Ernastine Fobbs, a spokeswoman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said officials served search warrants at two restaurants, one business office and several residences in Anne Arundel County late Thursday morning.
She would not say how many locations or what businesses or homes were raided, citing the ongoing investigation.
But county police said more than a dozen officers assisted ICE at Timbuktu Restaurant and Lounge at 1726 Dorsey Road in Hanover at about 10:30 a.m. Fobbs...

What it all boils down to.... - 2010-03-22 12:55:59
Literally is that The United Sates is about to become a thing of the past thats why I wrote my "Rome is Burning" thread.
Illegal Immigrants pour into this country everyday and nobody especially the government cares about what they do and how much they affect our economy especially the young people.
And now that We are about to Officially become a Socialist State I can't see things getting any better but frankly I don't care because I don't have a family so the Government can screw me over all they want. I'm 46 and I could care less.
God Bless America.
God Bless Our Troops.

How they live. - 2010-03-21 14:43:50
ICE also raided homes where the illegals were staying.
Here's what was found:
1738 Dorsey Road: untagged vehicle, junk and debris, illegal dwelling with no windows, sewage overflow, large amounts of garbage, garage used as a dwelling, rodent infestation.
1754 Dorsey Road: untagged vehicle, junk and debris, large amounts of garbage, two sheds in disrepair, rodent infestation.
1704 Dorsey Road: junk and debris, unsafe structure; an adjacent parcel was cited for junk and debris.
1726 Dorsey Road: untagged vehicle, junk and debris, illegal deck, unsafe structure with fire damage.
But some people insist they make our country better due to increased 'Diversity'.

Anyone who works for or supports any of these organizations please feel free to enlighten me.
Maybe at 46 I just never knew the meaning of the word.
I'd love to hear from you. Honestly.

The US does have an official language, but it's a de facto language not a de juris language.
Do we have Spanish language courts in this country? Do we print Spanish laws? No, of course not.
The reason that we don't have a law on the books is because nobody would've fathomed that so many people could come here and not learn the language.

I know this has been said before, but I'm going to say it again. The United States of America has no official language. The only reason we speak English is because of inertia. Additionally, the next time you want to quote a t-shirt to make a point about the English language, could you endeavor to use proper punctuation? Thank you.

You're right! Ignorance is all around us. Like the ignorance to assume that ALL ILLEGALS are the ones that snuck across the border that there is absolutely no paperwork for.
We're forgetting about the folks that ENTERED LEGALLY but over-stayed their Visas and are in effect, illegal. The crime all of these people have committed, is a CIVIL offense, not a CRIMINAL offense. Sadly, some have also committed other criminal offenses and they should be punished to the fullest extent.
Not every illegal immigrant is undocumented. Not every illegal is here to break laws and doesn't want to learn English. The economy is crap because of GREED. It's hard to be greedy making $8/hr picking melons in 100 degree temps, 12 hrs. a day.
Again...ignorance surrounds us.
PS. The term "anchor baby" is a derogatory name for someone who becomes a US citizen by virtue of being born within our borders.

But you see that's my point.
If ICE went to every soccer field in Anne Arundel County alone and picked people out at random to find out their residency status I don't think there would be a dozen people left on those fields.
I used this scenerio because I've seen it a million times with the guys drinking 40's in broad daylight (which is illegal) and the women with their children who obviously have to evacuate and there is only One Port-a-Potty.
I have even heard stories from my brother and co-workers of people just dropping trowel and cutting loose regardless of who is around and have even seen it myself in a laundramat.
Another thing is I know these people don't have permits because I've even spotted them using St. Marys High Schools' brand new athletic field and considering that you have to wear cleats to play soccer I can't imagine what they're doing to that georgeous field.

I hear ya...you have to start SOMEWHERE, but to say that our economy is crashing based on you witnessing 200-300 soccer players and their families at a recreational event is at the very least, ridiculous.
Not prosecuting/imposing huge fees on businesses who hire undocumented immigrants is the biggest problem. You go after the companies, they won't want to hire them.
By the way, in this county, you must have a permit to play on Rec & Parks fields. Should Rec & Parks send someone out each time they get complaints about 200-300 "possible illegals" playing soccer without a permit? Maybe. There's a job for a US Citizen! If they have a permit, was it given to them because they had proof of legal residency in the county, let alone, the US? Doubt it.
Go after the companies...then the jobs won't be so abundant.

