Delegation votes to change school board selection

The county's House delegation voted this morning to change the way the school board is selected, requiring the appointed members to stand for a "competency" election after their first term.

The bill also would do away with a cumbersome nominating convention process, instead using a county commission made up of representatives from the community.

"They're held to public accountability," House Speaker Michael E. Busch, D-Annapolis, told the delegation before the 13-1 vote. "They are on the ballot for the next election and stand for competency."
