Aluminum missing

Police are seeking charges for a Brooklyn Park man following a report of aluminum being stolen from a local glass company and sold to a local materials reclamation company, city police said.

The proprietor of American Glass Co. on Legion Avenue told police he had noticed aluminum framing missing over the past month and been called by Mid-Atlantic Recycle Center and told that one of his employees had brought in 92 pounds of aluminum, police said.

The owner was able to identify the alleged culprit via a copy of his driver's license and video of the man bringing the aluminum in to the recycling center. He confronted the employee, who admitted to the theft, police said.

Charges are being sought against the 34-year-old suspect.

Propellers pilfered

An Annapolis woman reported two boat propellers were stolen from her boat late Wednesday or early Thursday.

The 55-year-old victim told police the two brass propellers, worth $250 each, were sitting on the ground under her boat at Annapolis Yacht Sales on Edgewood Road where her 65-foot Chris Craft Commander was under maintenance repair. An investigation continues.

SOUTH COUNTY

Pot bust at beach

County police made two arrests early Thursday morning while patrolling an Edgewater beach.

Officers were at Beverly Beach Park at around 2 a.m. in search of noise violations, drug activity, trespassing and other offenses. They found two men sitting on a picnic table with suspected marijuana.

Police searched a backpack and said they found drug paraphernalia, two plastic bags containing 82.2 grams of suspected marijuana, worth $1,644, a digital scale, plastic baggies and $1,000 in cash.

Tayler Madden, 19, of 1106 Murray Drive in Edgewater, was charged with drug possession with intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia, trespassing and possession of marijuana.

Corey Bissett, 19, of 3535 Oak Drive in Edgewater, was charged with drug possession and trespassing.

Bissett is the son of Phil and Robin Bissett. Phil is a former state delegate and is currently running for the County Council's District 7 seat. Robin currently serves on the Anne Arundel County Republican Central Committee and is running for re-election. The Bissetts said Friday morning that the incident will not affect their candidacies.

New Perspective - 2010-08-13 17:21:39

It took me almost an hour to read all of these comments. Wow. I learned about drugs, who to vote for and how to solve drug problems in the community. I had to look up some of the quoted statistics. Surprisingly they do check out. So let me see if I get all of this. We have a guy that spent the last 12 of his son's 19 years campaigning and losing. We have a teen that does drugs and drives around his friend the drug dealer to his family's community private park to set up shop. Most of the residents in the area think that this is reason for the family to reconsider their candidacies. They continue to campaign. Their son continues down the drug path (2 arrests in 6 3 months)with the parents still sign waving. The tax payers are out at least $40 grand and have to look at more signs and waving teams onthe highways. How is all of this good for the community or the residents? I just dont get it. Then, as if all of it was not bad enough, all the hippie throwbacks and best friends of their and their family try to defend it. Something out of a daytime soapopera. Yikes! I have something for everyone to pray for: an end to all of this. I cant imagine the soapopera that will follow should he actually get elected. Thankfully the voters must have known better, cause they said no before. Lets hope they do it again.

Diary of an obsessive man - 2010-08-13 17:05:22

Why Why why would someone keep running for public office when they keep losing? An obsessive man is he! I know that anyone elligible can run, but give the voters a break already. I am so tired of seeing his name on signs. At least his wife saved the voters from seeing her name out there too. Like it or not, voters expect a self-claimed model of family to be just that. If he removed all the pontification about family first maybe Edgewater would not still be up in arms about this perennial weed reemerging. Well, to be honest. I still think he should give it up, but some are just addicted to power and media attention. Addictions tend to run in familes genetically. Now we know where the teen gets his obsessions/addiction tendencies from. Mom and dad are addicted to politics and he is addicted to drugs. What a profile! At least he is not the only choice for the seat, unlike in 2002 where republicans had to hold their nose to vote for him against Owens. You Bissett friends monitoring this board - please tell them to put an end to the obsessive candidacy status and stay retired.

Republicans beware - 2010-08-13 16:27:18

Rotarians have the right idea. When you join you take a pledge. If you break it, you are out. Make the candidates take a pledge, vet them for financial, criminal and family stability. We may have less candidates on the ballot, but in the end, we only need one good credible, clean background candidate qualified to run to beat the blue team. I dont need 5 to choose from, just one real good one. Bissett just doesnt fit the bill, and neither does that norkus freak. He has pending and past cases and divorce issues pending. Note to candidates: Get your house in order before filing. You are really screwing up the party. then there's the wife -- a "symbol" of what a republican is. That is a good drunk joke, but not a good way to lead a party. There is a reason we are still in the minority and Bissetts are good examples.

Rhinos and criminals need not apply - 2010-08-13 16:20:20

What kind of republican is willing to throw the party under the bus for a claim to leadership? Only two types: Rhinos and Bissetts. McKonkey, Bissett Redmond,Law,....There is a long list. How can we take back congress, state and keep majority in council when we have law breakers and candidates with families and finances that are out of control? Run as an independent if you still think you are worthy of a vote, but the last time I checked the RNC, GOP and other sites, republicans have values, beliefs and a voter base that rejects the type of politics and lifestyles these tainted candidates share.

Pot in news again - 2010-08-13 16:12:40

So now a senator gets busted with it. When will people learn that illegal drug use never pays off. You can say all you want about "everyone did/does it" or "teens do this", but the cost to process these criminals is very high. How any elected official or candidate can claim to be for budget cuts or smaller government and be involved in illegal activity is beyond me. I dont care about people's feelings or even where it happened. I care about where my tax dollars are spent. We are going to spend at least $40K to process this Bissett teen and probably similar for the senator. Here's a deal (since bissett likes to brag about them on his website): Pay back the taxpayers before paying for any more stupid fake traffic signs on Rte 214. If he really cared about smaller government, he would pony up. I say no jail time, just our $40 grand back please. In this budget crisis times, we cant afford to elect candidates that cost us more than they are worth.

Robin - 2010-08-10 20:24:50

There you go assuming again. Let me clear up your errors....rather, your ignorances.

For the second time in this post....MY NAME IS RONDA GRAY!!!! It is not an alias, it is my name....you can find me in the phone book under the same name, you can also check my criminal record by that name.

My grandparents raised me so if I had gotten in any real trouble, I guess by your standard they would have been at fault. Luckily for me, my teenage mischief never amounted to much more than a few school rules broken (dress codes, class skipping to go to McDonalds, a little lack of authority at times). I grew up just fine. I have birthed two of the most beautiful creatures I've ever seen on this Earth, we are active members of our church and my husband and I have many friends and wonderful fmaily members. We hold great positions with our companies and are self-sufficient and educated.

That being said, I beleive that many teenagers go through some mischief in their lives but their families emerge unscathed. Drugs are a little trickier and beyond experimenting I think it's easy to fall into a lifestyle which is where a lot of kids and adults too are getting lost.

I, too, would like to see Cory turn the page on this chapter in his life and leave drugs in his past. I still maintain, forever and a day, that Cory is responsible for his behavior and we can't hold Phil responsible for his every action. I believe that, as a parent, he is dealing with those issues in private, who wouldn't? I respect his privacy and support him while he battles this difficult time.

True Colors - 2010-08-10 17:15:33

Interesting that alias Ms Gray has had her share of teen experiences and experiments. Reality is there is a difference between grandparents and parents and what society expecets from them. Very few people in our society meet the criteria for good government candidates. It is evident in the number of applicants each year. Although this year has 6 total applicants for District 7, ultimately, few families would meet the critical media, voter reviews and investigations conducted by all into their lives. These Bissetts are seasoned candidates, although rarely elected. As such, they are aware of the level of scrutiny they are subject to. It is like applying for a cashier job and when your drawer is short you think you should get promoted to manager instead of fired. Life just isnt like that. Of course, based on the comrodery of the Bissett pot smoking fans, I can see why their reality is so distorted. Get off the drugs and get with the rest of the world. Stop making the family the poor victims of society.

Just the facts please - 2010-08-10 14:02:04

Straight from the Dept of Justice, # of teens who tried pot: 40.2%, # who use it: 12.3%, # who deal it: 1.7%. Contrary to the popular belief that all of our teens are out smoking pot in the bathrooms and parks, although many are curious, only 12% really use it and less than 2% deal it. These teens are not the typical teens, as they are real criminals. Enough with the all teens do it mantra. Although my oldest tried it once, none of my 4 kids ever needed to relieve stress or take the excitement of life to a higher level. None of their friends ever did either. Its the company those kids keep and who their family lets in the door when they are young that determines in large the path they take. Keep smoking pot Bissett fans, you may just get high enough to believe that the voters will be stoned enough to vote for him this time. The rest of the 88% out there will be voting for real, good value candidates based on the issues and their credetials.

So glad to see all the support for the Bissett family. I am raising two sons on my own and trying my best to instill values, standard and morals. But all it takes is one of them to make a bad decision one time that will forever change all of our lives. Ask yourself before you judge the Bissetts. When you were a teenagers how many decisions did you make that would affect your family? I know I did and anyone out there who says they didn't is a liar. The only difference is Mr. Bissett is running for public office. So those not in support of his candidacy is slurring an all American family. Shame on you and hopeful wishes to the Bissetts. My son goes to South River and says that they are really nice kids. Yep wrong place wrong time. I know I have done it. Just didn't get reported in the newspaper.

Maybe the police were seeing if drug dealing was happening at the establishment you were in. It seems thay got a tip or information from somewhere.Well done AACOPD.

82.2 grams of pot, 1000 cash, a scale and plastic baggies they were doing a little more than smoking a little pot. One thing for sure the police bust interrupted a few peoples supply. Would'nt suprise if there were more arrest coming.

Beverly Beach Says No - 2010-08-09 17:12:48

Joe, I don't agree that I would prefer one offense over the other. Beverly Beach doesn't want drug dealing going on in our community. We have young families here and good people. We like being a family-centered community. Also, just to set the record straight (and I am usually the first to jump on police harassment because it happens a lot, I think, when they should actually be doing their job catching criminals) a neighbor called the boys in for a noise voilation at 2:30am on a Thursday. Probably one of those rice-beater cars with their loud exhaust (DUH). In this case, Beverly Beach residents acted on their community watch. Good thing too, we want to nip that kind of behavior in the bud.
I'm still voting for Phil Bissett, as I stated before. I don't believe that one has to do with the other. Cory will have his day in court and a judge will decide his fate for his hand in the crimes he's committed. And, PLEASE, before everyone jumps all over me again, if you decide not to vote for Phil for WHATEVER reason, I respect your opinion. Let me alone to mine.

Read the whole story folks - 2010-08-09 14:22:32

For such a small article, I cant believe these people wont read the whole thing. The part of this summary briefing story that we are all commenting on is not the aluminum. Have at it Brooklyn Park. I dont know the details, but do know that no candidates are involved in the matter. What has so many up in arms over this story is the dealing drugs in Beverly Beach. Just as the getaway car person in an armed robbery is equally guilty, so is Bissett for dealing. He got off easy. I am looking forward to this teen's trial. I believe it is August 17, so keep your eyes out for their campaign spin on the outcome. Doesnt matter to me. There are more qualified candidates that seem to be raising upstanding lawful candidates. He really should stay retired from politics. As the others pointed out, what has he even done for the community on any issue in the last several years? Nothing is the answer.

