S. Park sacks Glen Burnie

Published 10/24/09

All it took was a pair of big defensive plays for the Severna Park football team to get rolling last night against Glen Burnie.

With Glen Burnie deep in Severna Park territory and holding a 6-0 lead early in the second quarter, Severna Park senior linebacker Tyler Anderson sacked Glen Burnie quarterback Alix Gadow on consecutive plays to force a punt.

The Falcons responded with a 15-play, 85-yard touchdown drive that ate up almost eight minutes and took the lead for good en route to a 41-18 win at homecoming.

Anderson's sacks came after the Falcons' Kyle Zorn dropped a pass behind the line of scrimmage that Glen Burnie's A.J. Simms recovered to set up the Gophers' in scoring position.

The Falcons had struggled through the first quarter in falling behind and had to stop an earlier drive deep in their own territory when Hank Pridgen recovered a fumble.

"It would have been disappointing if they would have scored, but we've been through a lot this year and I think as a team we could have handled it," Anderson said.

Severna Park quarterback Ryan Faini's 3-yard touchdown run finished off the 85-yard drive, while Ed Bohns, Kyle Zorn, Adam Zinsmeister (four carries, 108 yards) and Dalton Wain all added touchdown runs to help the Falcons keep their hopes of a .500 season alive.

"It's been a very tough year for us and we've had to face a lot of adversity, so it's nice to finally get a win under our belts and on homecoming," Severna Park coach J.P. Hines said.

An interception by Alex Ramsay set up Bohn's 2-yard score just before the half to give the Falcons a 14-6 lead. Severna Park then took the second-half kickoff and needed just three plays to make it 21-6, with the final 37 yards of the 72-yard drive coming on Zorn's touchdown run.

After enjoying some success early, the Gophers went away from the running game and the Severna Park secondary took advantage.

Gadow did throw for 327 yards and three touchdowns, but the Falcons picked him off four times. Chris Bonomi, Avery Littlejohn and Stanton Johnson all intercepted passes in the second half.

"The defense played tremendous. That was a concern of mine, but the kids played well," Hines said.

Cory Owens, Matt Watson and Detrick Parker all scored touchdowns for Glen Burnie
