'09 election may overhaul City HallPublished 07/21/08
The structure of the city's government could be dramatically different come next November with the arrival of new leadership and possibly a less powerful mayor. Everything from police enforcement to the direction of city finances could be completely transformed starting in 2009. Even with the election of mayor and all the aldermen nearly 16 months away, potential candidates are already pushing their proposals for change. "In terms of nuts and bolts, I think the city is run efficiently and effectively," Mr. Cohen said. "But because of high-profile headaches like the Market House and the sidewalk tax, I think an outsider candidate might have a better chance (at being elected)." Other than some very major problems, Cohen thinks the city is run effectively.
