Residents, delegates rally for gun rights

They wore their holsters proudly on Lawyers Mall yesterday, but the group assembled wasn't storming the State House.

Lisa Beisel — The Capital Chad Albrecht of Glen Burnie displays his open holster at the gun rally held at Lawyers Mall yesterday. Protesters wore the empty holsters to represent the “statutory disarmament” of Marylanders because those who apply for concealed carry licenses have to meet strict standards to receive them.

The peaceful rally attracted about 75 people, many wearing empty holsters to protest the state's discretionary system of issuing gun permits.

"We're working an uphill battle here," said Paul Dembowski, president of Maryland Shall Issue, the gun rights group that organized the rally in Annapolis.

In 41 states, gun laws are worded so that the state "shall issue" gun permits to anyone unless they have a criminal history or mental illness. In Maryland, the law says the state...

Defensive gun use - 2010-02-01 17:32:48

Guns are used for self defense more than any liberal or anti-gunner will ever admit. there have been numerous studies that show a gun was used for self-defense up to 2.5 million times a year. Many of these cases of self defense were ones with multiple attackers. Look at how many states are actually Shall Issue instead of May Issue, as Maryland is, you will see those states don't have all the gunfights the anti's keep claiming will happen. The evidence is out there for people to look up instead of just parroting other peoples mantra's. Look it up, look at where it came from and look at the differences. Then think for yourself. I have no problem with someone not wanting to carry a gun but i have a real problem with others telling my i can't.

Marylands false sense of security - 2010-01-30 13:41:37

Please do not fall for this.

I have a permit to carry a gun in 37 other states. I do this because 15 yrs ago I was attacked while washing my car in my driveway
by some man that was "Bored" and wanted to "KICK SOMEONES A$$" from what he said to the police. I can not carry a gun in the state I reside in. It is beyond me why either of these things occur other than the laws in Maryland are not fair for respectful people and non-respectful people will kill for any stupid reason. He was BORED and wanted to fight?

The good feeling I have is that one day I will move from Maryland. I will carry my gun on me when possible in a state that allows it. I refuse to believe that the police and laws can stop someone that does not reason nor respect others. These people take our rights by attacking us and the legal system takes our rights because its easier to do this than have a policeman worry every time he makes a traffic stop.

I worry every time I walk out of my house. But, thanks to the NRA, I can now defend my self in my home again. Yes, in Maryland a short time ago you could not even defend yourself in your own home. Google the castle doctrine.

I refuse to defend a state that will not allow me to defend myself and my family.

It's our RIGHT to Carry. - 2010-01-26 10:05:20

I don't dispute nor criticize those that believe that guns are bad and should be controlled. Those individuals have been swayed by negative and bad information, or possibly personal conviction. However, I do take offense that some of those same individuals wish to impose their will upon others and have ALL individuals not possess concealed arms. This shouldn't even be a debate: The Second Amendment is CLEAR: "... shall not be infringed...". Period. I do not wish my RIGHT to be infringed any more than I wish to infringe on any other's right to free speach or freedom to practice religion!!! If the Constitution no longer applies, then Amend it (just like slavery was abolished via amendment), don't "interpret" it!!! I would also like to see those that oppose arms ownership to proudly post signs on their homes or wear on their lapels that they are "gun free"... if you are proud of it and preach it, show it!!! I haven't had one anti-arms individual take me up on that challenge -- their usual response is "but then the criminals would know I'm not armed!"... Duh... that's the point!! We afford you protection by our very desire and existence to carry!!!

Still Bad Idea - 2010-01-21 23:21:12

Gun are and will always be weapons, they are made to kill things. In the wrong hands they kill, in the right hands they kill and in unknowing hands they kill. I have used guns but have no need to carry a conceal weapon, this isnt the wild wild west or east for that matter. A knife can be a weapon but can also be a tool, true. What other than killing can a gun do Emmaline?

Gun Rights - 2010-01-20 14:01:11

As previously stated, crime has declined in all states that issue permits. Illegal are guns are already rampant on the streets. If hoods want them, they are easily accessable regardless of the laws. Drugs are illegal but they are everywhere. If a crack head knows anyone could be holding a weapon, they would think twice about pulling one on you or me.

not my issue - 2010-01-19 20:58:05

I have never felt the need to carry a gun, and most people have no desire to either. Good luck with your struggle Friends.

Tools - 2010-01-19 20:13:46

Indeed firearms are tools. They cannot become animated and do anything on their own.
A housewife uses a knife to cut meat or protect herself. A criminal uses the same tool to scare, intimidate or kill.

Denied a permit. - 2010-01-19 18:36:06

I applied for a permit but was denied because the person that shot me and threatened my life from the courtroom was locked up they thought. Turnd out he wasn't, he was back on the street!
A nefarios group of overseas thugs put out a Fatwa on my life.
Still no permit.

A friend told me a secret to getting a permit. It requires a phone call and a letter from a certain person or persons in the State House along with a campaign contribution to certain persons with a D beside their name.

Unfair? Certainly. Corrupt? You bet!

Broken system - 2010-01-19 18:10:17

The Troopers that (Rarely) issue permits follow the rules. The rules are so screwed up and convoluted it's impossible to get a permit. If you are lucky enough to get a permit the rules get worse IE you can be armed taking $ to the bank but as soon as you drop the $ in the night deposit you can no longer carry, you need to unload the firearm the second the cash drops in the slot.
You have to PROVE you've already been assaulted or threatened by a certain person or group before you can even be considered for a permit if you don't carry jewels, drugs or cash. If you do carry cash you might still be turned down because you don't carry enough money. Now just what is 'enough'?
The rest of Maryland firearm laws are worse. Simply transporting an unloaded firearm can get you jail time and does. You WILL lose your firearm even if you are not prosecuted.
It's time for Maryland to get with the program and issue permits or allow any law abiding citizen to carry a firearm for protection. My drivers license is good in all 50 states, my carry permit is good in 39 states...but not in Maryland.

Gun Rights - 2010-01-19 15:37:15

I initially believed in gun control, but the fact is moving from no issue (or in our case may issue) to shall issue has never been a bad move in any state thats done it... generally violent crime drops (some cases dramatically), and no state has ever repealed it. It wont make the acquisition of guns easier, so why not try it for 2-3 years, and see if it ends up saving lives?
