A state panel appears poised to approve a license for slot machines at Arundel Mills mall in Hanover after hearing a report yesterday that the project will contribute hundreds of millions of dollars to the economy.

The Video Lottery Facility Location Committee - which had two commissioners absent during a meeting in Annapolis - tabled a motion to approve Cordish Cos.' slots plan until all of its members are present.

The vote could occur before a Dec. 7 meeting where the County Council will decide whether to establish zoning for the gambling facility, another necessary step in the labyrinthine process.

Overly Optimistic Projections - 2009-11-16 22:03:26

Seems like whatever projections Cordish comes up with are accepted as probable. Personally I don't think these projections are realistic, and I'd bet anyone lunch that five years from now, the county and state will NOT be collecting $347.6 million per year as projected, per the article. THAT is nearly a million in taxes a day. And this, from an addition in the back parking lot at my local mall. I can't believe that an average of 20,000 gamblers per day will drop several hundred dollars into the slots. Am I the only one? The location isn't nice enough to entice big spenders, nor large crowds. I bet revenue will be barely half of the projected. Expect lots of stories about young kids wondering the mall whilst their parents are increasing Anne Arundel's tax base.

Douglas you misspoke in you statement about fighting for all AA County residents. You are not fighting for me and I've been an AA County resident all my life. That seems too be a major problem in this county and even the state.People trying too speak for other people.Maybe next time you should rephrase.

Every Day more information is revea - 2009-11-16 00:02:25

Today, the state approved slots for Arundel Mills Mall. And today, we learned "slots definition expanded to include poker machines and any other machines that don't involve humans are permitted under def. of slots. Leopold is supposed to first protect the citizens of AA County. Arundel Mills is successful family venue. Now, we hear the County isn't worried about "repecting" the covenants on the MALL property. What about the liquor licenses for Arundel Mills Casino?? It seems in other Casino operations, liquor is served to the patrons while they gamble. Oh, and with all its gambline revenues why does Nevada have one of the highest "homeless" populations in the country?? Unemployment is also high in Nevada (13.3%), how come?? We need Laurel race track to be a 2nd successful venue instead of destroying established neighborhoods, a safe family shopping venue and a Regional Mall allowed as part of "smart growth" policies.

Slots and Residents - 2009-11-15 17:01:38

Folks in the Arundel Mills area are glad that Laurel residents are finally re-engaged on the slots issue. We have been fighting alone for the rights of all AA County residents that will be impacted by future slots facilities. Not only will the proposed rezoning bill allow slots at Arundel Mills, but the next facility will likely be at the Laurel track. Every AA County resident should be fighting these bills, because your neighborhood might be next. Visit www.stopslotsatamm.com and get the facts.

The Facts Are Clear - 2009-11-13 16:16:01

The facts are clear, gaming belongs at the proposed Arundel Mills site. As one of the largest malls in Maryland Arundel Mills has both the land and infrastructure to support an establishment like that proposed in THE ONLY VALID BID submitted to-date.

Not happening - 2009-11-13 16:03:13

I will bet anyone we will never see slots in AA County. It wont matter where they try to put them someone is gonna whine. You could put it on a boat in the middle of the bay and someone would whine about it.Lets send them to another county is all AA County wants to do.Lets just say heck with it and not even have them in Maryland.I'll just keep going to other states too play.To heck with giving Maryland anymore of my money.I already give them state taxes with my check and then pay 6% sales tax.Aay Maryland.