Thankfully, the republicans will decide who you can vote for come november. This guy has not done anything mentionable for our community and now, cause of his campaigning, has left a bad reputation for Beverly Beach to clean up. Stop smoking pot and get back to reality. It is neighbors like you that make cleaning up crime challenging. I guess it takes an enabler to know one. While you are driving your drunk friends around, Phil and Robin are providing room and board for a druggie. I guess you all make great partners.

Not just a little pot - 2010-08-09 14:04:51

If you really read the report you would see that they were dealing it at the beach, not just smoking it. Both are criminal offenses, but dealing it goes beyond teens hanging out. I would hope that the police would be hiding, looking for dealers in places were it happens a lot. I think you would be better off moving to CA, cause in AACO, we say no to drugs, period.

BIG DEAL! - 2010-08-09 13:53:37

I happened to be in Beverly Beach Saturday night at the Bayside Inn with friends and noticed police "sneaking" around and lurking in driveways watching customers of the establishment. I was NOT drinking alcohol that night and was the designated driver, but found the police scoping out a local hangout offensive. Granted these kids were smoking pot which is illegal, but I am more prone to believe the police happened upon the youngsters and started the usual harrassment. I would much rather two young men sitting on a picnic table near my home smoking a little weed than drinking. Just my thoughts, and as a registered Democrat I still believe in Bissett (Republican) and WILL BE VOTING FOR HIM!

Finally a reprieve of liberal apolo - 2010-08-09 00:09:45

Glad to see I am in the majority in realizing how wrong this story spins out. I have grave concerns that these two boys were properly raised. I understand we all know someone this has happened to. We show sympathy. Perhaps, but to accept it as somehting that happens is apethic and is why the criminals find you such easy prey. They need some reality check with some jail time with the big boys. Maybe they will learn their lesson, but the village cant reinforce this at home. It will take mom and dad to make certain we stay safe. I think that holding their hand as if they were the victims one of the highest insults ever. The people questioning the captial on their lackluster converage of this story is disappointing but typical. Say no to the bissett family at the end of the day. Only way to put this one down once and for all.

Between the tax cost for repetitively processing this criminal and the permissive attitude for drug dealers, I dont know how else to express what is so very wrong/

the point of the exercise - 2010-08-08 23:57:28

The point of the unsettling feelings being expressed by some many is to make certain the community does not become a repeat victim. Drug users and dealers are creatures of habit and so the year is still young. He has been arrested twice for the same thing. The surface of this story indicates that this is not a huge deal. Its the details, the response, and how you manage one of their toughest parential challenges. You cant find time to help your son, what kind of response will we get from these two when we need them to work with us in the communites for projects, support.

real optimism - 2010-08-08 23:50:04

I think the real optimism would be to presume that family has a clue about priorities. That they would put the healing and moving on part of story above their own political interests. I usually only vote on Presidentials years, but Bissett is getting the vote out -- out against himself. Have registration card - will NO for bissett. Do they think we are that stupid as to not hold them accountable for their actions and the lack thereof. Thanks to all those other candidates I see signs for - thanks for stepping up to give us real choices where there is no room for family soapoperas.

A note of Optimism - 2010-08-08 23:43:22

I would really like to think that our media is unbias and would not hold back the cry of the community in the interest of protecting someone or "burying" a story. I do find it challenging to think that they have yet to get any editorials in based on the number of concerned residents. I for one find it very odd a man and woman would just move forward as trained soldiers. I think in retrospect the trained soldier would have better priorities and put his family first. These two have a choice and the one they made will not pay off at the polls from what me and my friends and neighbors discuss.

Release the editorials - 2010-08-08 23:38:27

Paul has a good point I did not even consider: writer safety. Drug criminals are very apt to comit get even type crimes. I really wish the media was like it used to be: you could trust them to follow the right stories and let the people respond to them. When public safety is consideration, the voice of the people should not be surpressed in the interst of a policy that does not allow someone to have a voice and stay safe. Why would I give the Capital my address and phone number so the guy's campaign people can simply look it up at work. Shameful, Capital. Give this community a say. Just because the bissetts are hiding, does not mean those peole should be hidden.

Good observation. - 2010-08-08 23:32:44

Where are the editorials? Of course, I would not want their teen coming after me. I dont know about the rest of the world, but I would not want them getting my address to harass. Criminals tend to go after their critics and although I think when you commit a felony drug charge you deserve public scrutiny, I suspect the boy has the same type of temper I have seen Phil, the dad exhibit before. The guy may keep losing but he obviously has friends in high places. The Capital should reconsider their policy when it is a matter of safety of the letterwriter.

Ok, I have seen a good almost 100 comments on this polics story and the Capital continues to run sign crime pieces and speeding tickets of candidates, but buries this story. At least there will be a trial - 2010-08-08 23:24:35

I am pleased to see his trial scheduled for August. maybe we will actually hear from the parents on this after all these weeks. He should take more time reaching out to the community for real. Not only has he been absent from community affairs for the last 3 1/2 years, but he is obviously absent in criminal activities of this children. Then she has the audacity to claim to represent the leadership of the republican party. Yet another republican embarrassment. When the trial is over, I honestly hope their political careers immediately follow. We as a community and as a party deserve better.

decision time - 2010-08-08 23:18:09

Yes. There needs to be some decisions by the family that demonstrates their true leadership and concern for the community. They are hiding from the community that fell victim to this crime. That community has a right to an apology. It is obvious that they will be waiting possbily forever.

what they should do - 2010-08-06 11:29:20

Respectfully, the Bissetts ought to skip this political season and get their son straightened out. Their kids are almost grown, so there will be time for political fame later on. While still these boys need their parents guidance and support, they should be there for them. maybe work jobs with more predictable schedules. ive known the boys (not necessarily the parents) since they were little and found all three to be well-behaved and polite. Yes, the middle child has gone astray and needs to be reeled in like good parents can do. and he needs to face his punishment like anyone else. he wasnt always a drug dealer/user - and doesnt have to stay that way. This will take love and dedication from his parents. it will obviously be easier to take care of this if both parents werent running for office at the time. Im sure the pressures of being their son are high. and by the way, the signs are nauseating to see every 20 feet, phil should take some down. i wouldnt donate to someone who has that many signs. its not about who has the most signs. Actions speak louder than words(on or off paper!) Show some leadership!

Sad commentary - 2010-08-05 18:12:46

Clearly there is a lack of closure due to the family's closed door response. Personally I dont have the passion about this to see the family turn Beverly Beach into a three ring circus. As a capitalist at heart, I would hate for their community to get a bad reputation over it - house values folks....They as a family obviously relish in the limelight, given their repeat candidacy, but if I were to walk away with something in this article it is let the community say and do what they need to in order to heal. They were victims of drug crimes, period. If Omalley can drum up the courage to speak out about his family recovery plan, then so can this career politician family. Just saying....

Interesting comment site - 2010-08-05 17:27:53

Coming from the other article on bissett this week and checked in my curiousity. I think that the comments are definately emotional, passioned, but both sides are claiming "comment plants?" I suspect that after campaigning for so many years after cutting so many deals in the 1990s as a delegate is bound to draw lovers and haters of Bissett. Reality check: Paranoid statements discredit anything legitimate being said. There are legitimate comments, although mixed with emotions. Seeing passion and emotion about holding on to your community reputation and wanting to ward off crime can bring out the less than desirable in people. It is based in fear. Fear is not the best motivator but its usually based on facts. Attacking the commentors does not help your Bissett family or the son. It makes them look guilty of what they are saying. Personally I dont care. I dont consider a perennial candidate worth that much emotion.

Crofton - 2010-08-04 10:02:57

Beverly Beach cares, believe me we do. I refuse to turn my back on them while they go through this. It isn't what I do, as a Christian.
Does that mean that I support his sons decision to engage in drug activity? No. Does it mean that I support it being done on our private community beach, ABSOLUTELY NO.
It just means that I don't have all the facts in the case, nor do I know what is going on inside their home to manage the incident so I won't make assumptions as to character, their ability to be good candidates or their parenting skills. It is not my job to judge them. As a neighbor, and a Christian, it is my job to support them during a, no doubt, difficult time. I don't know Phil or Robin personally, however I am his brothers neighbor and I think that they are just your average American parent dealing with a difficult teen. It is sad that they have to do it in the public spotlight where so many other parents are able to do it privately. The problem is, now the public wants them to deal with this embarassing situation publicly as well, and I just think it should be between Cory's parents and Cory, not all of Anne Arundel County...whether Phil and Robin are in the public eye does not change the fact that family matters deserve some privacy.
I don't mean to sound harsh to you, Amanda but just because I don't do what YOU feel is the right thing, does not mean it is wrong. When my time comes, I would rather answer to the Lord than answer to the people. I choose what my faith and my heart are telling me. That is not to judge. To each his own.

Bissett signs - 2010-08-04 09:28:02

At least crofton does not have to look at too many bissett signs every day. The creepiest one is a cardboard cutout of him waving at you. It freecks my kids out. It has only appeared twice briefly, but still. What kind of person has cutout boards made of themself? The same type who puts campaigning above family. It is psychotic to continue to campaign year after year. I am all for try try again spirit, but that is in sports, not in politics. I hope Crofton does not get inundated with Bissett small government signs like we have. I guess he has a lot of family around here because few I talk would even consider putting a sign up, especially after this drug dealing episode.

Your community continues to take a stance. You are building a community center for teens, have extra police and frequent events like the National Night Out on Crime. I applaud your dedication as a community to keep drug users and dealers away, gangs out of the streets, and raise your kids with THEIR best interest at heart. Regretably we have career campaigners (not career politicians - they actually get elected) who are so self centered they dont take the time to raise their son's proper.

Crofton Good Example - 2010-08-04 09:13:08

The Beverly Beach Gray family should take an example from Crofton Community and reject the destructive decisions this family is making not just for themselves but also on behalf of the community. You cant be against drug use and drug dealing in your community but for the family. It tells outsiders that you really dont care, but just want to look concerned to the general public. You are either for it or against it. Not to be pundant, but there is no Gray area when it comes to fighting crime and drugs in the community. Let the family support themselves. They created the wall and only they can bring it down.

Absence Obvious - 2010-08-04 09:06:12

I dont think this guy realizes that attending events like this is campaigning and supporting the community. I too observed the casual conversations included his family and the drug arrest. Many are sympathetic to their drug problem as a family unit but think that as a possible councilman and republican leader, they need to rethink their priorities. He clearly has no interest in saying no to crime, drugs, or supporting communities who do. Absence sometimes does not make the heart grow fonder.

