Some of the options officials are putting out for consideration include reversible lanes that can accommodate more traffic, the addition of an eastbound lane and variable speed limits to improve traffic flow.

Block the view.... Why not move away?
Learn to drive, learn to merge, put down the phone, and drive. We DON'T need another suicide lane, 1 on the Bay Bridge is too many now. We NEED a NEW southern route ACROSS THE BAY, this too will divert traffic from the severn river bridge as well. This Bridge is already 50 years old and already has been added on to. It's too bad we've all been sleeping while our politicians spent (wasted) our money on frivolous projects for decades and now it's catching up..

Yes every one slows down on a bridge don't know why! And then they have to look at the view real bad in summer yes you see the cliff's and boat's but to most people they see about the same thing every day ,lets get real people who live here are the real tourist....If they want to complain why don't they get to work early it won't kill them and maybe have breakfast somewhere rather than on office time which most is on our tax payers dime!

Why do we have budget deficits? Because we spend money for studies for something we already know the answer to. Give me $50 and I could have told them the traffic has more than doubled in the last 29 years. Not exactly rocket science here.

Keep the foot on the gas! - 2009-12-13 06:55:25
My experience here is that the key problem is that drivers fail to maintain speed going up the bridge. Yes, there is some effect of additional vehicles merging from Rowe, but by far the the dominant issue is that it only takes a few people (or a big truck) to slow to 40 mph to cause a chain reaction backup, basically the same result as the "rubbernecking" problem. I say this because often you see the same backup going WEST on a busy Sunday with traffic coming back from the beach. When this happens you can clearly see it is not the effect of merging traffic (there is none). Bottom line, is that I am not sure there is anything that will practically help this problem, short of a complete redo, which would not happen. I'm just glad they put in the extra turn lane to exit on Rowe (where I get off) :-)

How bout starting by making the entrance lane from Rowe Blvd one lane? A BIG part of the problem is FIVE lanes going to three. How bout making it 4 into 3?

Thru lanes and merging lanes - 2009-12-12 15:57:49
What about making the left two lanes through lanes. With Entrances to the through lanes between 665 and rowe and after the bridge. That way the only real traffic on those right lanes is traffic getting off or on at Rowe and off or on at Ritchie highway. They could try this out fairly cheaply with signs, and movable barriers. Its easy to say "Hey, why dont the people get out of the right lane, so the people merging can have somewhere to get on." But its not solution based thinking. Why not try the through lane idea for a few weeks and see what happens. If not they could consider the Tapenzee Bridge style movable barrier Machine. Its wicked cool and runs twice a day I believe.

learn to merge - 2009-12-12 15:09:41
Blocking the view of the river would be a great start but at the end of the day the problem is people have forgotten how to merge! All the traffic that everybody is passing in the merge lane is caused by people who jump out in traffic at the first sight of an opening with out first getting up to speed! If they wre moving at same speed as traffic already moving on Rt. 50 when they joined the flow of traffic, behold,no traffic jam!Use the merge lane for what it was designed! There are no stop signs or red lights from 495 to the Bay Bridge,no reason for traffic to stop!!!

Just a thought - 2009-12-12 13:15:57
The true problem is not the bridge. It is the 5 lanes before the bridge and all the extra traffic added to the flow between 665 and the river. If people entering from Rowe would stop being in a big hurry and passing the traffic to get to the foot of the bridge and other people would allow space for people to merge the traffic would flow more smoothly.

Block the view - 2009-12-12 10:32:28
I know it won't alleviate all of the problems, but it seems that blocking the view of the Severn river would help. It's strange, but it seems that the traffic is worse when it is a nice sunny day. Once you are at the top of the bridge and heading down the speed of the traffic picks up.