200-300 strong on an average day at each field complete with uniforms and everything.
Playing soccer while their friends are drinking 40's in broad daylight and their wives and children watch as well using the One Port-A-Potty on the field.

Illegal Alien Voting Bill TODAY! - 2010-03-16 09:29:35
HOUSE BILL 1485 - VOTER REGISTRATION - INFORMATION ON NON-CITIZENS
Delegate Ron George (District 30, Annapolis) is sponsoring a bill that would require the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) to send to the Board of Elections a list of all non-citizens that are non-compliant with proof of lawful presence, as well as those non-citizens that are lawfully present and received a drivers license based on a work visa, green card, etc.
The Maryland State Board of Elections would then make sure that these individuals are not on the voter rolls and remove those that are.
The MVA started requiring proof of lawful presence for a drivers license on June 1st, 2009 in compliance with a new law originally sponsored by Delegate George and crossfiled by Senator Norman Stone.
Since June 2009 the MVA was still asking applicants if they wished to register to vote. "From June 2009, and as we move forward, the Board of Elections now has a list available through the MVA which can be used to decrease the chance of voter fraud," said Delegate George, "voting is a right of citizenship."
The bill is HB1485 and is being heard tomorrow, Tuesday, March 16th in the House Ways and Means Committee.
Sponsored By: Delegates George, Bartlett, Bates, Beidle, Beitzel, Bromwell, Dwyer, Eckardt, Elliott, Elmore, Frank, Haddaway, Jenkins, Kach, Kipke, Krebs, Mathias, McComas, McConkey, Miller, Minnick, Norman, O'Donnell, Olszewski, Schuh, Serafini, Shank, Shewell, Smigiel, Sophocleus, Sossi, Stocksdale, Stull, and Weir

I knew a man who was born and raised in East Lost Angeles who, while doing a favor for his cousin, got swept up in an immigration raid. He was deported to Mexico. Although of Mexican descent, he had never been beyond his American home and did not connect with his Mexican roots. After many misadventures in trying to sneak across the border, including the demonstration of his human side by giving a single mother the oranges that he was attempting to sell, he made it back to America...his home. Think about it.

On Sunday, March 21, amnesty supporters from across the country will convene in Washington, D.C. to DEMAND that the U.S. Congress pass legislation granting amnesty to the approximately 11 million illegal aliens currently residing in the United States. Billed the March for America, the event is being spearheaded by Reform Immigration for America, a coalition of individuals and grassroots organizations that support amnesty.

Unemployment - 2010-03-15 18:50:34
Seems to me that the still-high unemployment rate suggests quite a few legal citizens, especially young, less skilled and less educated people, or retirees, might be grateful to land some of the jobs currently occupied by illegals.
Amnesty for illegals makes about as much sense to me as pardons for undeniably guilty criminals.
Immigrants don't have a right to the "American Dream" by any means necessary, at the expense of native-born and previously naturalized citizens; and they certainly don't have the right to "milk" the system dry as many are doing.
And I agree that we need to make the punishment for employing illegals extreme and prohibitive.

Another example of illegals voting - 2010-03-15 16:55:55
In California, former Republican Rep. Robert K. Dornan was defeated by Democrat Loretta Sanchez by 984 votes in the 1996 election. State officials found that at least 300 votes were cast illegally by non-citizens.

Proof Illegal Aliens Vote - 2010-03-15 16:52:51
In 2005, the U.S. Government Accountability Office found that up to 3 percent of the 30,000 individuals called for jury duty from voter registration rolls over a two-year period in just one U.S. district court were NOT U.S. citizens. While that may not seem like many, just 3 percent of registered voters would have been more than enough to provide the winning presidential vote margin in Florida in 2000. Indeed, the Census Bureau estimates that there are over a million illegal aliens in Florida, and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has prosecuted more non-citizen voting cases in Florida than in any other state.

