The county school board yesterday passed a budget that includes 341 new positions and an expanded college prep program, but falls short of what officials said is needed to give students the best public education possible.
"We are in a dire financial situation," said board Vice President Eugene Peterson. "We're setting up winners and losers by not fully funding the education program."
The $871.1 million spending plan for fiscal 2008 includes higher fees for outdoor education and a mandate to turn thermostats down in the winter and up in the summer. But students won't have to pay a proposed $25 fee to take part in extracurricular...
