Democratic lawmakers started a controversial probe into firing practices in state government yesterday with carefully-worded statements about an "open-minded and fair" inquiry, a pledge Republicans are saying they will be watching as the committee proceeds.
"We wish to stress we are not an investigatory committee," said Del. Adrienne Jones, D-Baltimore County, co-chairman of the Special Committee on State Employee Rights and Protections. "We were not formed with the purpose of conducting a witch hunt."
The committee, which will formally decide exactly how to proceed on Thursday, will have subpoena powers if personnel records...