Crofton National Night out on Crime - 2010-08-04 08:42:05

I went to the National Night out on Crime in Crofton last night. Several candidates were there, showing their support of the community. Jenny Adkins, Chris Jone's mother was there and many others. Who was obviously absent were the Bissetts. If they attended more events that promote saying no to drugs and crime in the community maybe their sons would have better role models at home. They had a chance to show community they still care and attend the event. Instead they still hide behind their campaign signs. The event was well attended and fun. Many families had a chance to meet the drug sniffing dogs, discuss drugs and crime and gang violence. Maybe the Bissetts could have learned something too. Absence is very telling of their priorities. Good news is that people were talking about their bizare obsession with campaigning year after year and so at least the people are starting to get it.

I too came from the other article. After reading this article and other factoids interwoven in these extensive comments, I understand the frustration the community must feel every time they see this guy's signs and see him waving. Severna Park works as hard as your community to stay drug free and keep the bad guys out of public office. Some do fall prey to the drug lifestyle, even in our community. In this case, the apple did not fall far from the tree. They as professional candidates could not even follow simple sign rules. We lead and parent by example. You have my support and please keep the faith. If crofton can stand up to gangs, you can stand up to drug dealers and users like the bissetts.

unbelievable response - 2010-08-03 17:38:41

Here we are, just 40 some days away from deciding who will represent our values, our beliefs and our fiscal approaches. Enter the perennial candidate. These old faces have old stories, replayed like something out of rainman. I live on the other side of edgewater, so this did not happen at my playground. That stated, I dont ever want it to. I support the community, the peninsula and their courage to say no to the Bissett reality tv hour. I appreciate some folks comments on the financial burden these criminals place on a community indirectly and direct costs considered. I followed the article from the Hartley story on Smaller Government signs to this article. This Bissett guy has no clue about what it will take to fix our county's crisis. He cant even manage public statements on his family drug problems well. He will always have the few fans and family friends to vote for him and support him. It is not my job to placate his victim mantality. personal responsibility is a huge part of the smaller government equation. As for the wife; please for the sake of our party, step aside. You dont represent the majority values. We as the minority party have few seats to represent us. this election is too important to be expensed by your personal issues. As I said about Benoit: old approaches and outdated solutions never solve anything - including your family's drug problems. The campaigns will do nothing to help you or the voters solve their crisis. Time to move on Bissett family. Stop insulting the community and voter's intelligence. Stop campaigning once and for all

Crofton Ally - 2010-08-03 15:31:17

To those struggling with this issue in Edgewater and Mayo, know that Crofton went thru a greater tragedy a little over one year ago. Prior to that tragedy there were the "little" arrests. Many in the community dismissed it as teens do these things. The parents of the criminals would shrug and say "I did nothing wrong" They played the societal victims. Edgewater concerned citizens are right on target. You need to address the issue before it is too late. Drug deals and crime go hand in hand - ALWAYS. To presume otherwise is stupid and nieve. Just because you got lucky this time, does not mean the next time the druggies wont get in their car and kill someone, turn one of the middleschool kids into drug addicts, and worse still, your neighborhood becomes known as the local drugstore for teens wanting a fix. house values, personal values, family values and community values are all depreciated when this stuff happens. Ahhh, the cost of progressive socialism. That's right. The "all teens do it" "family is victim" and "society tax dollars are not relevant" are all social progressive thoughts that are destroying our community.

You cant say you are prepared to lead us when you coward behind your campaign signs. Cowards disrespect the law, the community and intimidate the community. Sending commentors like Gray to mitigate these comments to your advantage - pleading the victim -- poor poor Bissetts -- turns our community into a carnival in the rain. Let out the sunshine again and stay away from our communities. The bissets are a family of carnival clowns. I agree with the other commentors: They genuinely disrespect the law. disrespecting out community - 2010-08-03 11:51:56

There is a reason for laws. violating them is a disturbance to the community and in some cases a grave threat. These teens pose a grave threat. Phil's signs were a disturbance. The Hatch act is the example of why voters dont trust appointed and elected officials. Question to those few and far between Bissett fans: Explain again what he is doing for our community? Above the Law - 2010-08-03 11:30:40

I agree in part with the editorial a couple of weeks back about signs up early. All but one candidate followed the rules in our district. It is the same one that we as a community have a right to question as to their good judgement and commitment to build a safe community that rejects ALL lawbreakers. The last commentor was right. This is blatent disregard of the law. What makes it worse is our county executive did not direct anyone to get them taken down. We are not talking about them going up a week early. Rather, he had them up over a month early. Why make sign laws when you are not willing to enforce them Mr. County Executive. What did the county exec get in exchange for letting this guy get a clear advantage over the other 4 candidates - illegally? I for one would like to know. Talk about special treatment.

Respect for the law - 2010-08-03 11:17:19

Looking at the whole picture, there is a pattern of disrespecting the law this family has established over the years. He got busted for violating the hatch act in 2005. That is a law that prevents state employees from distributing favors for votes/campaign contributions. When you have the authority he claims to have had while a state employee, to not understand that your campaign places you in violation of this is absurd. This late spring/early summer, despite the the sign ordinances stating clearly that 60 days before the primary is the first day to place campaign signs, up goes dozens of his. Now he faces grave family problems and credibility with the local community and voters at large. He does all of this in the name of his campaigns. The law should not be excepted just because he is the king of campaigning. He is subject to our laws just like all of the others. He is also responsible for his dependents just like all of the rest of the parents out there. His disrespect for the law has been modelled to his kids over the years and look what we now raised, as a result: A drug user/dealer. Way to go Phil and Robin. What laws will the dynamic campaigning duo break next? Stay tuned.

nothing shocking - 2010-08-03 01:18:52

In all my years as a responsible parent, citizen and neighbor, I have to say that it is not commonplace for dealers to land on our beaches in the middle of the night in the middle of the workweek. The dismissal of their addiction is evident of the people still willing to vote for PHil and Robin. Im sorry, but after the first arrest, it would have been time for the reality check. What kind of parent does not do everything to get their child the help he needs. What type of love does a person have for their child not to do everything to get him the help he needs. The focus on the campaign thing is more disturbing than originally thought about. This is nto a normal family. Can you say group therapy? Even Tony Supprano types get this type of help for their families stay in control during crisis.

shocked - 2010-08-03 00:31:33

I was away on vacation and went on the hometown site to see what hot stories I might have missed. I was intregued to see an older police beat, so I read on. I remember the guy from past elections, but dont recall her on our ballot. It must be frustrating living in Mayo and seeing such arrogance of presumption in their quick, short response. I read in the comments the teen has prior drug charges. I must say, although it may read as if these comments are spoken by overreactive people, but I have to say I would not find anything acceptable about my neighbor's family trespassing on my community playground, and inviting a drug dealer to your uncle's community playground has no real excuse. I can imagine the struggle of the community, knowing this family personally and being forced to decide between making the right choices and supporting a friend. Shame on them for putting their friends and family thru this. If this teen thug lives with them, no excuse for this happening under their watch. Sorry, but I need to choose the community on this one. I guess I dont know them as well as that RG person so passionate and misspoken.

Crime Awareness - 2010-08-03 00:12:14

Great to see so many people with their priorities in order on how to handle crime in the community. I have never heard of elected officials snubbing their noses at community discontent. The Bissetts could have made an additional statement ellaborating on their brief comment cited in this article. They chose silence. Their few supporters have not presented any factual information or logical explanatino for this family's choices in this matter. I thought that after a week we would see them step up to handle this circumstance responsibly. They have disappointed their party, their supporters and the Mayo community with their cowardly decision to put themselves above the health and well being of their teen and family. I cant help but feel disgust when I see him on the road side, grabbling for smiles and waves.

Psychie of a cadidate - 2010-08-02 09:10:45

I am amazed that this family continues to pursue public office. If there was no one else on the ballot, I would argue for their decision to continue to resolve this while campaigning, perhaps. That would be under the assumption that no one else credible is out there for these positions and that this was their teen's first brush with the law. I would throw him into rehab and then pursue the position. There is no good reason for either of these two people to run for office. We have good prospects and plenty of them on the ballot this time. We dont need a 4 time loser that has questionable judgement, a lack of integrety and falsly portraits his family as the model we should follow. He is not for public safety by vote from what I read, nor by action. His words are like poison out there, dangling in his dying hope of having power he never truly had, nor will ever again. Sad and pathetic.

Crime and Punishment - 2010-08-02 08:35:47

I cannot believe that our justice system has a teen with multiple arrests released to mom and dad. I thought mom and dad could no longer be held responsible? If the teen was released into the care of the parents after the May arrest, then the parents did actually promise accountability for his actions, at least until the trial, which is scheduled for this week. You cant have it both ways. Either they are custodians of him or they are not. If I bailed someone out of jail claiming responsible for them till trial, I sure as heck would not allow them out till 2am with their drug dealing friends. They made a commitment to the police to keep him under control and they failed. failed as parents, failed as custodians, and well, as for Phil, failed last three times at the ballot booth. I think he is striving for number 4. Lets hope the teen is not shooting for 4 arrests. He is already at 2 and the year is only a little half way over.

I honeestly thought the family would have sent in print version of an editorial expanding or clarifying their conceited one line response at the end of this article. I thought this was the same guy who voted not to lower the blood alcohol level in the 1990's? I hope that our political party can come up with better candidates than this family. I dont want my future determined by a sympathy vote from his friends. Our future generation is counting on us to set the good example, elect the most responsible leaders, and keep the drug dealers out of the communities. This family has a credibility issue. I agree that driving while high on pot is just as deadly as driving while under influence. If he is weak on blood alcohol levels, he will be weak on drug crime as well. Thankful that he was not in charge of the whole county.

Bissett believers - 2010-08-01 16:48:34

Interesting that the only people coming to the family's defense are those who exhibit the most progressive philosophy of all comments. They dont want anyone to have to face personal responsibility. It's too uncomfortable. The conservative philosophy is grounded in personal responsibility. It is what motivates entreupraneurs to work, laws to be followed, civil order to occur and growth, personally and economically, to remain the constant of modern society. When we dismiss this core preceipt over societal affairs such as crime, community and civic conduct, you errode at the fabric of our society. The community has a right to be paid back, financially as well as consequentially (jail time, etc.) for the damage these criminal acts imposed on them. If you really believe that they should just be slapped on wrist, dealt with at the home or just let go, can I have your address? I want to know where to send the bill to. See it costs us some serious hard earned tax payer dollars to keep these type of criminals out of our community parks and I think if you really believe your progressive claptrap, you will be willing to pay the bill. I am not. I would bet I am in the majority on this.

