KENT ISLAND

Bicyclist hit

A 14-year-old Queen Anne's County boy is in critical condition at Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore after being hit by a car while riding a bike in Stevensville Sunday night.

State police said the boy was riding on Thompson Creek Road in front of the Food Lion store around 9 p.m. when a car driven by Tara Riley, 23, of Stevensville struck the teen.

Police said Riley had missed the turn for the Food Lion entrance and pulled to the shoulder of the road so she could turn at the next entrance, where she hit the victim head-on.

The boy was riding against traffic, police said, adding that he was wearing dark clothing and did not have a light on the bicycle. He did have a helmet on, police said.

Riley was not injured.

Police ask anyone who saw the accident to call Maryland State Police at the Centreville Barrack at 410-758-1101.

ANNAPOLIS AREA

Mid hospitalized

A Naval Academy upperclassman was transported yesterday to Anne Arundel Medical Center in Parole for observation and treatment after possibly taking too much of an unspecified medication.

Academy spokesman Cmdr. Joe Carpenter said the incident happened around noon, and the midshipman, a male upperclassman, was in Bancroft Hall, the academy's dormitory, at the time.

First responders transported the midshipman to AAMC, Carpenter said. The midshipman remained in the hospital overnight.

The 4,400-member Brigade of Midshipmen returned to campus on Friday following summer training cruises, and classes started today.

Hammer attack

A man was assaulted with a hammer and robbed just outside Annapolis on Friday night, county police said.

The man was walking home in the 600 block of Admiral Drive around 10 p.m. when two men approached him.

One of the men struck him in the arm with a hammer and the second man snatched his cell phone and wallet. He suffered minor injuries but refused medical treatment, police said.

Police searched the area using K-9 and aviation units, but could not find the robbers.

They are black. One is 5 feet 8 inches tall, with short hair, and was wearing a dark brown shirt. The second man is 6 feet tall, with short hair.

Stoppers copped

Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. reported that two steel stopper fittings, worth $1,900 each, were stolen over the weekend from a construction site on Windell Avenue, city police said.

The 6-inch fittings, used in large gas line construction, were hidden under a tarp just outside the construction gates when workers left the site on Friday. Yesterday morning the fittings were gone, police said.

Police checked with Mid-Atlantic Recycling, a local construction materials recycler, but did not find the missing fittings.

An investigation continues.

SEVERNA PARK

Tree trimmer hurt

An employee of a tree-trimming company was injured while working in Severna Park yesterday morning, county Fire Department officials said.

The 45-year-old man was working in the 300 block of Steven Way in the Berrywood community around 11 a.m. when he fell out of a tree. Firefighters said he fell 15 feet to the ground.

He suffered serious injuries that are not considered life threatening and was taken by ambulance to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

Further details were not available.

Party's over

Hundreds of dollars worth of wine, jewelry and other items were stolen from a home in Severna Park during a house party thrown by the owners' teenage daughter while they were out of town, county police said.

The 17-year-old girl admitted to having several large parties at the home, on Hollyberry Road, between July 19 and 23, police said.

When her parents returned from an out-of-town trip, they discovered several items missing, including five bottles of wine, a gold Naval Academy class ring with an aquamarine stone, a Dyson DC25 ball vacuum, a Samsung cell phone, an HDMI cable and a white Apple iPod. The theft was reported Aug. 1. The girl told police she would tell her parents and officers where the items are - if she ever finds out.

SOUTH COUNTY

Tiki statues swiped

Two tiki statues were stolen from outside of an Edgewater business early Saturday morning, county police said.

An employee of Chesapeake Spas Inc. at 2806 Solomons Island Road discovered the theft from the front of the store around 9 a.m.

Surveillance footage shows a GMC Jimmy sport utility vehicle with a trailer pulling into the parking lot around 5:45 a.m. A white man, between 40 and 45 years old, wearing light shorts and a light colored T-shirt, is seen getting out of the vehicle. A second man also is seen exiting the GMC.

The men picked up the two statues and loaded them onto the trailer before pulling away.

The statues are worth $725 and $650.

Maybe the parents should take out an ad in the Capital for free babysitting services. I hear that works really well :-)
