Lawmakers face choice of school board bills

The more than 20-year debate over the lack of voter power in the appointments of county school board members is being heard again in the halls of the State House.

Two competing county school board reform bills have been introduced this General Assembly session, with supporters of both bills making their cases yesterday before the Senate Education, Health and Environmental Affairs Committee in Annapolis.

"This has been an intractable issue for a long time," said County Executive John R. Leopold.

Anne Arundel County is one of only five jurisdictions among 24 in Maryland that does not have elected school board members....