Still Separating the Two - 2010-07-31 20:33:29

I have a viewpoint that only a few have agreed with so far, but I can bet no one would disagree with my next point. Beverly Beach WON'T tolerate drug use, especially on our beach. I've gone there and found empty cigar tubes and baggies flying around on the ground and I've been FURIOUS that those things were found there near the playground where my kids could find them the next day. It's not acceptable and I thank the people who live on Chesapeake who watch our beaches at night when the rest of the community is sleeping soundly in their beds. It is, indeed, a community effort to keep the beach clean and crime free.
I think this is a heads up to everyone that crime does occur when we are sleeping and it has happened on our beach and we need to be aware of it.
However, I still don't want to blame Phil Bissett for what happened. I still think that the county/state will deal with the crime as they see fit and the Bissetts will handle the punishment at home as they see fit. Beverly Beach will be more watchful of its beach and every community member will likely be more on guard to deal with any potential crime.

its not simple - 2010-07-31 10:29:59

This is one of those stories that is difficult to comment to, but inviting to do so. Here is a family that built their reputation on being a family guy. Phil even said his dedication to his kids is why he was absent during the vote on the largest tax increase in MD history while delegate in the 1990's. He planned a disney trip and didnt want to have to reschedule it. His website is littered with family value statements, pictures of coaching moments, and their family is pictured as perfect. You cannot sell yourself as the perfect family and then expect people to ignore something like this. Its not realistic. It is a sad picture of a family trying to regain power in the county they lost 3 times over and have not had for over a decade now. Phil served his residents in the 1990's and we all thank you. It is time for someone else to do this for us, so please take time to fix your broken family and let someone who has their house in order represent us on council. Its not like there are no other credible choices. There are 4 others whose kids arent using and dealing drugs that can do the job well.

Role Model - 2010-07-31 09:04:08

When you sign up as a coach, a candidate for public office, or any other significant leadership role you are telling the public that your life is something to strive to examplify. If this were a family that is simply my neighbor, there would not be comments and concerns being discussed. In theory, one of the reasons we as residents vote for these people is because what they have accomplished in business, in the community and in their family life. It is the latter that tells us what their true moral and ethical compass is. It is the latter that represents us among other districts, counties and states. When their family criminal affairs are out in the public, their criminal issues become ours. Candidacy is by choice. Representation is by will of voters. They have a right to be on the ballot, and we have a right to choice no at the ballot. Their handling of this affair was not representative of the majority of the residents and they remain silent.

statistics dont tell entire story - 2010-07-30 19:38:09

With all due respect to M.H. from Edgewater, the discussion is not as to whether the teens' long term health is affected by their smoking of pot. What they do in their own home is between them and the police. But they were not at a college fraternity party and they were not at home. They were at a privat community park. They drove a motor vehicle on public roads to get there (and had to illegally park I might add). They were selling it. They were breaking the law. If pot did nothing to affect your motor skills and brain function for at least an hour or two, there would be no demand for the product nor any desire to use it. Even in California where it is legal, they placed driving while under influence rules on it as well as selling it on the streets because drug deals, no matter what type, attracts more criminal activity where it is being sold and yes, it does affect your driving skills. These are also facts. I hope you are not smoking, dealing and driving under influence of pot in my neighborhood. I would not be as sympathetic as that Gray woman or the JJ from DC, both from Beverly Beach - where the crime occured, if you lived in my community. Your facts are irrelivant to the whole story and topics being discussed. This is not a legalize pot debate, it is an cry for help from a victimized community that wants to keep their park a drug free and crime free zone. Do us all a favor and stay away from Edgewater's community and public parks with your pot. Its still a crime.

Just the facts, not the emotion - 2010-07-30 15:54:12

Myth: Marijuana's Harms Have Been Proved Scientifically. Today we know that marijuana is much more dangerous than previously believed.

Fact: In 1972, after reviewing the scientific evidence, the National Commission on Marihuana and Drug Abuse concluded that while marijuana was not entirely safe, its dangers had been grossly overstated. Since then, researchers have conducted thousands of studies of humans, animals, and cell cultures. None reveal any findings dramatically different from those described by the National Commission in 1972. In 1995, based on thirty years of scientific research editors of the British medical journal Lancet concluded that "the smoking of cannabis, even long term, is not harmful to health."

United States. National Commission on Marihuana and Drug Abuse. Marihuana: A signal of misunderstanding. Shafer Commission Report. Washington, D.C.: U.S. Government Printing Office, 1972.
Deglamorising Cannabis. Editorial. The Lancet 356:11(1995): 1241.
Myth: Marijuana Causes an Amotivational Syndrome. Marijuana makes users passive, apathetic, and uninterested in the future. Students who use marijuana become underachievers and workers who use marijuana become unproductive.

drug crime solutions - 2010-07-30 09:19:33

Some of the commentors and many of the babyboomer generation and thereafter write off pot as no big deal. Many of them talk about the days when they used this drug as being fun and exciting - everybody does pot during the teen/college years. Reality check: pot is a drug that affects your short term memory, ability to drive, and is illegal (except medical purposes). These teens had not been arrested, would have got in their car and drove under the influence. Are you pot smokers out there ok with that too? This no big deal attitude needs to stop. With the drug user comes drug dealers and this arrest is a good example. Drug dealers destroy home values and divide communities.

Moving Forward - 2010-07-30 08:40:54

I was pleased to see some in the community moving towards a long term approach that mitigates the drug issues all communities face from time to time. Communities that have public areas must go above and beyond normal community vigilance to ensure their playgrounds do not become havens for drug dealers troubled teens and mischief. I hope that Beverly Beach, if they already do not have enhanced security, will work towards that effort. They as a community have an obligation to keep their area safe and drug free. Many other communities enhance their security detail during summer months and hire off duty police.

Mayo peninsula does have a civic group like crofton and severna park. It unfortunately is not very active and does not provide the platform to get the job done. It would be a great idea to revive it. Sometimes tragedy in a community triggers promise and unity in a community. Maybe this could be MCA's moment to reinvent themselves for the sake of public safety. I did attend a public safety forum in November but it was put together by a private resident and the exec's office. If Bissett were to somehow get elected (highly inprobably)I doubt he would be a good public safety example for the community. We need to send a resounding message that says no to drugs and their dealers. Parents beware. You may have to actually RAISE YOUR KIDS proper.

Matter of Fact - 2010-07-29 16:48:17

Does Edgewater have a civic association for all of their communities? If so, I suggest you ask the police to come down and meet with the citizens so they can help them patrol their community parks and playgrounds to minimize the drug trafficing in the neighborhoods. Crofton has had more significant crime issues in more recent past and it wasnt until the community really got involved in security, crime watch and similar did we reduce the criminal activity of our teen population. We are now trying to build a community center to provide a safe place for teens to be. Of course, at 2am the only place a 19 year old should be is at work, studying at college or asleep at home. They are not old enough to be at a bar after all. My 19 year old, if chose to live at home, would have one. My house, my rules. It is that simple.

show of concern - 2010-07-29 16:25:56

The fact that this story one week after the arrest is still alive is telling of the community's concern. No revised comment from the Bissetts. Great constituent services already! They have probably hundreds, if not more, upset, concerned and wanting to know more. Typical politicians. I thought 2010 was the year to vote to keep these types out. One could only hope.

Wow! - 2010-07-29 16:19:05

$43,000 is more than I thought. I must admit, I didnt believe the number, but when I looked it up, there it was: $21,500 per/ If this is how Bissett promotes smaller government (his latest campaign mantra), I will pass on his approach. Here's a better one: send the teen to rehab instead of running for council. That is the best way to save the taxpayers! Now that's a plan the county could live with!

Cost of Crime - 2010-07-29 15:55:02

The court system does not offer a punishment severe enough to teach these drug criminals the lessons they need to learn. The laws need changed so when someone gets arrested for a drug charge, if they get arrested again for a similar charge they have to go to jail until trial. The court system pampers these drug criminals almost as much as the parents and society do. This young adult is not a victim, he is a criminal. Until the justice system treats them as such, repeat offenders will continue to break the law and the law-abiding citizens will continue to pay the price. According to the most recent Urban Institue Justice report on cost of crime in Maryland, it costs the tax payers $21,500 per offense to process. For the year 2010, the Bissett teen cost the tax payers $43,000 and the year is only half way over. I think that is one reason why people are so upset at the teen drug user/dealer and his parents. They are tired of paying for parental neglegence and crimes with their hard earned money. Mr and Mrs Bissett say they stand for personal responsibility as Republican leaders. Will they be writing out the check for $43,000? Or will the teen be repaying us? I personally want my money back. Dont you? PS to Corey Bissett: no payback with drug money please. Get a job to earn money instead. who knows, it may teach you responsibility.

1/ How many priors has this teen had? Do we have a repeat criminal? Are there other types of criminal charges pending/convicted of? Drug dealers and users often commit other crimes. Fair question.

Usually (except for the most severe crimes) any brushes with the law for someone under 18 are sealed and not available to the public. So there is no way of knowing if Corey Bissett had any prior run-ins before he turned 18. However, according to public records, on May 10, 2010 he was arrested for possession of marijuana and has a court date for that charge scheduled for August 3, 2010.

Answers Please - 2010-07-29 11:15:49

I think that the purpose of the comments section is to state opinions and so I dont think that there is a need for the Bissett fans to get so worked up every time someone has an opinion that differs with theirs. We should be provided with answers from this family, though, on matters that affect our community as well as both parents candidacies. I want to know: 1/ How many priors has this teen had? Do we have a repeat criminal? Are there other types of criminal charges pending/convicted of? Drug dealers and users often commit other crimes. Fair question. 2/It was mentioned the Bissett teen has family living in that community. Was he a guest staying with them or did he trespass uninvited. If I lived in that community I would want to know if a neighbor is inviting people who use and deal drugs to my playground. 3/ How do these candidates assure the voters they can regain control of the adults living in their house? The supporters of them indicated that they should not be responsible for the actions of their adult kids. That's fine,BUT the adult teen is living in their Edgewater house. They are responsible to the community they reside in. 4/ Will the sherrif's office still keep the council candidate's endorcement? I think that might be a confidence issue between law enforcement and the community for them to consider. A public statement from them is appropriate I think. 5/ Will the Republican party publically support their vice chair and a candidate in their party? A statement would be appropriate to guide their party members who are getting beat up over this by the dems and independents. This election is too important.
The Bissett family has had now 7 days to make a statement clarifying the situation. The longer they stay silent, the more extreme the suppositions get. They are bringing these comments onto their burden unnecessarily. If you think these comments are bad, you should hear what people are saying in conversation.

Acquiring Perspective - 2010-07-29 03:19:28

Children, spouses, relatives and friends have this way of living their own lives, don't they? They make mistakes, embarrass you, let you down and go a contrary way to everything you taught them, hoped for them, thought they represented and believed they shared with you.

I can't read into the extent of Corey Bissett's individual involvement in the drug trade from the little information supplied in this article, and I don't rely on secondhand interpretations of other reports; at the very best, he used horrible judgment and kept bad company. He might have had his own habit to fund and been at minimum helping to sell in order to support it; more likely, to earn money for that and other teenage things if his parents aren't rich people and he is unable or unwilling to find a job. One thing is obvious, however, and that is, regardless of which young man or both was dealer, the dealer was there in that location to profit from a local demand. It was a spot known to many someones. Suggesting to me that the stone-throwing neighbors might have some problems or problem children of their own.

