Union stands against state furloughs, salary cuts

Union representatives are holding the line against more furloughs or salary cuts for state workers as Gov. Martin O'Malley searches for a second round of painful budget cuts by Labor Day.

Following a Board of Public Works meeting in Annapolis yesterday that saw more than $280 million slashed from state spending, Patrick Moran, the director of the state branch of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, said the government needs to look outside of workers' pockets.

O'Malley is planning to bring more than $400 million of additional cuts before the board this summer to close a $700 million...
