A couple of weeks ago, our column carried a graph that showed national average home prices over the past 25 years. This graph generated a lot of interest with our readers. So, this week we have a graph that shows national home prices (adjusted for inflation) going all the way back to 1890. This graph illustrates a couple of interesting points.
First, when adjusted for inflation, the average price of a house in 2000 wasn't much different than it was in 1900. We found that surprising. Second, the graph clearly shows the effect of the Great Depression on house prices. Prices didn't really recover until the post war boom of the...
