Matthew Centrowitz isn't your typical high school athlete. The bashful 17-year-old has brought a Penn Relays record crowd of 39,166 fans to its feet, has won three straight state cross-country titles and is the fastest mile- and two-mile prep runner in the nation.
One of the country's top distance-running prospects has competed against professional, world-class runners on national television and the word "Olympics" has even been attached to his name.
But the Capital-Gazette Newspapers' Male Athlete of the Year will blush and look the other way when the topic of his dominance in cross-country or track comes up.
