Football Roundup: Markiewicz ties Laramore record

Arundel football coach Chuck Markiewicz tied late Annapolis coach Al Laramore for most lifetime coaching victories in Anne Arundel County last night, as Arundel defeated Annapolis 20-19 in Gambrills.

The Wildcats sealed the victory when the defense stuffed an Annapolis 2-point conversion attempt in the game's final minutes.

"It was a great defensive effort," Markiewicz said. "We hadn't stopped them all night long, and we stopped (them) on the one-foot line. I'd say that's a big deal."

Markiewicz, now with 156 career wins, will go for the record next week when the Wildcats host Severna Park.

"If you do this long enough with good people, these are the kinds of things that happen," said Markiewicz, who was the head coach at North County prior to coming to Arundel. "We have good players, good coaches. I've been blessed and it's just a function of doing the right thing, I guess ... They say the harder you work, the luckier you get."

Junior quarterback Billy Cosh threw for two touchdowns, both to R.J. Harris, to lead the Arundel offense.

Annapolis' Lamont Smith ran for one touchdown and caught two scores from Craig Wilson.

The field at Annapolis High School is named for Laramore, who passed away in 1989.

"He wasn't only a great coach, he was a great man," Markiewicz said. "When I was coming up as a player, I looked up to him. He was an icon and has been in Anne Arundel County for a long time. I'm sure one of the reasons they played us so tough was that they didn't want that to happen against them."

OLD MILL 56, CHESAPEAKE 6: Junior Josh Furman racked up 102 yards rushing and scored three touchdowns, including one on a 69-yard run to lead the Patriots.

Senior quarterback Grant Enders completed 14 of 19 passes for 233 yards, including two touchdowns.

Junior Jason Clements was the recipient of a 12-yard strike from Enders. He also ran for 101 yards and two additional scores.

Old Mill head coach Damian Ferragamo was happy with his team's performance, but knows there are challenges ahead, including next week's clash with North County.

"We're happy to be where we are, but we understand there's a lot more work ahead of us," he said.

Josh Gross caught the other touchdown pass from Enders, a 35-yarder. Devonte Sanders caught four passes for 111 yards.

ST. MARY'S 24, CARDINAL GIBBONS 13: Senior Neill Lewnes had three touchdown runs, including a 63-yard er, to lead St. Mary's to a victory on the road.

Lewnes totaled 165 yards on the ground and senior Jason Gonos added 42 rushing yards.

"Neill has been consistent for us all year," said head coach Brad Best. "He's a real tough, hard-nosed runner."

Gonos made significant contributions on the defensive side of the ball as well, along with senior Charlie Buenaman and senior Justin Ely, according to Best.

St. Mary's improved to 3-1 in league play with the victory.

KENT ISLAND 32, WICOMICO 8: Junior Joey Kirby rushed for two scores and senior Erik Chandler added a third to lead the Buccanners to the victory.

The Buccaneers intercepted three passes and recorded two safeties, including one on the opening kickoff by Luke Baxter. Kirby added two interceptions and John Ricker also picked off a pass.

"Defensively, we played phenomenal," Kent Island coach Bryan Sofinowski said. "We absolutely shut them down. We were flying to the football."

Ben Schaffle completed five passes for 79 yards and one touchdown. Chandler racked up 170 yards on the ground, while Kirby contributed 101 yards rushing.

FRIENDS 36, AACS 28: The Quakers' ground game was anything but friendly, racking up 260 yards of offense. Freshman quarterback Chris Chick finished with 126 passing yards and two touchdowns for Annapolis Area. He also capped off two drives with one-yard touchdown runs.

In the first quarter, Chick connected on a 23 yard pass to Matt Soldano for the Eagles' first score. Soldano finished with six receptions for 66 yards and two touchdowns.
