Strapped state seeks to raise millions from multistate lottery game which starts Sunday

Marylanders will be able to play Powerball beginning Sunday, joining millions of others in 31 states and Washington, D.C., in having the opportunity to plunk down a dollar or more for a slim chance to win a fortune.
But some think adding another lottery game will just cause those who can least afford it to spend more.
To stir up interest in the new game - which Maryland Lottery officials have added to the popular 12-state Mega Millions and the Maryland-only Multi-Match games of chance - the agency sent an employee dressed as a giant red Powerball to Annapolis Tuesday as part of a weeklong tour.

It's a wash - 2010-01-27 20:38:47
What the story failed to report is that Powerball and Mega Millions have agreed to let each member state to sell the other tickets. So what this means is Pennsylvania, Delaware and DC will all be able to start selling Mega Millions tickets, too. So, the people who crossed state lines to buy the other tickets can now buy them in their home state(or District). There might be some increase in spending, making the pots bigger, faster.
I currently buy both, but I only get one ticket for multiple drawings, to avoid the tempatation of buying more when the jackpot is high. Nothing will change for me, except I will feel safer buying the tickets where I live as opposed to where I had to get the Powerball tickets before.
