Prep Roundup: Saints rally to win on penalty kicks

St. Mary's rallied from a two-goal deficit and edged Maryvale Prep, 3-2, on penalty kicks yesterday in girls soccer.

Colleen McGee was one of many heores for the Saints; her goal late in the regulation set up a scoreless overtime. After two scoreless sessions, Kayli Moore, Christian Edwards, Cara Deegan and Alli Roebel converted on penalty kicks to deliver St. Mary's the victory in the first round of the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference playoffs.

Lizzie Roebel made 15 saves to secure the Saints a meeting with No. 1 Archbishop Spalding on Monday.

BOYS SOCCER

GLENELG COUNTRY 4, ST. MARY'S 2: Sam Doub and Aaron Stewart scored goals, but the Saints couldn't overcome a four-goal, first-half deficit.

John Morgan assisted on Doub's goal, and Dylan Bonfigli contributed an assist on Stewart's score. St. Mary's Nick Hoffman made four saves.

AACS 1, SEVERN 0 (OT): Garrett Masters scored in overtime on an assist from Nate Schmidt as the Eagles defeated the Admirals. Eagles goalkeeper Bryan Butler made four saves.

Severn's Daniel Farley had seven saves.

GILMAN 4, ARCHBISHOP SPALDING 0: No other information was provided.

VOLLEYBALL

ST. MARY'S 3, ST. VINCENT PALLOTTI 1: Vanessa Volarich's team-leading 28 assists, 14 kills and nine aces helped the Saints (4-10) advance in the first round of the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference tournament over the visiting Panthers, 25-17, 25-22, 19-25, 25-14. Tricia Bigelow led St. Mary's with nine digs.

SPALDING BOYS, MOUNT CARMEL 0: Max Schroeder's 28 assists set a personal record as the Cavaliers (6-9) took out the Cougars in three games, 25-20, 25-18, 25-15. Bryan Somers had 12 digs and six kills, and Nik Vreeland added 14 digs and 10 kills. Zach Rombach had 19 digs, while Kameron Beans had 18 kills. Archbishop Spalding earned the third seed in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Assocation B Conference playoffs.
