After slow start, 'Cats get it going ARUNDEL

Published 10/31/09

After 12 minutes of play, spectators at the Arundel-Meade game were teased into thinking it was going to be a low-scoring affair. Things changed quickly in the second quarter.

Billy Cosh threw for 319 yards and six touchdowns to four different receivers as visiting and top-ranked Arundel scored four times in the second quarter en route to a 62-21 victory over Meade.

Joe Blackwell rushed for 118 yards and a score for the Wildcats, with 112 of those yards coming in the first half as the Wildcats uncharacteristically struggled early. Arundel's first three drives ended with the ball going over on downs once and a pair of interceptions. The Mustangs' Martell Pegues and Keron Costen made the rare thefts on Cosh.

"It was rough. They had a good scheme doubling RJ (Harris). I tried to force things that were not there," Cosh said. "I should have made smarter decisions, but we responded quickly.''

Blackwell got Arundel on the board early in the second quarter after the Wildcats started with good field position at Meade's 41. Three plays later, Blackwell found the end zone from 2 yards out.

"Our line and Joe did a great job early for us," Cosh said. "What

Bethey did really opened up the passing lanes for us later."

Meade responded immediately. On the next play from scrimmage, a tipped pass from Zach Hawk fell into the hands of Teldrick Morgan, who cut inside one defender and scrambled 80 yards to get the Mustangs within 7-6.

Then the Wildcats began to execute their offense the way they have in almost every other game this season. In the final 10 minutes of the first half, Arundel scored three times - all on passes. Cosh looked off a safety and found Harris (nine catches, 103 yards, three touchdowns) in the middle of the field. Harris got the last 12 yards of the 25-yard scoring play himself. On Arundel's next drive, Cosh found John White in the left corner of the end zone from 10 yards out. On the final drive of the half, Harris bounced off a defender and cut in for a 21-yard score. Although Hawk hit Jamar Sims with a 23-yard score two plays after a squib kick, Arundel had already done enough damage.

"As a team, we are not disciplined enough to stay with them for four quarters," Meade coach Lance Clelland said. "You cannot make any mistakes against them."

The second half saw Arundel extend its lead further when Cosh hit Jeffrey Taylor for a 17-yard score before Hawk responded with a 44-yard strike to recent addition Marcus Snipes. One play later, Cosh found White again from 29 yards out.

Bobby Partilla returned an interception for a score and Jonathan Haskett added another pick for the Wildcats in the fourth quarter.

White finished with 102 yards receiving on 10 catches for Arundel. T.J. Fondren led the Mustangs on the ground with 66 yards. Morgan had 135 yards receiving on five catches for Meade.

Well done to Meade for hanging in there for a quarter...that is progress. What's great about Arundel's program is that it gives AA County teams a "measuring stick" on what it will take to compete at the State level. That is something that has been lacking in AA for some time.
