Charlie Melesh wasn't even sure if he had won by the time he finally reached back to the edge of the pool. "I could see he was close to me," said Melesh. "As soon as I finished, I looked right to the board (to see who won)." The Annapolis sophomore not only won the 100-yard backstroke in 54.92 seconds, but captured the state record in the second-ever Maryland State 1A/2A/3A Championship in College Park. Melesh managed to beat Havre de Grace senior Jeff Riley, coincidentally the former record-holder, by about three-tenths of a second as his Panthers finished second overall on the boys side with 209 total...
