The State Senate last week moved closer to repealing a law that requires homeowners to apply for a longstanding tax credit, a hurdle some lawmakers said may be costing some taxpayers thousands of dollars.
Passed last year, the law requires owners of homes that are reassessed to apply for the Homestead Property Tax Credit, which in the past automatically capped property-tax increases.
Senate Bill 239, co-sponsored by Ed DeGrange Sr., D-Glen Burnie, and Bryan Simonaire, R-Pasadena, passed a second reading Thursday. Similar legislation in the House of Delegates is awaiting committee action.
