ANNAPOLIS AREA

Bank card fraud

A Gemini Drive woman has reported that someone took nearly $2,000 from her bank account, paying for items with her bank card information.

The 38-year-old victim told city police Monday that someone had made several purchases at Sears and a WaWa store in the Philadelphia area totalling $1,952.

She also reported she had her bank card in her possession when the transactions took place.

Computer copped

A man in Annapolis for a conference reported that his laptop computer was stolen from a ballroom meeting space at Loew's Hotel on Monday.

An employee of Kimberly-Clark Corp. had left his laptop in the room Monday night, but when he returned it was gone.

Hotel security personnel and management also reported the crime to city police, and are questioning employees about the possible theft.

The HP computer, worth $845, was removed from the room but a presentation projector was undisturbed, police said.

A similar incident occurred last month when a Vermont business man reported his laptop stolen from a conference room at the West Street hotel.

SEVERNA PARK

Attempted break-in

Someone tried to break into the Anne Arundel Historical Society building in Severna Park between Saturday and Tuesday morning, county police said.

An employee discovered damage to the front door of the store at 1004 Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd. around 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Police said someone kicked the door several times, causing it to crack about 10 inches from the deadbolt.

The would-be thief did not get inside the store and nothing was taken. Damage to the door is estimated at $500.

Trashcans burned

Two trashcans were set on fire outside a Severna Park home overnight Monday, county police said.

A 54-year-old man told police he put several trashcans in front of his home in the 300 block of Carlin Drive around 10:30 p.m. Monday for garbage pickup.

Just after 8 a.m. the next day, he discovered two of the trashcans had been burned.

County firefighters were called to the home to extinguish the smoldering trashcans.

SOUTH COUNTY

Boat burglarized

A television and case of beer was stolen from a docked boat in Edgewater overnight Friday, county police said.

John Franco , 51, of Edgewater, told police someone broke into his boat, docked at a pier at Shore Drive and Bentley Road, between 9:30 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday. A 20-inch Vezio television and 30 cans of beer were swiped from the vessel.

The stolen TV and beer are valued at $250.

There were no signs of forced entry, but he believes the thief manipulated the lock, police said.

NORTH COUNTY

Job theft scheme

A woman thought she found a new job, but was instead tricked out of $4,000, county police said.

The 22-year-old Glen Burnie resident told police she received an e-mail from an employment wanted ad she posted on Craigslist on July 15. A man who called himself Paul Davidson said he represented Minnesota-based Williams Associates and offered her a resume services position.

He obtained her personal information and said he'd be sending her an advance check for her services, police said.

The woman received a check for $5,000, but Davidson later told her there was a mistake and the check should have only been for $1,000.

He instructed the woman to deposit the check and wire the remaining $4,000 through Western Union.

Three days later, the woman was contacted by her bank and told the check was fraudulent. They said she was responsible for the transaction.

Scratch-offs swiped

A man claiming to be with the Maryland Lottery swiped more than $250 worth of scratch-off tickets from a Glen Burnie liquor store Saturday, county police said.

The manager of Sun Valley Liquors said a man walked into the store at 7933 Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd. around 6:30 p.m. and told the clerk he was with the Maryland Lottery. He said he was sent to the store to retrieve lottery tickets to be returned because there were no more winners, according to the police report.

The man did not show the clerk credentials.

Police said the clerk gave the man 91 Red Hot Blue 7's series lottery tickets. Maryland Lottery officials told police they did not send a representative to that location to collect tickets.

The lottery provider was unable to verify at the time if anyone had collected cash from any of the tickets.

The manager canceled the tickets.

Fire in church

A small blaze damaged a Brooklyn Park church early Tuesday morning, county Fire Department officials said.

Firefighters were called to St. John United Methodist Church at 6019 Bell Grove Road around 4:25 a.m. for a fire in the congregation room, said Capt. James Rostek, a county Fire Department spokesman. Crews quickly extinguished the flames.

An electrical malfunction caused the blaze, which caused an estimated $10,000 in damages.

No injuries were reported.

Man stabbed

A man was stabbed and robbed while walking in Glen Burnie late Saturday night, county police said.

The 30-year-old Glen Burnie resident was walking in the 300 block of Old Stage Road around 11:15 p.m. when three men walked up and confronted him.

The man was stabbed in the upper torso during the altercation. After stabbing the man, the men grabbed his cash, a cell phone and his wallet before running away.

The victim was taken to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore with injuries that were not considered to be life threatening, police said.

Police searched the area but could not find his attackers.

They are all black in their mid- to-late teens, all with dark complexions. Two of the suspects were wearing dark clothing and the third was not wearing a shirt.

Shot fired

Two men reported hearing a gunshot shortly after two other men asked them for cigarettes while walking in Pasadena late Monday night, county police said.

Officers were called to Tick Neck Road near Crystal Place around 11:45 p.m. to investigate a fight.

Police did not find a fight. However, two men walked up to the officers and said they were nearby when two men asked them for cigarettes.

When the men said they didn't have any, they said one of the men pointed a red laser light at their knees.

While walking away, the men said they heard a single gunshot and ran away.

Officers searched the area and found a single shell casing on the ground. No one was injured.

It is unknown who the shot was directed at or who fired the gun.

The two men who asked for cigarettes are white, in their late teens with short brown hair. One was wearing a white T-shirt and jean shorts and the second was wearing a black T-shirt.

Scrap stolen

Someone stole more than $1,000 worth of steel scrap from outside a Brooklyn Park business last weekend, county police said.

An employee of Reliance Fire Protection Co. said the business, at 709 East Ordnance Road, was closed from 4 p.m. Friday through the weekend. When he returned to the business at 5:30 a.m. Monday, he discovered someone had used a cutting tool to break a chain, which secured the fencing overtop a Dumpster.

The Dumpster, which contained more than $1,000 worth of steel piping scraps, was empty.

The employee told police they have had two thefts from the Dumpster in the past.
