Anne Arundel tweaks immigration policy

Published 12/07/08

County police have extended the length of time they will hold undocumented immigrants wanted by federal authorities.

Even though it is expected to be an infrequent occurrence, the new policy marks the first time Anne Arundel has agreed to hold federal detainees in county jails.

County Executive John R. Leopold touted the change as part of his ongoing effort to help federal authorities crack down on undocumented immigrants.

The new policy will hold wanted immigrants up to two days. It applies to people who are not facing local charges, but come to the attention of local police for other reasons. Most commonly, these...

Forgot to Mention - 2008-12-10 00:49:14

Sorry, I forgot to mention the illegal immigrants from Annapolis painting who painted my house a few years ago. I was amazed that you were able to complete the entire interior of the house in only 1 day (which included moving furniture).

Thanks to Illegals! - 2008-12-10 00:47:16

First, I would like to thank all of the illegal immigrants who have chosen Anne Arundel County as their new home. I really appreciate the fact that my lawn is the envy of the neighborhood and my pregnant wife doesn't have to do as much cleaning as she used to. Second, I would like to specifically thank the illegal immigrants who clean the children's play area at the Annapolis mall. The area is kept sparkling clean for my children. Thank you very much how your hard work. If you have any friends or family in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, or Mexico please let them know that there are still many more jobs in Anne Arundel County.

Good for AA - 2008-12-09 06:09:38

I, for one, am glad that AA had decided to adopt this two-day holdover policy. In the past, it has been a "catch and release" environment for LEO's in regards to illegal immigrants. It has been a running joke that in order for ICE to be interested, there usually had to be more than 10+ illegals involved. Even if the "onsies and twosies" had warrants and deportation orders hanging over their heads ICE wouldn't take them thereby forcing AACP and sheriffs office to let them go...ICE couldn't make it in time or it wasn't worth their effort were two frequent excuses I encountered. This is a good step in the right direction if only better documentation of the undocumented arises from it. At least we might be able to hold ourselves and ICE more accountable.

Disingenuous - 2008-12-08 21:42:52

Brian? You?re the one railing against CASA. What group of people does CASA support? People from Central America. Those people are what? Hispanic. I read here over and over that they are all criminals just by their very presence in this country. Well folks, even President Bush has pushed for giving many of these people legal status. So supposing he had succeeded? With a stroke of the pen he could have made thousand of Hispanics - and others - LEGAL immigrants. So what then? My guess is that ever one of you would find another evil to attach to them and another reason to send them back from where they came. I?m actually not ready to throw open the doors. Whether immigrants are legal or not their presence is a mixed bag. Some are hardened criminals; others become criminals out of desperation, most are just hardworking people who want to provide for their families. They do accept jobs many don?t want. On the other hand the case can be made that they?re driving down wages for the working class. While they may be taking government services they pay taxes every time they buy something. It?s a difficult equation that most oversimplified. And to Sarah?I agree that there are some pretty angry people here but you must be angry yourself to call others here ?ignorant rednecks.?

Oh and..... - 2008-12-08 20:05:24

Sarah C, not ONE person who posted a comment used the word "Hispanic". In my opinion, THAT is a rather "ignorant redneck" assumption to make, that all illegals are Hispanic, don't ya think?

WE'RE losers?!!! How dare you. I work hard. I pay my taxes. And I am a legal, law-abiding citizen. I have every right to be angry at the fact that Maryland is becoming a sanctuary state for illegal aliens. They evade our taxes. They take advantage of our taxpayer funded services such as emergency health care and public school education. They piss on our laws simply by entering this country illegally. But WE'RE the losers? I think not. I am sick and tired of MY taxes being used to aid and abet illegal aliens in Maryland. How dare you attempt to discredit and insult the legal, hard-working citizens of Maryland for voicing our opinions about those who are here illegally, without regard to the laws of this land.

Not Law Abiding - 2008-12-08 12:29:23

When are the "Liberals" going to wake up!!! "Generally Law Abiding"? Does the words ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT tell you anything? It is a proven fact that they are the largest culprits of stolen identities. Let one of the "Liberals" have their identity stolen or an MS13 member rape or kill a family member and see how quick their views change.
I am Union and used to be a democrat but, thanks to the good work of elected officials like Leopold, I am now voting Republican. Keep Up the Good Work Leopold!!!

It's O'Malley's fault.. - 2008-12-08 09:23:25

He continues to support illegal aliens in Maryland. As a matter of fact, due to our struggling economy, O'Malley has just created a new group called the "Maryland Council for New Americans". It is intended to help immigrants find jobs in our community. What that means is your friends, neighbors, and family members will continue to struggle in this economy and will continue to lose jobs while O'Malley uses our tax dollars to create an organization that helps illegal immigrants to find jobs in Maryland. O'Malley also is a staunch supporter of CASA of Maryland, yet another organization funded by our tax dollars that aids and abets illegal aliens in Maryland.

Mr O'Brien - 2008-12-07 16:36:52

They're not being sent back to their home country for a broken taillight, they're being sent back because they broke the law to get into our country illegally. They are not now, nor have they ever been immigrants. Immigrants are those that are in our country with permission. Please learn the difference !!!!

Better than nothing! - 2008-12-07 14:04:12

The article incorrectly refers to these border-hopping cockroaches as 'immigrants.' Pathetic.

It's a shame that these miscreants have to commit other crimes before they are detained for removal.

Illegal aliens are criminals and parasites, one and all. Their very presence here and practically everything they do on U. S. soil is illegal. They need to be ferreted out, rounded up like cattle, punished for their numerous crimes, then booted back to whence they snuck in from with such extreme prejudice that they will never, ever think of violating our sovereignty again. Enough is enough.

Step in right direction.. - 2008-12-07 11:23:54

Hopefully this will give ICE the time needed to get to these criminals within that 48 hour period, and hopefully deport them immediately after. And give me a break....Kerry O'Brien (legal manager for CASA) stated this policy is "cracking down on generally law-abiding undocumented immigrants". Uh, excuse me, but if they are "undocumented" how can they be "law-abiding"? Anyone here in this country without documentation is here illegally. It's time for Maryland to step up to the plate and start protecting the legal, taxpaying citizens of this state and stop aiding and abetting illegal aliens in Maryland.