It is discomforting if true that Bissett was back smiling and kissing babies on the campaign trail the next morning. You never know whether this sort of display is courage or gallows bravado. The private longer term will tell the story of what the Bissetts do to help their son's overall rehabilitation, and whether it succeeds. However, it is a gross, punitive overreaction to suggest them negligent of their family and unfit for public service on the basis of being proven imperfect parents who raised a fallible son.

Cold reality - 2010-07-29 00:46:56

I believe tha when we excuse criminal behavior and turn their family into the victims that we do a disservice to our drug free teens who work to succeed in life despite the pressures of life. There are many many more drug free teens than those who have drug issues. Beverly Beach and all communities in edgewater for that matter, do unfortunately have to deal with teens dealing and using drugs. thankfully dealers on private beaches are few and far between. When drug free mantras are propsed, some of the frequent commentors assume that you are bashing the parents or nto being fair and they say" what if it happened to you" Well I raised 5 successful children who do not do drugs and I have grandchildren who have stayed clean throughout their highschool and college years. In all my years of parenting and grandparenting, I found that most families that have drug and alcohol abuse and/or criminal behavioral issues do have truly troubled family lives. I dont know if the Bissetts are part of the 95% or the 5% who have decent families. It is less painful for all of us to assume they truly are good parents, but are they really part of that 5%? I dont see how.

Community divided - 2010-07-28 16:02:36

The drug debate regarding tollerance of use and responsibility of family with teens on drugs is always intense. The heart of opposing views is usually over the type of drug, where they were caught (driving a vehicle, public playground, private residence, etc.) and/or how responsible are the parents for their teen's actions. How the police deal with it, how the arrest is reported and what the parent's response was is the measure by which people respond. In most drug cases where the substance was found on the person they are guilty. The arrest was reported as factual and in brief by both the Capital and by a local online newsfeed. People are responding to the facts presented and the response of the family, period. Drugs are surrounded by other crimes. They cost the taxpayers money, resources, and their freedom and rights. The price we all are paying over this drug dealer and his friend is large. Beverly Beach has a black mark on its reputation as a clean safe community. One commented that the Bissett boy frequents the beach, as if this is comforting to the parents raising a family there? I want my tax money repaid and Edgewater's reputation restored. The parent's responsibility and accountability in this matter should not be generalized. This arrest is unique. They are not the average family: no one in politics has a normal life - it is a public one. This involves a politician that has been willing to give up everything for the campaign. Had he been more successful with this in the past, I may give him a pass on it all, but will sacrificing the family and the community be worth another loss in the end? I doubt it. Let him doublespeak like all politicians do when caught in hypocritical acts. We know it is all just empty words, but at least he will show he is the man of the family. Right now, they are just the embarrasment of Edgewater.

Hopefully there will be an actual statement from them coming out soon. I'd also like to hear what is said. I think it is important to address the supporters and the public at large regarding this, since it has been made public in the paper.
You also have to wonder, though, what was the question the reporter actually asked before the statement was given. Was it: "Would you like to give a statement regarding your sons arrest?" or maybe it was as direct as, "In light of your sons arrest, do you intend to continue the campaign?"
It's hard to tell from the vague amount of information given in the blurb what is really going on. I think everyone has a right to be upset about the drugs in the community. Believe me, I am. I just think we need to wait for more information before we really have enough to go on. The event and it's aftermath both at home for the boy and in the campaign are much broader than what we can see in this article.
Hopefully something will come out real soon from the Bissetts.

Bringing it on theirselves - 2010-07-28 14:28:32

I believe alot of the commenting, negitive or otherwise is based on the not so forthcomming response from the Bisset's. The only statement from them addressing this issue with their son is how it will not affect their candidacies, therefore suggesting what is important and what is not. Had a response been offered like (for instance) the O'Malley's offered when their daughter was passed out may have had a better or different impact on their parenting. the less said is not alway the best defense. To date, I still haven't read, or heard any response to this, what's up with that anyway?? Does anyone not believe that had they addressed this as a parent and not a candidate, there wouldn't be such negitive comments toward them? It's never to late, the Bisset's need step up and offer something to the public showing a responsibility toward their child and how they intend to handle it.

Walter - 2010-07-28 12:57:39

I'm just curious to know why you feel my "ranting" is "over the edge"?
Because I made a point that the Bissett's parenting should not be in question. Because I feel that it's not fair to judge a parent based on their childrens indescretions?
Every post I have left has been in direct relation to someone bashing me for making a clear observation of the above.
Have I no right to defend myself? You just find that to be "ranting" and "over the edge".
Everyone is calling for an explanation from the family and the police when I would be willing to bet, given the tone of the comments left here, it would not be good enough. Just based on what I see here, some are only willing to voice their opinion and not justify their reasoning.
You are right about one thing, Nurse Brenna and I would make a great team cleaning up the community. That is why I invited her, myself, to the community meetings. We need more community members who want to make change, not just talk aboout it. Some just criticize and never show up to make that difference. I hope that Nurse Brenna does show. She will see that I'm not much of a raving lunatic, but just a Mom who wants to make a difference in my small community.
Support your statement, Walter. Show me where I merely ranted. Otherwise, just appreciate my opinion for what it is and I'll try to remember to do the same.

I had the first word on this and may I please have the last. For the record i was born in washington d/c which is why i put it on my name. I live in Beverly Beach and use to work at the beach when it was open. I remember when Lou's was Gatts. I shopped at Dave's corner. Shopped at the beach store by Clover Lea. My point is i have been in Mayo all my life. I never meant for this to be a is Phil good or bad or do you support him or not. I meant to just say something to someone that i care about. I knew Phil's father, still know his mother and brother and i meant to show support for him as a man. Not as a politician. Please no more comments about Phil. If you support him as a man, say so. You can believe his heart is broken over this incident and he will do the right thing. Please give him time. I started this by saying i supported him. I was wrong how i worded it. I hurt for him. We all want the same thing in the beach. Phil's brother lives there. It's natural for his son to visit. It's not fair to Phil what some of these comments are turning to. Let's go see what our own kids and grandkids are doing and leave Phil alone for a while. We'll all have our chance again. This story will be back in the news again and we can all see where we are when it comes back. God bless everyone who commented because you cared enough to comment. You care about our community. I Just Don't Get It - 2010-07-28 09:49:09

Go ahead, bash me too! It's always easier to bash someone than to support them. I know. What you don't really want to admit is that I'm right. I've said nothing on here that could come back to bite me. Can you say the same?

Somehow each new peron manages to twist my words to make me out to be a supporter of drug dealers in our community. I really don't know how many times I can address this before it's just beating a dead horse. I don't support drug dealers, I support parents who are being called bad parents simply because their kid did something stupid (and illegal). I'm not going to be that person who says, "oh you're a bad parent, you didn't do anything to stop it, you enabled him by letting him live there" only to one day (and God, I pray it doesn't happen) have my kid do something dumb and have the finger pointed at me. "Hey, remember when you bashed that parent for his kids actions....well, look at you now". So, if all you are looking for is someone to agree with your irrational opinions on good parenting, then by all means, bash me, cuz you're not gonna find that here with me.
However, you cannot call me a bad citizen for it either, you don't know what I have done for my community. I'm actually quite active in it. But I am careful not to confuse politics and family matters because I still believe that they are two separate things. When you come home from being a nurse, you get to be a Mom. When Phil Bissett comes home from being a politician, why can't he just get to be a Dad and a husband? Why can't the two be addressed as separate?
And, yup! I'm Republican!
I would watch your words. It's a community opinion forum, NOT a boxing ring. Some things you've said could be considered libelous.

buzzed driving is drunk driving - 2010-07-28 00:59:50

while checking my email on yahoo I noticed an ad by the dept of trans that has a video of a teenage boy smoking a joint and then it says "buzzed driving is drunk driving" I thought of this bissett police story immediately. Everyone gets the why the residents are so upset but the bissetts and their very few but very opinionated namecalling fans. I voted for him in the mid nineties and then said no to bissett after he stopped showing up to vote the following election year (absent for over 2oo some votes if I recall). It seems like the vote was not all he we as absent for. The bissetts response comment in the article brought politics into the comments discussion, not the commentors. The bissetts made the connection between the arrest and the campaign for people to consider by talking only about their campaign. why else would an experienced polition make such a comment. Ok robin and phil. Many of us have considered it and find it unacceptable. You got your polling data.

Nurse Brenna for Beverly Beach Pres - 2010-07-28 00:35:45

I just got home from my graveyard shift as a nurse and was appauled by the way that bissett fanatic was beating up on that nurse. Its creepy enough coming home late night, let alone wondering if the peninsula drug dealer is going to be hanging around, all high on drugs with his buddies. I am past president of my community and can assure all of you concerned Edgewater residents that normal communities DO indeed hold vigilant to speak out against drugs being sold and consumed in their community parks. Crofton has had its teenage criminal issues. We need more people speaking out against it and tell those who treat the criminals like victims to stand down. We are the victims, We have a right to a safe community. We have a criminal politician representing us at the state level in Crofton. I understand the passion in wanting to keep them out of office, out of power, and out of our republican party. Bissetts and McKoneys make all of us look bad. Their liberal woe is me excuse makers and blind defenders are a regretable part of how these types get into office. I hope there are enough normal people to keep the bad guys off the november ballot. I hope others will join me in restoring integrety to the republican party by voting no to these people. McConkey broke the law while in office and Bissett cant even follow a simple sign law while trying to get into office. What laws will he break while there? Keep vigilant Edgewater. We may not agree how best to solve the Bissett problem or what type of parents they are, but I know what type of politicians they are: rule breakers. I dont want them holding vigilance on my community. Ill take Nurse Brenna any day. Hard working, honest family lady.

what did I miss - 2010-07-27 23:53:24

I just got back from vacation and read all these comments. Wow! I missed quite an event apparently. I applaud many of the community residents for being brave enough to stand up against the local Bissett political hacks and criminal guardians. It is brave to say no to drugs in your community. There is always going to be a Gray neighbor calling anyone who disagrees with them self righteous That is why they namecall, categorizing people as if concerns and questions were threatening. Thank goodness most people dont find the Bissett family powerful, although reading the ranting Gray person a new person around the block may get that impression. A lot of his supporters are edgy because he has lost 3 elections in a row - 4 in total. You are right that making the criminal the victim is a liberal, wierd thing to do. Thanks for caring about your new community. It is refreshing. Welcome to Edgewater. Bandwagon to follow soon...

outside looking in - 2010-07-27 23:16:28

I am guilty of being new to the community. Ive never seen a bandwagon, nor a welcome wagon when I moved in. I just want to be safe, raise my kids and I believe that they should have at least made mention of concern for the community. Such evil thoughts. You keep mentioning how their campaign is being ruined by questioning, concerned neighbors like me. I have never heard of a community rallying behind a drug dealer's family before. I did not bash anyone. As a resident I have a right to ask questions and have an opinion that says no to drugs. Making the assailant the victim is a liberal thing and I am a republican who believes in personal responsibility, so I guess your chart is coming in handy. The gray person, whomever they really are apparently is very close to the family. You should respect your neighbors right to have concerns and questions about crime in their neighborhood. An excessive response of two comments in a row is, I agree a good reason for you to cease the rage. Is this normal politics around here? Bash the new voter? Your history with the family is obviously strong. I only know what I saw on the guy's website when I googled him. I looked her up on the republican committee local area website and what I have read in the paper thus far. I did notice that the Phil bissett guy broke the law and put his signs up weeks in advance of the other candidates. My first view of his name was driving by a sign he posted illegally earlier than the law permits. Ive never seen him at beverly beach events since I have been here. I dont need to make a decision based on his sons arrest. I need only to drive down the road to see the family is a bunch of lawbreakers. I doubt Im the only undecided republican given there are 5 people signed up for the campaign he is in and several in hers.