McDonald's - 2010-03-15 16:48:26
Yes, McDonald's hires illegal aliens. Yes, because of this teenagers and college students looking for part-time work are missing out on opportunities to work for this company because of that. I recently wrote a letter to McDonald's inquiring if they would consider, in these difficult economic times, to voluntarily implement E-Verify or use some other means to assure American citizens that one of the country's biggest employers are giving jobs to legal citizens as opposed to illegal workers. They sent me a reply in return, stating they will not implement E-Verify because they do not believe in discrimination (uh, I didn't know verifying a person's legal status in this country is considered discrimination). So yes, McDonald's does employ illegal workers, and the day I received their reply is the day I stopped patronizing their establishments.

Thumbs up/down do not matter.... - 2010-03-15 09:19:20
Mike, I have been on these boards long enough to know to take the vote of thumbs up vs. thumbs down with a grain of salt. I am quite certain Casa de Maryland probably registers names on here simply to pay a bunch of illegals to click thumbs down to anything that speaks out against amnesty & tax dollars for illegals. The only people that want illegal aliens to have amnesty are the illegals themselves, Casa de Maryland, and the politicians that "buy" their votes with treasonous promises.

It(they) WILL work - 2010-03-15 08:55:04
For about 30 years now I have had a job that takes me around and into many different hospitals. From the beginning I observed that the people working in the "environmental services" jobs were almost always foreign born. Whether they were illegal or not, I didn't know and didn't care. The company I worked for, about 15 years ago, sent me out of the area to help out in the Western PA area. At that time, at least, I was stricken by the number of workers in the hospitals that were obviously native born Americans, doing the same jobs that locally here I could never have a conversation with.
That fact gives me faith that if the illegal aliens could be removed in one fell swoop, those jobs would be filled by people who could use the money. At the very least, once those jobs became open, there would be no excuse to continue to pay unemployment to anyone capable of working.

Illegals - 2010-03-15 07:47:38
In looking at the votes on these posts, it's pretty obvious that there are people that are in support of giving illegal aliens tax dollars. Call them liberals, call them what you want. The bottom line is the people that hire illegals ARE taking jobs away from americans. And no matter what you want to believe, there are americans out there that will cut lawns, wash dishes or whatever it takes to earn a living. Remove the entitlements that the bleeding hearts deem necessary and things will change dramatically. It infuriates me that there are third generation families living off of my hard earned taxes, complaining all the while that we don't give them more. Rep. Chris Van Hollen LOVES illegal - 2010-03-14 10:55:05
Look at the #1 most read story on this site. It talks about how Rep. Chris Van Hollen wants to grant illegals amnesty. He wants them to get to "live the American dream." I didn't know that evading taxes, driving down wages, using taxpayer funded services without paying into those services, and using fraudulent documents to obtain driver's licenses was considered part of "the American dream". People like Rep. Chris Van Hollen need to be removed from office, because he is using his position to aid & abet illegal aliens with OUR tax dollars rather than work towards ending taxpayer support for illegal aliens in a time when we are all struggling to make ends meet. Rep. Chris Van Hollen fights to protect illegal aliens in Maryland, with the help of YOUR tax dollars. How do you feel about that? Pay attention come this November folks, we need to get rid of those who refuse to fight for the rights of the legal taxpaying citizens who pay their salary. Feels kinda crummy knowing that Rep. Chris Van Hollen wants us to turn a blind eye to those who are in our country illegally. If you want to know the name of someone who WILL fight for the rights of legal taxpaying citizens, the look towards Kratovil. Rep. Frank Kratovil, D-Stevensville, co-sponsored legislation that would reject amnesty for illegal immigrants, called for stronger border protection, and would require employers to use the federal E-Verify system, which is used to determine a worker's status. God Bless America!

There are two problems at work here. One is the actual immigration problem.
The other is that we have set up a system whereby people can refuse to do these jobs and let society support them. The only reason that so many Americans can shun picking fruit, etc is that we let them. Work hard and make an honest living or sit at home and get your government check?
It used to be that pride would factor into that system (at least that's what my grandfather claims), but such is not the case any more. ICE needs to clear out these folks and wellfare needs to put people back into these jobs.

I see where you're coming from. BUT, there is an elephant in the room that conservatives never address. And that is that American capitalism depends, on many levels, on illegal immigrants to fill a niche. And this is what gets me as an Independent...for all of the chest-thumping and blind patriotism that has become the signature of the right, they have no problem defending the very corporations who do not support this country. These corporations send jobs overseas, incorporate offshore, do business with communist countries with brutal human-rights records. Yet, if you take these corporations to task for this, you are anti-capitalism or somehow un-American. So attack illegal immigration, I will not disagree with you. But don't fool yourself in thinking that the very corporations that you defend as conservatives do not depend on that labor to keep their prices down.

