of overtime to get the person charged, booked and a report written only to have nothing happen to defendant.

I would never defend an individuals right to verbally threaten a Judge as they are of a status separate from us commoners. But I am curious as to the number of calls, and the initial contact date that led to the call (Aug. 4, containing a specific threat) that precipitated the 1st criminal complaint.
It would seem that intermediary motions could have been filed that would have both spared the threat to the Judge and alerted the wrong-doer to the severity of his acts.

Fitting punishment! - 2009-10-22 22:29:05

We can't have people making threats against those who have been given the responsibility of administering justice. The punishment for threatening them over someone else DOES need to be more severe! Imagine being a judge, imposing a sentence (that is determined by the legislature by the way)...and then having your life threatened just for doing your job! Our community cannot allow such behavior to go unpunished.

Because it affects the judge, he sentences him as should be. If it was anybody else, he would have walked away.