Nurse Brenna... - 2010-07-27 22:30:53

UGH! I feel like a broken record. No one is beating up the community.

Did you know that it is I and a select few other Beverly Beach neighbors who are working with the county to get the roads your children walk and ride bikes on safer through traffic calming. You think I care so little? I work with the Beverly Beach Community Association to make fun family activities for your kids and mine in this community. You don't know me. You judge me because I stand up for Mr. Bissett while others beat him down? You call me nothing more than a namecaller? What makes you any better?

You, yourself admit you've been in our community for 2 years. Yet you jump on the bandwagon of those who call Mr. Bissett a bad person because of his sons indescretions. You should only hope that your own children don't one day grow up to jump on the bandwagon too, only with peers who drink or do drugs. Then will you blame yourself? Call yourself a bad parent? Or will you hope that the community would rally around you in understand that kids make mistakes and support you as you try to rectify those mistakes and make them better people in the process?

This forum has only served as proof that it is easy to voice your negative opinions of someone when you are high on your horse. I hope you never find yourself in need of support and understanding during a difficult time, you might find that the community points its finger at you instead. You certainly know nothing of the people you have spoken so negatively of, Nurse Brenna.

new to edgewater - 2010-07-27 21:46:39

Having moved to Beverly Beach just 2 years ago, I have no "history" good or bad with the Bissett family like the other commentators. I think anyone that would sell drugs at a family park the enemy of the community. "boys will be boys" is not valid. I do shift work as a nurse and come home in the middle of the night. This story is frightening to me. yes, someone is around at 2am - me -! What is even more frightening is watching the politician's family "fans and supporters" turn the community into the enemy. Drugs are a very emotional issue. Parents desire to protect their young children from drug activity is normal. Beverly Beach Park is not highly trafficed teen hangout. We dont have public or street parking for the beach/park area . I was so very disappointed that there was no reaching out to our community on the Bissett family part. The only thing they wanted the readers to know was they are still candidates. I guess everyone that questions this family's public record is a fingerpointer or hypocrit? Is this family so powerful around here? Why cant the Bissettcandidates speak to the citizens concerns instead of sending attackers to take out the concerned citizens of the neighborhood on a blog feed? I want to know of all of the candidates in our area, local, state and federal what they are going to do to keep this Bissett boy and his friend out of our neighborhood. I am willing to volunteer my time, and resources to see it does not happen again. I have spoken to others and they are as well. We dont expect the police to do this alone. The namecallers like Gray and the others: please stop beating up our neighborhood. You are defending the wrong victims. We are, not the bissetts. I think voters should know what these politicians values and anti-crime plan is for us. We know what one two of them are going to do - campaign. What about the others out there? Will you defend your own at the expense of our community?

Fire Man - 2010-07-27 21:22:13

To say that today's youth lacks a moral compass and "are almost all without exception self center and selfish" is a vague generalization that I find very upsetting. You point to a few kids that have had trouble recently that do lack a moral compass and label a whole generation? Thats like saying the last generation of teenagers are all psychopaths because of Columbine and other school shooting at that time. Do you work with closely with teenagers? I doubt it, I coach at a county high school and a majority of them are good kids, there are a few knuckleheads (like with every generation), and a few are exceptional young men who pride themselves on service to the community and being role models for younger men on the team. So when you say that the whole generation are bad apples I know for a fact that it is irresponsible to say and untrue.

Perfect Parents? Probably Not. - 2010-07-27 20:06:41

I totally agree. I was talking with my husband about it today. Our boys are not quite 2 and just turned 3. They're good boys. Most of them are at their age. They are raised with Christian values and rules and consequences for their actions. However, one day they will leave Mommy and Daddy Land for the real world with real-world influences and we can only pray that the core values we've instilled will withstand societal pressure and peer pressure.
I just can't stand to see this family bashed because they are in the public eye while their teenager made a teenage mistake. If we made this forum open only to perfect parents, it would be a quiet forum.
People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. It's a tough enough world, when your fellow man is beat down, as a Christian, it's our job to help them back up.
Phil, this too, shall pass!

Kids do stupid stuff, lord knows I did things that I am sure my father did not approve of and somethings that probably affected his job, but in the end I turned out OK and so did my dad. They are things my kids have done and will do in the future, will I be disappointed, yes but I will love them anyway.

Well, what do you want me to tell ya Pat? You want me to be like everyone else on the board today talking like they know exaclty what happened? Like they had some close, personal knowledge of the events that took place and the goings on in Phil Bissett's house at night?
I can't do it. And neither can anyone else. Because the truth is no one knows all the facts. You get a one-sided view from the police, you get a one-sided view from the accused, you get a one-sided view from the public. One day the public will know all the facts, they won't be secret anymore. But until then, no one can say that they know what the deal is. Because they don't.
It's very sad when people assume that they know everything about someone. It really just discredits them in the end.

Finger Pointers and Hypocrites - 2010-07-27 19:06:23

The pure fact of the matter is this:
If you didn't support Phil Bissett before, you probably aren't going to support him now. So making all of these assumptions and accusations of bad parenting and corruption are just ridiculous attempts to sway his supporters (of which I am one, in case that wasn't blatantly obvious).
There are facts in this case, of which the public has no knowledge. However, I look forward to the upcoming release of all of this information that will put all of your accusations to rest.
I'll say it again, to ASSUME makes an ASS out of U and ME. I urge those who do not have all the facts to hold your tongue. You don't want to be a donkey.

4/ They released them despite pending trial (police favors)

That is a BROAD assumption. I questioned the police about releasing a truly habitual offender (car theft, assault, drugs) and was told that the only reason they hold someone is if they are a flight risk or show an imminent danger to themselves or society.

So in essence,I was told, you could be arrested 100 times and as long as it was not a violent crime, showed up for all the hearings and reported to jail if needed, and basically played by the rules...they were not going to hold you for trial.

Certainly the possession of pot with the intent to distribute does not warrant a holdover.

Calling his release a favor is a stretch.

Missing the real issue - 2010-07-27 17:37:16

Most of these comments seem to be missing the real issue with the youth these days. They are almost without exception entirely self-center and selfish. They dont seem to understand that actions have consequences, are without shame, and have no respect for their parents or themselves. To me these young men are really no different than the ones that were caught throwing rocks at random people in Severna Park the other day.

While I dont like what these guys did (selling or using drugs in a park). I really dont like what has happened to the moral compass in the younger generation.

Read the article. Read most of the comments below. Seems like what should be important to the voters is the following: 1/ The teens were DEALING drugs (yes there is a difference between smoking a j and dealing it) 2/ They were at a private beach/playground (violated the community) 3/ The Bissett boy was already pending trial for drugs (at least one prior) 4/ They released them despite pending trial (police favors) 5/ They are experienced politicians (family understands public life)6/ They chose to put their lives in public when they chose to run for public office (personal decision of theirs) 7/Phil Bissett was just endorced by the Police (back to the favors thing - also questionable judgement by police/integrety of their endorcements) 8/The Bissett boy still lives with his parents (responsibility)9/ Phil Bissett's platform for his campaign is built on family, public safety, and preventing driving while under influence of controlled substances (hypocritical)10/His only statement to the public post arrest was that he and his wife will not even so much as pause their campaign over this issue (the trigger of many comments below). End Summary of relevant facts. question to Bissetts: Do they think the voters are that stupid? The supporters commenting here do.

Seesh, all this coverage over kids getting busted with pot at the age of 19?

It would be interesting to see a poll done by The Capital on here about the people who have commented on this article asking whether or not they ever smoked pot on a beach at the age of 19, but didn't get caught. Talk about hypocrites...did we all forget out teen years?

Not that I condone it, I don't use drugs. His son is an idiot for trespassing on the beach and using drugs, but lets get a grip people, it was pot, not crack cocaine or heroin.

"...The fact he got arrested twice for it in a 3 month timeframe tells me and any other drug rehab professiona..." "Any Other" was where you went wrong, then.
ANYWAY...if you want to talk about falsely accusing, then let's address the fact that I never once said pot was ok. I would not condone my children smoking pot and I don't think anyone else's should either. HOWEVER, the fact of the matter is that alot of kids do, as evidenced by your own child. DOES that make you a bad parent? No, I don't think so. I think that you handled it very well and I commend you for it. The difference is that you put your case out here in a public forum for everyone to read, and perhaps the Bissetts are dealing with it behind closed doors. That is the ONLY difference I see so far. Why? Because we don't know what goes on in other people's homes. So we cannot make false accusations about their parenting skills, enabling, blah, blah, blah. We cannot. We can only agree to disagree at this point, I suppose.

READ your own words before you accuse, ADAMS! Sheesh!

you have declared young Bissett to have a drug problem, no where have I seen that he is drug addled, but this could just be a business venture for him. Frankly I find that to be more troubling than being a user. 2 oz. of pot and a scale indicates that dealing is more his thing. We would not be having a discussion if he had been pulled over and had a joint in the car.

cant read for real - 2010-07-27 11:57:29

I am not a professional. I never said so. If you read ALL the words in each sentence you would realize you are falsly accusing AGAIN. Putting your family thru public campaigns each and every election and then losing all those times has to be enormous pressure and embarrassment for their kids. "dad lost again" tatooed on their foreheads. I can see why the boy is resorting to illegal drug use. I guess you are ok with pot, but most people are not and your irrational conclusions are telling that you dont represent most people's opinion. I suggest you do some homework on drug addiction. For the record, I drove my 21 year old son to rehab the first time I caught him doing drugs. We had the willpower to say no before he became a criminal drug dealer. He thanks us each day and we thank God we made the best choice for our family. Know before you speak Gray.

YIKES! - 2010-07-27 11:39:54

PI- It's clear to see from the last line in your comment that you have no respect for Mr. Bissett...but it's also clear that your problem with him running for election has less to do with him "enabling" his son than it does with some personal issue with him being self-centered. So let's just let that issue die, shall we?

