Bill would deny driver's licenses for illegals

A conservative voting block of state senators aligned against a ban on assault weapons might also back a local lawmaker's bill to prohibit driver's licenses for illegal immigrants.

Sen. Janet Greenip, R-Crofton, is sponsoring legislation currently before the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee that would require driver's license applicants to prove they're lawfully present in the United States. Sens. Ed DeGrange, Sr., D-Glen Burnie, and Bryan Simonaire, R-Pasadena, are co-sponsors of the measure.

Maryland has to be tougher in doling out its licenses to avoid jeopardizing its security, Ms. Greenip told the committee...
