Maryland has officially become the first state to mandate a living wage for government contracts even though opinion is still divided on whether it will help business.
Gov. Martin O'Malley signed the bill yesterday during a ceremony in which 203 bills became law. The living wage legislation will take effect on Oct. 1.
"We are going to treat you in a fair and just and decent way so you will be able to put food on your family's table for your day of labor," Mr. O'Malley said. "It is the right thing to do. It is the fair thing to do."
