Federal engineers questioned Bay Bridge bolts' integrityPublished 06/28/09
Some federal transportation engineers questioned the integrity of the bolts holding Jersey barriers onto the eastbound span of the Bay Bridge in the aftermath of last year's fatal crash, according to Federal Highway Administration documents obtained by The Capital under the Freedom of Information Act.

State officials installed some temporary safety features on the railings to strengthen them and are scheduled to start installing permanent fixes Monday. Two engineers discussed in e-mails whether the internal U-bolts - some of which were found to be corroded after a tractor-trailer crashed through the Jersey barriers last August in a historic accident - were adequate since they were reused during a renovation more than 20 years ago and not given a new epoxy coating at that...