This is not about Hating or Ridiculing anyone.
This is not about Racial Prejudice or Bigotry of any kind.
This is about the Future of this Great Nation of Ours and how it is being undermined by a Flawed and Corrupt System. Pure and Simple.
I said in one of my posts how I did not want to sound like a Gun Toting Typical Republican who susbscribes to the One Sided Rhetoric spewed out by the likes of Bill O'Reilly,Sean Hannity, and Glen Beck among others.
Illegal Immigration is not only a threat to the safety of this country but also undermines the principles of capitalism which is why our economy is crashing.
Simply Put. The people who come here illegally receive (and this is Not my opinion these are facts) Free Medical Care,Food Vouchers,Job Placement,ESOL programs in our schools, and this is just the tip of the iceberg at the Taxpayers Expense.
If you have children it wouldn't hurt you to learn the facts before you start making judgements.
Just a thought.

What if... - 2010-03-13 20:06:54
...five years ago there were no illegal aliens in the US. Then, over the next five years we got to where we are now. Five years ago, digging ditches and picking fruit would not have had the stigma it has today, because college and high school students would be doing it for extra income. Maybe those jobs would even pay more than they actually did five years ago.
How did these jobs become stigmatized? Was it because the illegal aliens are doing them? If there never were illegal aliens these jobs would be sought after by anyone not employed and not getting unemployment after a designated time. And they wouldn't have to learn a second language to be able to work together.

re: Thomas Higdon post - 2010-03-13 20:04:51
Mr. Higdon - if you pay any attention to the Capital online or read any other articles, you will find that it's the same people posting their opinions to each article. They ridicule people who disagree with them, they use "big words" to try to get their points across. It's lame. I used to read the Capital online all the time after moving out of the area, but it just grew too annoying. It's "Mr. Shubie," Mr. Gunderson, and a few others who are constantly putting hateful or illogical messages on these boards. People can't even put their homes up in the "Home of the Week" section without being ridiculed for their tastes or possessions. It's asinine. These people have nothing better to do; you learn to ignore them. It's my hope that these people are not representative of the rest of the area's beliefs. I think the human race would be screwed if it that were so.

It is therefore unfair that all of the business that are known to be associated with illegal humans are not sequentially robbed of their illegal human labor. Instead we read about one and then six months later another on and so on and so forth. What is wrong with ICE Are they lazy ? Are there so few clusters of illegal humans that it takes months between busts ?
This ICE people and other agencies need to spit or get off the pot.
They are not exactly very productive at this illegal people removal business.

If illegals have issues with being arrested, all they need to do is not break the law. It's pretty simple, really.
You don't need "contraband" to break the law. Come on, do you really think that? And it's like the gestapo? Puh-lease.
The sad here is that they will be housed on taxpayer money in lockup while their cases wind slowly through the system.

Illegal is illegal - 2010-03-13 11:17:49
It is illegal to be here illegally. It is a basic and easy concept to understand.
Why stop at Timbuktu? Why choose Timbuktu? I suspect that they were large enough to make smaller employers think "oh, if they take them down, they can take me down", and I also suspect they were a bit more egregious on hiring them.
So, you take down the easy targets and there will be a spillover effect on other businesses.
Are there larger ones? I am sure, but perhaps their illegals are not "out in the open" as in a restaurant. Maybe they are working inside a factory and police have no reasonable cause.
It is a good step in the right direction. The nation has a policy in effect for becoming legal. We turn very few away. However, if you are here illegally, avoiding taxes and taking advantage of public resources, you need to go!

Rome Is Burning - 2010-03-13 00:31:43
Well Illegal Immigrants must be doing something right because they drive nice cars, live in nice houses, and I don't think you can afford a Satellite Dish on the top of your house on a $5.00 dollar an hour salary.
Truth is They have the perfect Racket.
They rent (then buy) a Two Bedroom House and put Three to Five Families in it.
The money They make is put together collectively and divided up between families who branch out and do the same thing for other families (It's like Networking)
The reason why Illegals have so much money is because Yes Folks It's true Sadly, They DON'T PAY TAXES. You have to have something called a BIRTH CERTIFICATE to obtain a Social Security Number.
I could go on but I would take up the space of an Encyclopedia but eventually they will re-gain control over this country because right now we're bascially not doing anything about it and it's all on OUR DIME.

