Delegates stung by state song

Published 02/17/09

"Maryland, My Maryland," the state song which "spurns the Northern scum," stings the legislators, too, even if some don't know the words.

"Actually, I really have never paid a lot of attention to the words," said Del. Pamela Beidle, D-Linthicum, who introduced a bill Friday in the House to change the lyrics of the state song to pay tribute to Maryland rather than express "Confederate sympathies."

She said letters of protest from fourth grade students at Glen Burnie Park Elementary School opened her eyes to the song's bias.

The lyrics are from a poem written by James Ryder...

Maryland, Oh My Maryland - 2009-02-27 03:43:17

When Randall wrote this it was true! Marylanders were shot down in the street and their Chief Justice Taney thrown in prison. The people weren't allowed to decide.

Americans refuse to confront their true history. If you were to try it again the same would happen today, you slaves of the empire would be Shot down in cold blood.

Gov. Grist of Florida tried this too over our State Song SWANEE. These politicians are currying favor and kissing butt.

poor 4th graders product of government schooling.

Civil War Part Deux - 2009-02-22 17:37:48

Yeah, I was kinda surprised at the lyrics. Anyhoo, the Army song used to mention caissons, it doesn't nowadays because the Army doesn't use 'em to pull artillery pieces around anymore. And when up in Gettysburg, check out The Dog House where you can get a hot dog with a particular state's condiments...Maryland's comes plain 'cause the state couldn't really make up its mind what side it was on...hahhahah. Personally I like the Wisconsin dog with cheddar cheese and sauerkraut (YOU BETCHA!). And a parting shot...a little change never hurt no one....

You lost the Civil War - 2009-02-22 10:27:08

Get over it!

This is from the Daughters of the Confederacy web site:
....."I am a member of The United Daughters of the Confederacy because I feel it would greatly please my ancestor to know that I am a member. It would please him to know that I appreciate what he did and delight his soldier love to know that I do not consider the cause which he held so dear to be lost or forgotten......"

What is wrong with these busy body racialists? They are still fighting the Civil war! Using these Confederate lovers logic, Germans who fought in WW2 should raise the swastika flags and lament the loss of the Third Reich.

move on Biedle - 2009-02-20 10:24:22

Biedle needs to work on new legislation and / or song about how the "slaves" were sold into slavery by their own people. Leave the song alone.

interesting! - 2009-02-19 18:55:13

Maryland was 'an' in-between state. They were a part of the Union, but still allowed to have slaves (there were others as well). At first, Lincoln did not want slavery spreading any further than where it was (i.e. states that did not have slaves would not be allowed to change the rule, and no slavery in new American territories).....Although I don't particularly care for the words in this song, there are FAR more important things to be concerned with. This, to me, is a total non factor!

Good Grief - 2009-02-19 10:10:18

The delegate was enlightened by letters from fourth graders in Glen Burnie. Imagine what would happen if 5th graders sent her letters.

Tom - 2009-02-19 09:49:26

You are correct MD was not a Confederate state. However the only reason it didn?t join was there was a deal struck between the state and the Federal Gov that allowed slave owners to keep their slaves. If not D.C. would have fallen into enemy hands by default. That?s why any old Southerner will tell you there are no good cities north of Baltimore. As for our State song, it?s part of our history leave it a lone and fix the budget.

I hope that you really don't rely on Wikipedia for facts about anything as it is a user generated database, for the most part, able to be edited by anyone. Although, I do agree, anyone who thinks Maryland was a Confederate State is pretty much a moron. Wasn't it called the "in-between state"?

what? - 2009-02-18 18:50:30

I really hate getting involved in these tough guy comment debates, but one point "As far I know Maryland is still south of mason Dixon line, which would make it a confederate state" MD was absolutely never a Confederate state or part of the Confederacy. Before you try to teach someone a history lesson..read up!!

"adapt like our Forefathers"

"Why not just bulldoze over America"

I'm not supporting this waste of time bill by any stretch, but Becky, are you suggesting our fore fathers came here and just "fit in". They killed most of the native americans (who didnt speak english either). The cut down the forests, strip mined the mountains, and created a completely new world. Is that what you're suggesting new immigrants should do?

Yes, and take "Under God" out of the Pledge of Allegiance and change the National Anthem while you're at it. Life was what it was and is what it is and I am very proud that America has come so far. Not being of the Prejudice sort, this could make one so. We do have BET, Black History Month and signs in Spanish and every other language now appearing in America. Like it here, then adapt like our Forefathers. Want to change America to suit you, go somewhere else. The last time I looked we all have freedom's to say, think and do most everything we want, those freedom's afforded to us by our military men and women. Why not just bulldoze over America, our Great Nation that welcome's all with open arms. Those that the tax paying citizens of this Country support. Oh, never Mind. God will.

Is there nothing that is left alone as part of history. This is a prime example of " politically correct " run rampant, plus this delegate should be paying attention to the job she was elected to do, which obviously she is not.