As we've seen in the past, most candidates for government have skeletons in their closet. Clinton was an adulterer, Nixon was a theif...blah, blah, blah...so Bissett's 19-year-old son smokes a little pot....is that any different REALLY than the candidate itself being a theif or an adulterer?

And PLEASE don't call yourself a professional again, it's insulting. Or perhaps you consider yourself a professional because your kid was into drugs for so long. I don't really know, but if I were to call you a bad parent because your child did drugs, would that be a fair assumption? What if your child left rehab and smoked pot again (gasp!)? Would that mean you enabled him?

The fact of the matter is that you and I DON'T know what goes on behind those Bissett Family doors, but I can tell you this: anyone running for candidacy is NOT likely to be intentionally enabling their kids to commit crime. It is more likely that the issue is being, and has been initially addressed behind closed doors where we can't see. Since everyone is all fired up about how his life has become a public issue, it is probably smarter that they did it that way, too.
It not only makes folks sound unintelligent when they make assumptions, it is also unfair. To assume makes an ASS out of U and ME. Ever heard that?

Ms Gray. I stated in my comment that I had a son who had drug use/addiction problems. Using marajuana is a drug problem. I have worked with professionals and know what enabling is for real. By not insisting he attend rehab, they continue to enable his habit. The fact he got arrested twice for it in a 3 month timeframe tells me and any other drug rehab professional that there really is a drug addiction issue here. The family's denial and desire to write this off as all teens do this is unacceptable of anyone who claims to have the leadership charisma and values to represent people as an elected official. the boy Companioning with dealers is even more offensive and telling of the fact there is a really big problem in their family. The best way for them to keep this problem a private matter is to step away from public life until they have their family drug illness under control. ps..The boy with the drug problem should be the focus, not the dad with the really big self-centered ego waving on the south river bridge at me.

little Bissett is an adult, he will have to fend for himself. But this is not an isolated incident for young Bissett. Maybe Robin and Phil should put aside their quest for politics and focus on helping their child. I left a job I loved but took me away from my family but when a medical problem presented itself with a family member I changed the situation from being about me and my desires to help my family.

MY TURN! - 2010-07-27 10:41:20

I'll try to do this without letting anyone feel left out. Since you all seem to have an opinion of me, let me tell you about my opinions of you:

PI Adams, there is enabling and there is support. Do you have children? If they screw up ar you gonna kick them out on the street, or are you going to work hard to help them? How do you know that the Bissetts haven't been trying to help their son instead of your accusation of just enabling him?

Mayo Missy- I don't advise the Bissetts, they are adults, they don't need my advice. Nor yours.

Elizabeth- drug abuse/ selling/ using/ etc. is ALWAYS a problem, not just on the off-season. I just find it sad that the boy wasn't putting his fathers reputation first instead of his own agenda. That is all.

Mike and Anthony....AMEN! Too many people have their heads stuck in this article and forget that the Bissetts are people too. Your problem is with the Bissett BOY, not the Bissett family. Don't confuse the two....it's wrong and it's judgemental. You do NOT know all the facts. None of us really do.

personal responsibility - 2010-07-27 08:34:04

Based on the more recent postings, it does seem possible that the Bissetts have more issues than the article tells. This episode appears to be a normal course for this family. When you ignore your problems they get worse. The family should have taken care of their personal family drug problems before signing up for election day. I guess they figured their judicial and police connections will keep them protected from their problems. I really hope someone looks into the police endorcement and make certain there is no preferences being given out. Its about time people stop defending bissetts neglegence and criminal behavior and make them take personal responsibility for their family and their deceptive past. The kids the bissetts claim to care abouton their website and work with are the same ones being threatened by their son's drug abuse and drug dealing. Hypocrits deserve the truth in their face. Its the only way to get them to shut up.

Judge Not ! - 2010-07-27 01:07:05

I see alot of Bissetts bashing here, but how many of you actually know the Bissett family. How many know the young Bissett, beside from this article. How many have a perfect family.I find it iroinic that people on here from Mayo and Edgewater say they don't want drugs in their neighborhood and drugs should be tolerated. So I'am certain if they see drugs being sold they would report it as would most people. Drugs are bad period.

On the other hand a few years back a hardworking African American woman and child moved to the neighborhood and was harrassed from day one. She also had her home vandalized. How many watched out of their windows and said nothing. Where were all the stand-up citizens then. Why didn't they call the police and report that the womans house was vandalized. Why didn't they voice strongly, behavior such as that will not be tolerated in our neighborhood. Crime and drugs are by-products of each other.

name calling response - 2010-07-26 22:47:23

I dont understand the karma comment from the family's friend, as excellent rated postings had opposing views. The Bissetts day 4 of silence is telling and the busybodies at least make a logical case and dont resort to namecalling like Mike Phillips does. I dont find rehabilitation a sanctimonious reply. I think reconsidering their campaign is reasonable and looking into the police endorcement issue is the duty of the media and citizens. They made their lives public, not the people on this site. If you really want to be their friend, Mike of Edgewater, you will realize that comments like Adams on addiction shared her personal experience with everyone to help their family. How is that sanctimonious or beign a busy body. She was talking from the heart as to how they can solve their personal family issues. Mike of Edgewater is accurate in one of his statements: the charges are serious and they could be in jail. Had they gotten him the drug rehab he needed sooner and stop beign in denial, he probably would not have a rap sheet. As a christian I forgive them and pray they have good guidance. As a fellow parent I enpathize with their parenting circumstance. As a voter and resident of this community, I will NOT vote for Bissetts. It just simply is not necessary with so many other names out there. They are not entitled to our vote . Sorry, Mike of Edgewater, hard to take your bullying and namecalling seriously.

Sanctimonious Busybodies - 2010-07-26 21:31:24

Some times I long for the good "ole" days when we didnt have the technology that gives sanctimonious busybodies the ability to puff themselves and criticize their neighbors anonymously from behind their computers.

For people to inject politics into this incident is not too surprising, just a sad commentary on the state of civility in American in the 21st century. I missed the election rule that said a candidate and his and her children must be perfect like Jesus Christ. By that standard we must ask Joe Biden to step down because his daughter was arrested last year on possession of cocaine charges.

The kids screwed up like most kids do to varying degrees at one time or another. These are serious charges so let the kids go through the system and face the consequences of their actions and hope they learn the right lessons and can make positive changes. As for their parents, how about a bit of empathy for them instead of a public crucifixion.

Those little Karma ratings after each public comment are symbolic in my opinion of what may happen to all of those casting negative aspersions.

Gray commented that the timing could not have been worse and they were supposed to behave during the campaign. This implies that there is no problem with their drug activities during the campaign off season?
Im sorry but the expectation of most voters for someone seeking public office is that their house is in order most the time, not just during campaign season. There are many ways the bissetts can serve the community and I hope they do, but not on council or party committee. This election is too important to be turned in an episode of COPS or BAD BOYS.

addiction - 2010-07-26 13:49:05

I am amazed at the lack of understanding about the cycle of drug addiction. Ms. Gray from Edgewater should know that the parents are enabling their son to continue to use these drugs. Marajuana is a real drug that destroys families each and every day. They should have taken him to rehab after the first arrest in May. They are not bad parents for raising a child that fell prey to drugs. They are bad parents for failing to get him the help he needs. I dont care if the child is 9, 19 or 39. A loving family must do whatever it takes to get their addict help. They obviously care at some level to continue to house him, but they now must make the decision to support him for real -- rehab -- or to continue to enable his habit and criminal behavior. Ms. Gray said this is getting in the way of the parents campaigning. I think the campaigning is getting in the way of saving their son from a life of crime. I know this first hand. My son was a teenage addict and when we finally got out of denial and into rehabilitation we learned what gross mistakes we were making and how to fix them. It took a lot of sessions with all family members attending. Recovery is not an easy road, but we accepted our responsibility, have paid the community back and now have a whole family again. They cant possibly have enough time to work, campaign and get their son the help he needs. Maybe if the Bissetts had real friends and supporters around them they would pause their campaign for a moment and see the bigger picture of hope and responsibility. My prayers continue that they do the right thing. It is not too late.

Repeat Offense - 2010-07-26 11:29:12

The bissett teen was already arrested for a similar charge back in May. He should be waiting for his court dates in jail to keep he and his drug dealing friends out of our communities. Most parents would have sent their teen straight to rehab. Instead they let him live at their house, selling drugs and tormenting the communities of Edgewater. This is not typical behavior of teenagers nor of parents. Making excuses for the family is an insult to the community they invaded and perpetuded their drug crimes at. The family owes the residents an apology and compensation for the tax payer dollars spent to continuously arrest their criminal son. Most importantly they owe us the respect of stepping aside and skipping this election cycle. I know campaigning must be a hard habit to break (otherwise why would they keep running only to lose), but they cant seriously think anyone would want them representing them on either the Republican leadership committee or the council.

I agree that you can love and bring your children up the best way you know how, but ultimately, and unfortunately, society will determine a childs future. It's very sad.

I know the Bissett family. They are not bad people. They are just as everyday as you and I. It's unfortunate that the election has to be overshadowed by the misconduct of the son. He should have been more supportive of his Dad and not gotten into trouble, at least for the sake of his campaign. It is sad, however, like a lot of families who go through this, they will overcome it.
It is best to be supportive during this time. It could be your child someday, no matter how good of a parent you are.

I read about the police endorcement also. That other commentor is right. Something seems odd. Bissett teen gets lessor charges than the other teen. I hope that the police will reevaluate their endorcement. The community needs protected from predatorial drug dealers. This is an issue of police integrety. There needs to be more information on this issue. Someone should look into this. Dealers often keep the drugs and tools of their trade at their home. Why werent their houses searched? Why lessor charges for the police endorced candidate's son? Of course we have a republican in the exec's office. Is this really a coincidence? I think not. Free to roam - 2010-07-26 01:27:02

That Bissett boy has been in trouble before. Why these parents keep supporting his bad behavior will always be a mystery to me. What is not a mystery is that he is now not just a drug user but a drug dealer. That is right. We have a drug dealer living at the Bissett house. Stop candy coating the facts. He drove the drugs to the beach and his friend was selling it. By the sounds of it they were only half way to completing their sales for the night. Let me make one thing perfectly clear for those not in district 7 -- Mayo does not have a drug problem. Mayo has a Bissett problem. We need to make it go away. How anyone can defend or ignore dealing drugs on a playground is beyond my comprehension.Maybe we should start our own campaign to say no to drugs by saying no to bissett. If nothing else winning our campaign would make the community safer.

drug deals in our community - 2010-07-26 00:57:46

I will give the supporters of Bissett credit - they are loyal. Problem is they dont seem to live in District 7. How are you able to vote for Phil from Severna Park, DC or annapolis? Or does his police endorcement give him voter fraud privleges. Where are all of these supporters from his district at? All I see above are concerned residents commenting about drugs being dealt at their community playground. The kids deserve a trial and the community deserves proper representatives. Neither Bissett is proper. Their actions, their response to this, and their past make them the wrong choice. Leaving their name on the ballot may make their egos feel better but it will not bring the vote in. I hear something falling...its the republican party's integrety and duty to those of us who really want the party to be successful. Bissetts clearly put themselves above all. I hope the police unions do the right thing and say no to cutting any deals for the Bissett boy and his friend. We have a right to justice and a right to say no to drugs in our community and drugs being sold in at our park.

more than one bissett deal around - 2010-07-26 00:33:32

When I first read the article I had questioned the quick response of the Bissetts to return so fast to their campaigns. Bissetts gave the voters an arrogant response to the arrest. They are hiding from the sad realities of their lives with a drug addict. There is no good way to tell a story about drug deals at the local playground. Nor is there any real way to express in words our disappointment in the Bissetts. Its not a parenting issue, its a quality of leadership and representation issue. Some people just dont get it. Well I do and I say thumbs down to Robin and Phil.