Ed, you're living a fairy tale; Even unskilled illegals make more than $5.00 an hour - more like 8 to 10. You're right, not a lot of americans are lined up to do those jobs. Why should they? They make plenty by sitting on their collective butts and collecting public aid - some of them for their entire lives. Accepting an honest job disqualifies them from this free money and housing and who wouldn't take a bird in the hand? Turn off the cash spigots and see how many line up for work on menial jobs and climb the ladder like anyone else with a sense of worth! The Illegals? deport them to Iraq no matter where they are from!

It's great that they are quickly reporting the illegals at the jail. We have enough criminals without importing them from abroad. But targeting people who are trying to make a living is ridiculous. I don't see people lined up to wash dishes for $5 an hour. Let the workers be.

8 million illegals in Workforce - 2010-03-12 18:04:49
1986 IMMIGRATION LAWS WERE NEVER BROKEN--JUST NEVER ENFORCED.
California--THE SANCTUARY STATE--IS broke because of the invasion. Arizona and border states are teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. Many other states like New York also have massive debt, because they have pandered to impoverished, desperate foreigners. WHY do you think many states other than Sanctuary California is mandating E-Verify? Utah is signing E-Verify into law as it passed the house. Enforce immigration laws, secure the border and resuscitate Proposition 187 (cutting of welfare to illegal alien families in California) that never was allowed to reach the Supreme Court. Station the National Guard along the border. Make illegal entry into the United States a felony. Arizona has very rigid immigration law pending. Georgia too and others have enforcement laws.
Here is are some quick facts: JANUARY WELFARE COSTS FOR CHILDREN OF ILLEGAL ALIENS EXCEEDED $50 MILLION DOLLARS March 9th 2009 LOS ANGELES COUNTY Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich released figures from the Department of Public Social Services showing that illegal aliens children born in the United States collected over $50 million in welfare benefits (CALWORKS + Food Stamps) for the month of January.
Approximately 23% of all CALWORKS and food stamp issuance in Los Angeles County are made to parents who reside in the United States illegally and collect benefits for their native-born children. When you add this to $350 million for public safety and nearly $500 million for health-care, the total cost for illegal immigrants to County taxpayers far exceeds $1 billion a year not including the millions of dollars for education and prison upkeep, said Antonovich.
Don't listen to the rhetoric and propaganda of critics about E-VERIFY. ITS being progressively upgraded, with new innovations to stop illegal workers STEALING YOUR JOBS. Its your right and an obligation of our politicians to enforce this law and to serve Americans and not ca

Kudos - 2010-03-12 14:56:57
Kudos to local law enforcement for doing a fine job arresting suspected criminals. If the trend continues, the establishments within the County will discontinue the hiring of illegals and we will all reap the benefit. The end result will be less strain on public resources and less crime.

ICE - 2010-03-12 14:16:25
We as a people (Americans) have to start somewhere. Yes we need to target all business but unfortunately we can't. Maybe we should cut the funding from other programs that support illegals and use that money to hire more ICE agents. We finally have a stand up guy who's not afraid to get the ball rolling, my hats off to Mr. Leopold!!

Your logical is flawed. That would be like telling the police to stop writing tickets, unless you target every highway

I'd like to see more enforcement of current laws and would like to see a requirement of all landlords to verify legal status for renting using e-Verify.

Good Work. - 2010-03-12 13:34:55
If we don't tarket any businesses, because we don't target all then we have no law left. Should the police not patrol one street for speeders because they don't patrol all streets? Resource management here.
I'm sure you are going to suggest we check out the Harbor Master's office, Mr. Shubbie?
We need to continue the ICE enforcement. But we certainly need to target both the illegal immigrants and the business owners. The only reason these people break the laws (repeatedly) to work here is because there is money to be made. We need to teach the businesses a lesson or two about making this money available.
If you want to balance the city budget, clear out the people who shouldn't be here soaking up resources.
