Councilmen said eliminating take-home cars for department heads and assistant department heads would save money - between $60,000 and $110,000 in a tight budget year.
But even as they turned over their keys, some of the department heads maintained that taking back the cars won't actually save any money.
"The cost of vehicles will still be borne by the county. The costs don't go away," said Fred Schram, chief of the county...

thats fine - 2010-07-07 16:38:36
I dont think ANYONE would argue that police presence in a neighborhood is a bad thing. Im just asking if anyone knows how their shift works...
IM wondering if EVERY police officer that lives in the county that drives a car during their shift, brings it home at the end of the day. And if they're allowed to drive it for personal reasons if they are not on duty...
and if they start their shift the second they walk out the door at home or if they have to go to "clock-in" somewhere...

I have no problem with the police taking their cars home. It could stop a crime and with them using them to drive around in again they are there to help.

Just curious - 2010-07-07 08:01:46
Not trying to start anything... but why do police officers take their cars home? Dont they have to start their shift at their station locations or headquarters? I see them parked in front of residences, seemingly, everywhere I turn.
I know most of them drive around all day anyway, but you would still save in the long run.

I never did get why certain State Positions had take home cars. I bet their gas is also paid for, and the insurance, and the parking (don't worry, they will just raise parking to cover the cost). I drive my car to work? Pay my own gas, etc....actually transportation to/from work has become one of my largest expenses...and the state pays this. Here is a place where we could find some waste... don't give up your salaries yet guys, hopefully you will join us common folk in paying what you should have been paying all along....

Why, Capital, Why? - 2010-07-06 17:55:27
Why is it journalistically significant to print the names of those using, and turning in their County vehicles, especially when they are non-elected employees? I can just see some psycho Hell-bent on a reprisal, Googling some chap's name b/c he used a County vehicle and the story may vulcanize in his head that the employee committed an injustice.

looks good/responding - 2010-07-06 17:09:28
Some of these 'worker bees' who respond in off hours are required to be on scene in a work issued vehicle. So driving to the fleet lot and then to the scene could waste valuable time...and added costs in compensation pay.

"...as long as the worker bees still have cars to respond ... in the middle of the night..."
If they lack sufficient transportation and they can not respond during off hours as their job might require, they need to resolve that issue or move on to another job.

Schram - 2010-07-02 21:55:27
What world does Schram live in?
"I don't think there's any savings because the vehicles will still be utilized," Schram said. "
If it saves $60,000 for personal mileage and the County can retire and sell some older cars because of it, how can he say there won't be any savings? No wonder government runs so inefficiently!
