Tea Party rally targets incumbents, government spending

Capital Gazette Communications
Published 01/14/10

Hundreds of conservative Tea Party activists swooped into Annapolis last night on the first day of the 2010 legislative session, ostensibly to protest Maryland's economic woes and incumbent politicians' efforts to solve them.

Paul W. Gillespie — The Capital Hundreds of people crammed into Lawyers Mall last night to protest on a broad range of conservative issues. Busloads of people came from around the state to join the crowd.

But speakers at the rally that packed Lawyers Mall mentioned the economy just briefly. Many went to the podium to hit on other conservative hot-button issues like gerrymandering, illegal immigration, "government" health care, preserving the 10th Amendment, and cap-and-trade legislation.

But the most common theme of the evening was frustration with the status quo. It was a toss-up between...

An old man - 2010-01-16 14:01:15

I am 86 years old and i was helped by a good neighbor to the gathering. The people there , most were like me, were not concerned about political party affiliations.
Every person I spoke to had the same thing on their mind; out of control politicians who have stopped representing the people. It does not matter whether you are democrat or a republican or an independent. What matters is the fact that Washington has ruined you and your childrens and their childrens financial future. And they don't care. That is why we the people were gathered the other night.

I wish there were less republican vs democrat arguments and more "we the people" vs taxes and government control arguments. I agree with Bruce; nice to see people voicing their opinion that the government is getting out of control, and it IS getting way out of control. Way too many back door deals are taking place on the health care plan. It's becoming more and more apparent that the majority is not in favor of this program as the stealthy details are slowly surfacing. I could care less whether we have a democratic or republican driven government at this point, as long as the political motivation is left aside. Of course, this is just a pipe dream that will never happen.

Lets be Realistic..... - 2010-01-15 00:55:14

I've been a registered voter for 28 years and have never voted Democrat.

I don't own a gun,I don't hate Barack Obama,I do fear God because I am a Christian but on to my point.
Fact One:
We as Marylanders live in a state that has been under a Democratic stranglehold for ages and has the third highest taxes in the country. We have a 2 billion deficit (at least that what they keep telling us) and this state only has a population of 5.5 million which is less than the city of los Angeles Ca.Lets face it the math just doesn't add up.
Fact Two:
Robert Ehrlich was governor only 4 years and got the state back on the right track and the voters thanked him by voting him out.

My whole point is this. Tea parties and Rhetoric do not speak as loud as votes and realistically this state does not have enough registered republicans to vote out the criminals and restore order so we will continue to be under siege.

It's "Diversity" not Diveristy lol. You know in all of your posts I kind of get the feeling that you're some 11 year old kid on his dad's computer that just likes to play Devils advocate but it's all in good fun I suppose.

What contrast - 2010-01-14 17:00:20

I'm pleasantly surprised by how different this article is from the one that Hartley wrote. Thank you.

The right story here is that there were lots of regular joes and janes there last night that are tired of the government overstepping its bounds.

To Shubbie... were you there? Or are you just trying to paint a picture that the only people that were there were the ultra right wingnuts. (they WERE there, but they are just jumping on a band wagon, they aren't the leaders of this movement)

Honestly, who can argue with Americans voicing their opinions to their elected officials? We need more of that. Kudo's to these folks.

And for the nitwits who use these parties to preach and spew hate... you're part of the problem, please stay home and watch your television until you go numb.

Good night for a rally - 2010-01-14 14:45:24

It is an interesting diversity of concerns. it's good to see people out voicing there opinions. Some are concerned their benefits will be cut, others worried about government takeovers and some just enjoy the social aspect. These are tough times, the issues complex. One side against the other does not promote good governance, just separation. Maryland's 2010 budget is $500 million less than in 2007. We need to balance the state budget, wisely. Capital projects which enhance business opportunities improve our competitive edge. State expenditures are counter-cyclical, they help prime the pump in a recession. But should be properly managed to avoid waste.

Experienced Crowd Counters? - 2010-01-14 14:39:30

I rarely care about the petty crowd number spats between ideological opponents...but what exactly is an "experienced crowd counter?" Other than attending other events I mean? There are mathematical methodologies used by the US Park Service, among others, to ascertain crowd numbers. Do your Experienced Crowd Counters use these formulae?

So you think the organizers did not inflate the numbers in attendance like they did last summer at the US Capital. This right-wing rabble have nothing to offer but fear and hate. We have quite enough of that type of negativity in the world.

Per Baltimore Sun - 2010-01-14 12:56:47

"Several hundred anti-tax "Tea Party" protesters converged on a courtyard outside the governor's mansion"......

The announced attendance last night was 3,000. Apparently the party line fed to Maryland newspapers was a "few hundred".
