Government-funded health insurance for 20,000 Anne Arundel County children is at risk as a deadline approaches for Congress to reauthorize the program.
And even if Congress agrees on a new version of the State Children's Health Insurance Program by the Sept. 30 expiration date, President Bush has threatened a veto if the program is expanded.
An expansion is just what Congress is considering.
The House version that passed on Aug. 1 would boost funding from $25 billion to $75 billion over five years. The Senate version would raise funding to $60 billion over five years.