Thank goodness Annapolis residents cant vote in district 7. What an illogical perspective. The last annap. one posting calls legitimate discussion on factual events moronic. There is nothing moronic about wanting to keep drugs out of their community and people of questionable character out of office. I applaud the Edgewater area for rejecting the politicizing of drugs on their beach as if it is expected and should be tolerated at any level. Drug users need rehab; drug dealers need jailtime and the Bissetts need to reevaluate their priorities in life and perhaps stay home come election day. For the sake of that community and for the sake of their political party, stand aside. You've had your chances, and plenty of them.

He's got my vote! - 2010-07-25 20:32:54

After reading some of the moronic posts here alluding to the Bissetts 'lack of parenting' I am flabbergasted! You can be the best parents in the world, but still have kids that are going to do whatever they want. I'll definitely support him now.

sometimes a spade is a spade - 2010-07-25 12:53:37

Kids do drugs because they have a bad family life at home oftentimes. Their public response to their son's arrest confirms their lack of support for their son's drug addiction. Yes, the son has a drug problem. To see Phil Bissett sign waving on the south river bridge the very next day (friday pm rush hour) sickened me. As a parent I could not imagine doing anything but getting the boy the rehab he deserves. To campaign aggressively like that right afterwards... shame on them as parents and as candidates. What a loser family.

The fix is in - 2010-07-25 12:43:37

This is a prime example about why the voters are so angry this year. Police endorce a guy who's son is selling drugs in community parks while they are campaigning to be given more political power. Then the Capital buries the article as the last comment in a police beat report. I guess the media and police are willing to give the Bissetts a pass. Dont bet the voters will. I am a voter and I say go away Bissett family. We dont want your kind of politics in our community. We dont need your kind of service in our community. We will be better served if you just stayed retired from politics.

Bigger Picture - 2010-07-25 11:43:11

There is a bigger picture here, folks. Say what you will about political parties, candidates and voting. The fact remains that there is obviously a market for the drugs in this area. Times have changed...the drug use is every where, even in Mayo. These boys will have to answer for what they did, but somewhere along the way, we as a community have failed them. This is not just their issues, it is all of ours. I would be willing to bet, they weren't the only people in the park that night. Be thankful if you do not have to deal with substance abuse in your family.

Family response - 2010-07-25 10:29:35

The family's response is what is giving me pause. So brief and matter of fact. I was taken back by it. The real story seems more complicated than the news story, and I wont comment on innocense or guilt of the two young adults. Their parent's response regretably reflects most on their true priorities - campaigning. They left out family and community.

I don't smoke pot and I don't appreciate your assertion that I do. I don't condone drug use or drug dealing; I asked for perspective. This is obviously an isolated incident as none of the Mayo residents have issued any battle cries about drug dealing in their community previously. This single incident is hardly a harbinger of doom, gloom, and drugs for your community. They weren't toting guns or breaking into cars or houses. The offenders will be appropriately punished and life in your idyllic community will go on.

drugs and crime - 2010-07-25 09:20:52

Checking back in I was appaulled by some who think that its ok for drug dealers to be at the private community playground if no kids are around or its the middle of the night. Drug dealers bring with them petty crime, such as break ins, vadalism, and theft. I guess severna park would be ok letting these kids hang out at their private community areas? I think not. Stop defending drug dealers. You can smoke your pot at the playground in Severna Park, but stay far away from Mayo. We actually care about our community and our children.

Not so serious - 2010-07-25 09:12:47

When you run for public office and focus on kids and family to such a level as he does on his website, you must accept responsibility to uphold those statements. Quote from his website: "Phil and his wife, Robin, despite their many public roles, make time with family a top priority....spending quality family time with their children. Phil is a family man and always puts family first." No one expects perfection from any parent nor their children. HOWEVER, if you are running to represent the people, you must be honest in who your family really is and you must be a role model for the families you represent. There is a higher standard for public officials than Joe the Plummer. Especially a candidate that wants us to vote for him because of his success as a parent and community leader. They have disappointed their supporters, their political party, Mayo communities and let down their children.

Seriously... - 2010-07-25 08:36:46

Can we please stop with the "Oh my God, the children!!!!" responses. Yes they were on a playground...at 2 AM. They weren't there in the middle of the day while kids were playing. There are a lot of assumptions being made and judgements and condemnations being handed down without any of the facts being known. And before the flaming starts, I'm not in favor of drugs or drug trafficking. But a little perspective is in order. According to the article, they were sitting at a picnic table. It doesn't say that the police witnessed a drug transaction or drug use. And for heaven's sake, it was pot, not coke or heroin. Yes it's still an illegal drug but it's hardly a Class 1 narcotic.

And as for the comment about the Bissetts failing miserably at parenting, that's patently ridiculous. Everyone makes mistakes and the Bissett's son is most certainly not the first teenager to have a brush with the law, nor will he be the last.

Which book is it that says, "Judge not, lest ye be judged?"

I noticed someone mentioned he got a police union endorcement. The other person mentioned the bissett boy got lesser charges. Any connection? Highly probable that strings are being pulled. If bissett boy drove them to the PRIVATE community park then he drove the drugs into the community. These werent two boys partying on the weekend. These were two drug dealers during the work week selling drugs in our community. I wonder if the backpack was ever in the Bissett parent's house. He does live there afterall. Did they search the boys' houses? Well I guess that endorcement paid off

Mary Jones/ Mayo - 2010-07-24 18:40:22

I'am sure the majority of people in D.C. hate drug trafficing just as much as you. Drugs are "everywhere" even in the small communities of Mayo, could be across the street from you or next to you no one know's until someone get busted.

If you really want to know about drugs or crime in Mayo contact your local police station. My bet is that you will be amazed.

To often we hear (that doesn't happen in my neighborhood). Only to find out later that it does.

I have never associated the Bissett name with community. Ive only seen him sign waving....never at the shelters, never at the schools, never at meetings or in council chambers. You can live here your whole life and never know what the people REALLY think. He may have served well in the 90's, but what has he been doing the last 3 years. Obviously it wasnt spending quality time with his kids or in the community. Just another politician family. Typical response from them. Figures.

I find it interesting that Madden was charged with 1 felony count of possession with intent to distribute, in addition to 3 lesser charges. Bissett was only charged with 2 misdemeanor counts of simple possession of marijuana and trespassing. I suppose the scale and paraphernalia were only found on Madden.

personal judgement - 2010-07-24 10:23:51

Is this the same Bissett that lost all those other elections? If it is, I say why break a trend? He needs to understand that the voters cast votes based on values and good judgement and character. From what I am reading below, this family lacks that and the voters already told them stay home many times over. I guess they didnt get the message and now their son is a drug user - most of which are addicts and criminals. To not even take pause in the campaign for this personal issue make me and I suspect the voters to take pause at the legitimacy of his candidacy. He has a right to be a candidate, but his judgement is once again wrong.

Once again the republican party is showing off their finest law breakers for the upcoming election. Like father like son. Bissett breaks our sign laws and puts his signs up early. He broke the hacket act by taking money while being a state employee. With republicans like this on the ballot, the democratic candidates should have no problem winning. I encourage them to keep campaigning. They are doing the work for us. Even Gary Greenup, a republican state senator's spouse called bissett a law breaker in his editorial piece. It was accurate. The whole family is the poster of what the republicans represent. Three cheers for the republicans for guarenteeing victory for the local democrats.

I guess if you live in DC you just dont understand how unsettling drug trafficing in your back yard can be. Mayo is a group of small communities with many children. THEY GOT BUSTED AT A PLAYGROUND!!!!!DC elects drug addicts but Mayo does not have to. There are other good candidates on the ballot and they have a right to stay on it as well. Our residents have enough brains hopefully to say no to drugs and enablers. Go back to DC, Jimmy.

Law Breakers cost money - 2010-07-24 09:22:46

The best way for Bissett to promote smaller government is to keep his kids at home and out of trouble. You cant have smaller government with drug criminals roaming our community beaches. Private communities have to often pay for security to keep these thugs off OUR private beaches. Our taxes paid for the arresting officer's salary, equipment, etc. to remove them from someone elses property. Even if they didnt have the drugs the officer claims they did, they were trespassing on private property in the middle of the night. We wouldnt need so many police if laws were not broken. Giving teens a pass is why we have so much crime and corruption. Teach them early that its ok to break the law and this is what you get.

I agree that if that bissett boy is still living at their house, they are responsible for him. If Brennan's comment is accurate, then the police union/FOP have a responsibility to recind that endorcement. Doing drugs and selling them at a playground not a typical teenage crime. Where is the accountability? Very disturbing police report.

These teens were at a children's playground and private community beach selling and using drugs. They are criminals that deserve to be put in jail. There is no place in Mayo for drug dealers and drug users. Their parents are enablers for letting these repeat offenders continue to live at their house. The Privacy of the matter ended when they trespassed on my community's PRIVATE beach and playground.

Drug users cost tax payers money. If he didnt have mom and dad enabling his habit and taking care of his food and shelter he would have to go to work and not have time for doing drugs at parks where our children play. It all comes down to personal responsibility. The son is an adult, correct?

Yes, the son is an adult, but the address is the same as the parents, so it is the family's issue to deal with. I havent decided if the arrest affects my voting decision, but how quickly the bissetts were to affirm their continuing to campaign is very questionable. He was just arrested yesterday. I think good christian families would have taken a couple of days to pray on it/consult with their clergy or perhaps even a drug counselor on the affect their campaigns might have on their son's ability to rehabilitate.

Reflection on Parents - 2010-07-23 16:36:20

This isn't a private matter, now is it? How can it not "affect their candidacies".

The Bissetts failed miserably at the most important job in life..... parenting! Not raising their son to be a respectable, law abiding citizen was a "dis-service" to all, especially their son.

Parenting is a selfless act, not always so about politics. A loss may force the Bissetts to spend quality time with their kids, but it looks like it's too late.
